saw her hit .408 with a .526 OBP and .634 slugging percentage. She
scored 24 runs, an improvement of fve, and cut down her strikeouts
from 15 to fve. She did walk 12 fewer times nine compared to 21
a refection of her role as the No. 3 batter in the Baronsorder.
After hitting .260 over her frst two seasons, she rapped 76 hits in 156

What can Brian Lohr and Hempfeld do for an encore?
In his frst season coaching at the scholastic level, the longtime Junior Olympics mentor and
consummate players coach guided Hempfeld to an unbeaten league season and the L-L
Section One title, the Black Knightsfrst section title since 1993 and their third overall.
Starting eight underclassmen, including two freshmen, the Knights dropped the frst two
games of the year then fashioned a 23-game winning streak, highlighted by the capture of the
L-L League championship, Hempfelds frst league title since 2003 and second overall. They
advanced to the semifnals of the District Three Class AAAA tournament before capping the

When the 2013 season began, Mike Vogel counted
several experienced returning players on his team. But
the Black Knights may not have won the L-L League
and District Three Class AAA titles without the quick
maturation of players like sophomores Ben Naumann
and Chris Booth. Despite its history of postseason
success, Hempfeld may not have been thought of as
a state champion contender this season. Vogels Black Knights, however,
advanced to the AAA state semifnals.

ATHLETE of the YEAR
Cocalico freshman Emily Staufer,
right, had a breakout outdoor
season after a highly successful
indoor season. Staufer won the
L-L League (41-9) and District
Three (40-7) titles in the shot
put, then placed second in the
PIAA Championships (42-11)
this Spring, earning PTFCA All-

came after she won the Pa. Track
and Field Coaches Association
Indoor State Championship title
with a heave of 43-6.
She set the school record
with a throw of 43-10.
GIRLS TRACK
ATHLETE of the YEAR
Ephrata senior Mary Witmer, a Liberty
University recruit, truly had a season
to remember. She claimed a gold
medal at the PIAA Championships,
winning the 300 intermediate hurdles
in 42.90. She broke the L-L League
and District Three meet records in
the same event, clocking 42.32 at
leagues and then 42.11 at districts.
Witmer won both hurdles events and
the triple jump, and also ran a leg
on the victorious 1,600 relay, as the
Mountaineers won the L-L League
title for the frst time in school history.
She holds fve individual school
records and a sixth as part of that
relay team.
Mary had a great work ethic and was
willing to do what it takes to reach
her goals,said Ephrata coach John
Keller. She was very competitive, as
losing was just not in her vocabulary.

