Although Spain, France, and England all had colonies in the New World, the thirteen
colonies that eventually became the United States of America were part of the British
empire (England).
Most of the American colonies were owned by England and the king of England was their
ruler. He appointed governors to keep things in order and represent him to the
colonists. Each colony did have its own individual government, called a colonial
legislature, which made laws for that colony, but it was closely monitored by the
colonial governors.
The purpose of the American colonies was to increase England’s wealth and power. The
colonies provided England with valuable raw materials, such as timber and cash crops.
Americans bought English manufactured goods. England controlled this trade very
strictly to make sure they could make as much money as possible.
Sometimes, though, the colonies cost England money. Keeping the colonists safe from
attack required English soldiers and supplies. The French and Indian War, fought in
the Ohio River Valley was especially long and expensive. England had to tax the
colonies to make some of this money back.
After reading the information above, list three ways in which England controlled her
American colonies.
