And Everybody Had a Good Time

Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying: "I will sing to the Lord, For He has triumphed gloriously! Exodus 15:1

A day earlier they had thought all hope was lost. They were cornered against the edge of the sea, and the pursuing enemy army was pressing close to them. Some of them began to wonder why they had tried to find their Promised Land. Then the water parted. As only God can provide, a new and unseen path was set before them. From the other side of danger, they could see most clearly the saving hand of the majestic, engaged, and powerful God and Father. Looking back at the destruction of the threatening force, and forward to the anticipated promise, they were elevated in joy. They gave thanks. They praised. They embraced. They celebrated. They joined with one another in a special time of reflective joy. As they sang and danced there was emotionally charged excitement. It was a lasting moment to be held; to not be released. It was special, and everybody had a good time. It may be that we tend to see the characters of the Bible with only a solemn eye. We may be inclined think that they were either completely pious or radically evil. Frankly, we need to see them a lot like we see ourselves. See them with the simple fun of life. See them with the humor of ordinary living. See them with the joys of a day caught in celebration. They loved to eat. They loved to play. They loved life. They had a good time. Our lives will always be a mixture of events. Some of them will be solemn. There will always be the very serious things. Still, there will also be those moments of fun when we say, Everyone had a good time. -Russ