Athletes of the Year 2012-13
Tyler Karpinski
BY DUSTIN LEED
Sports Writer
dleed@lnpnews.com
C
hoosing a way to describe Tyler Karpinski was
far too diffcult.
So, talented, hard-working and dedicated
were just a few Manheim Township football boss Mark
Evans chose.
I have so many words going through my head right
now (to describe Karpinski), Evans
acknowledged. He is just special.
Hes a special athlete and a special
student-athlete.
What Karpinski was able to achieve
in his senior season on the football feld,
basketball court and lacrosse feld was
also special.
On the gridiron, the Manheim Town-
ship grad and Temple recruit was the
Lancaster-Lebanon League coaches
pick for Wide Receiver of the Year and
Defensive Back of the Year in Section
One. Karpinski was an L-L League Sec-
tion One First-Team All-Star selection
at wide receiver and defensive back,
a Second-Team selection as a kick
returner and was also named to the
Pennsylvania Football News All-Star
First Team as a kick returner.
Karpinski was also named to the Big
33 Pennsylvania roster and was among
the 51 2012 Pennsylvania Mini Maxwell
Award winners.
(Players were nominated by their
coaches throughout the 2012 season
and were evaluated based on a criteria
that includes academics, football per-
formance and community service).
On the court, Karpinski was the starting point
guard for the Blue Streaks. And on the lacrosse
feld, the attack garnered All-L-L League First-
Team honors while leading the Streaks to another
District Three championship. For the season, he
compiled 64 goals, 34 assists and 98 points.
To wrap up his successful senior season, Kar-
pinski was named Lancaster Newspapers Male
Athlete of the Year.
Others considered were Solancos Thomas
Haines (wrestling, soccer), Manheim Centrals
Cole Profftt (football, track and feld), Warwicks
Tom Devenney (football, wrestling) and McCas-
keys Diante Cherry (football, basketball, track
and feld) and Aaron Swinton (football, basket-
ball).
I wasnt expecting this, Karpinski said with a
chuckle last week. Im just honored. There are a
lot of good athletes in the area.
Im just happy and surprised, but its awe-
some.
Tyler is a wonderful kid, Township boys
lacrosse coach Kyle Wimer said. Hes a great
athlete. Every time you ask him to do something,
to improve and work on it, he does it and you can
see how his game escalates just by being a players
coach and being a great teammate.
Karpinski (5-foot-10, 165 pounds) led the L-L in re-
ceiving with 74 catches for 1,151 yards and eight touch-
downs. As a kick and punt returner, Karpinski returned
12 kicks for 434 yards and 14 punts for 359 yards. He
averaged 36.2 and 25.6 yards per return, respectively.
In the words of Evans, any time Karpinski was on the
feld he was a threat and a force every time he touched
the football.
What he lacked in speed, in
pure speed and size, he made
up in the ability to get open,
said Evans, talking about Kar-
pinskis receiving talents.
I think what separated
him on the football feld,
not only just his instincts,
but he had the wiggle. He
had the shake and bake
you just cant coach.
Juggling three sports is
a rarity among many high
school athletes, who often
choose to specialize in
one sport and play it year
round. But Karpinski, who
played basketball, football and
lacrosse growing up, made the
decision to stick with all three
early.
At the beginning of my
freshman year, everyone told
me I cant play three sports, he said. Everyone has al-
ways been telling me that. I just stayed with it and loved
all three of them.
Its a little bit hectic, but Id rather play all three
(sports) instead of one. I would have gotten tired of
one.
Both Evans and Wimer credit Karpinski for sticking
with all three.
That makes him special
... , Evans said. (With a busy
schedule) he did what he could
when he could. It is tough to
serve three masters. He was
always on the go.
Tylers ability to play mul-
tiple sports is refected in all of
his sports, Wimer added. It
helps him in different aspects
of his game and his best at-
tribute is just being a natural
athlete.
In addition to the evident
natural athletic ability, intangibles stand out to his
coaches.
You like to see kids like him get this type of recogni-
tion because he couldnt care less about it, Evans said.
He just wants his teams to do well. Hes not about the
awards or accolades.
Hes a solid student and
always looking to help oth-
ers, Wimer added. He truly
understands the student as-
pect part of being an athlete.
Football is the sport that
Karpinski will focus on at the
next level. Hes a preferred
walk-on at Temple and one
of just a few wide receiver
recruits for the Owls.
To cap his scholastic foot-
ball career, Karpinski played
for Pennsylvania in the
Super Bowl of high school
football, the Big 33 game.
Its a great opportunity
to play with some of the best
players in Pa., said Kar-
pinski, who started at wide
receiver. Im glad I can close
out my high school career in
a big game.
Hes one of the best
kids Ive had the pleasure
of coaching over the last 20
years, Evans said. He ranks
up there with some of the
best.
Karpinski touted by coach
as special student and athlete
I think what separated
him on the football feld,
not only just his instincts,
but he had the wiggle. He
had the shake and bake you
just cant coach.

ALL-STAR SPORTS SPRING SEASON
JUNE 17, 2013 9
BY PETE KAUFFMAN
Sports Writer
pkauffman@lnpnews.com
E
mily Cameron is the undisputed Queen of
Chlorine.
Her coronation or should that be corona-
tions? came in the form of seven PIAA, District
Three and L-L League meet crowns earned during a
brilliant four-year swimming career for Warwick.
It began with the Purple Peanut era as a novice
at Lititz Springs, where she was known for wearing a
purple wet suit instead of a normal bathing suit.
It extended through her Golden Age, an unmatched
slate of success in the L-L League, where she set and
still holds records in seven of the eight individual
events; marks that can only be established in L-L dual
meets or at the league championships.
It culminated in her Blue Period, when she wore an
Aqua Blue suit against a feld of black-clad opponents in
her fnal individual event at states. That swim was also
marked by her competing without goggles and win-
ning her seventh and fnal state championship.
She certainly will become the touchstone for excel-
lence in L-L swimming. She certainly will be remem-
bered as one of the best that Pennsylvania has ever
seen, Mark Daum, Warwicks swimming coach, said of
Cameron. She is arguably the fnest female swimmer
ever to come out of Lancaster County.
Cameron, who owns three PIAA Class AAA swim-
ming records, is arguably one of the fnest all-around
athletes in the Lancaster-Lebanon League this year. And
as such, she was named as the Lancaster Newspapers
Female Athlete of the Year.
Others under consider-
ation were Ephratas Mary
Witmer (track), Hempfelds
Kelsey Nolan (feld hockey,
track), Manheim Centrals
Aerika High (bowling, soft-
ball), Manheim Townships
Molly Hendrick (basketball,
lacrosse) and Penn Manors
Greta Lindsley (cross-coun-
try, track).
Im speechless, Cam-
eron said when informed of
her award. Its been quite a
ride.
High school either makes
you or breaks you (in swim-
ming), and it made me who
I am.
While Emily will cer-
tainly be remembered for
her individual accomplishments
at Warwick, moreover, she will
equally be remembered for being
a great teammate and for offering
to be positioned wherever the team
needed her to win a meet, added
Daum.
Cameron is one of those swim-
mers who excelled at virtually
every stroke.
She is a three-time state champ
in the 200-yard IM, setting the
PIAA record of 1:59.00 in 2010, low-
ering it to 1:57.74 in 2011 and also
winning it in 2:00.62 as a senior.
Cameron also set state records
of 22.75 in the 50 freestyle and
1:00.54 in the 100 breaststroke
while claiming titles in 2012.
She won the breaststroke crown three times as well,
going 1:02.31 in 2010 and 1:02.15 in 2013, and took the
bronze in the 100 free in 49.45 as a sophomore, when the
top three fnishers in that event all broke the previous
state standard.
Cameron was named the Class AAA Swimmer of
the Meet at the PIAA Championships as a freshman, an
award presented by the state coaches association and
based on prestige points for meeting
certain times in events.
She said her freshman season ac-
complishments were among her most
memorable.
Winning those frst two gold med-
als was a really big achieve-
ment for me, Cameron said.
Thats when it all started.
Obviously, I really fell in
love with the water before
then, but (winning those
titles), thats what got things
going for me.
She is a four-time Most
Valuable Swimmer in the L-L
League and is a 14-time high
school All-America selection.
This season, she received
the Brooks-Fackler-Hower Sportsmanship
Award presented by District Three.
Cameron was also a cross-country runner,
and although that career was secondary to
swimming, she certainly found success there as
well. She helped Warwick win the L-L League
and District Three Class AAA girls meet team
titles, and fnish ffth in the PIAA Champion-
ships, as a freshman.
Individually, Cameron was second in leagues, ninth in
districts and 43rd in states that year.
After sitting out two seasons, she resumed her run-
ning career as a senior, placing 25th in the L-L League
Meet as the Warriors took ffth.
Legends are made after your body of work is fn-
ished, and thats quite a body of work, Daum said at the
state swim meet.
That body of work should expand
exponentially when she enrolls at the
University of Georgia in the fall. The
Bulldogs are coming off an NCAA
Division I championship season, after
fnishing as runners-up in 2011 and
2012.
Im just a little fsh in a big sea,
so that will be a change, she said
of looking forward to competing at
Georgia.
And getting thrown into a pool
that has national champions. Im just
a state champion.
Competitiveness in anything is
in Emilys DNA and is what I think
drives her, Daum said. Georgias
Jack Bauerle is a phenomenal coach
who has a proven track record for
developing and getting the best from his swimmers.
Jack creates an environment of excellence that I think
Emily will thrive in.
Cameron said growing up (in swimming) under the
eight-year tutelage of Lancaster Aquatic Club coach
Casey Coble was an invaluable experience. And that
making Junior Nationals and some of the other high-
profle meets with the LAC are among her favorite and
cherished accomplishments.

be remembered for her indi-

equally be remembered for
being a great teammate and
for offering to be positioned
