Since 1967, Conte Farms has been giv-
ing residents of Tabernacle, to people
from all over the tri-state area, the op-
portunity to pick their own fruits and
vegetables. The Contes have found that
people appreciate knowing where their
food comes from and relish the opportu-
nity to pick it themselves.
Its a big draw for people to come and
pick their own fresh fruits and vegeta-
bles, Larry Conte, who runs the farm
along with his brother Joe, said. And
the kids always have a good time.
Conte has been working on the farm
his entire life. Originally owned by his
parents, the 500-acre farm located on
Flyat Road grows a wide variety of
fruits and vegetables. Their facility acts
as both a retail and pick-your-own oper-
ation.
We have a little bit of everything for
sale, all grown right here, sweet corn,
lettuce, tomatoes, Conte said.
The farm has transitioned from a
place where people bought food in bulk
to can and freeze to the mainly pick-
your-own operation they are now.
Throughout the spring and summer,
people will come looking to pick fresh
strawberries, blueberries and peaches.
Come fall, apples and pumpkins will be

from Shamong, flock to Conte for the opportunity
to pick their own seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Students create
innovative distracted
driving campaign
For the second time in three
years, Lenape Regional High
School District students created
an ambitious and innovative dis-
tracted driving campaign and
drove home as champions from
the third Annual "U Got Brains
Champion Schools Program."
The district won a driving sim-
ulator and a $10,000 grant, which
the district will use to help fund
post graduation events at each of
the four Lenape District schools
giving students a safe place to cel-
ebrate.
According to John Donaldson,
LRHSD director of Television
Services, the nine Lenape Dis-
trict students who spearheaded
the Heads Up, Eyes Forward!
campaign, were elated and a bit
exhausted driving home on Fri-
day evening, June 7.
It was the culmination of an
intense campaign of long days,
evenings and weekends that
began last summer and ended
with a "sprint" over the past five
months beginning in January.
Winning the competition is
very exciting because it validates
all of the hard work that our stu-
dents performed on the Heads
Up, Eyes Forward! campaign
throughout the school year, said
Donaldson.
"It was a great opportunity to
grow as an individual, learning

what families are looking for,
Conte said.
An unusually cold and wet
spring forced Conte to open later
this year than usual. At one point
in April, they had removed the
heaters from their storage area
only to put them back in a few
days later.
The weather was tough on us
this spring, Conte said. With it
being so much cooler, the crops
people come to pick took a bit
longer to ripen.
Once the farm did open on
June 1, there were crowds of peo-
ple ready to welcome the estab-
lishment back as well as get a
taste of summer.
People loaded up on the trailer
for a ride out into the fields.
A lot of our business is people
who have been coming to this
farm for years and years, Conte
said.
They bring their families or
tell their friends. Word of mouth
is the biggest source of our busi-
ness.
And if you are looking to stray
from the healthy fruit and veggies
options, Conte is more than
happy to welcome you into the
bakery where custard and ar-
guably the best apple cider dough-
nuts are available.
We pride ourselves on being a
family run business, and with
that we want to cater to the fami-
lies coming to our farm, Conte
said.
The farm is open daily from 8
a.m. through 6 p.m. Call (609) 268

Superintendent Dolores Szymanski
to exit position at end of month
By NICK COHEN
The Shamong Sun
Be nice and listen to people
That is the secret to life, ac-
cording to Shamong School Dis-
trict interim superintendent Do-
lores Szymanski, who is exiting
the position at the end of this
month.
When you hear about the rela-
tionships shes built and the work
shes accomplished these last two
years, its tough to argue with
her.
Szymanski arrived in Sha-
mong in August 2011 after retir-
ing as superintendent of the
Burlington County Institute of
Technology.
She served as an administrator
at BCIT from 1983 to 2011. To re-
ceive her pension from BCIT, Szy-
manski can only work on an in-
terim basis for up to two years.
She came to us with such an
amazing career already and a
network that has benefitted us
enormously, school board presi-
dent Melissa Ciliberti said.
Principal at Indian Mills Me-
morial School Timothy Carroll
agreed with Ciliberti.
She had such a wealth of ex-
perience that I really enjoyed get-
ting to learn a lot from, Carroll
said.
She had a genuine interest in
moving the district forward.
Szymanski was confident in
her decision to work in Shamong
following her meeting with the
board.
After working with it for two
years, her fondness for the board
and her staff only blossomed.
I was blessed on so many
fronts. I was blessed to work with
a board that is so dedicated and
so passionate about enriching
childrens lives. A board that was
dedicated to ensuring that the
students would be successful and
that they would have fun, Szy-
manski said.
I was blessed to have Jackie
Johnson as an assistant who was
such a valuable asset. I cannot
say enough about the relation-
ships and the friendships that
have developed.
Among Szymanskis accom-
plishments was the districts in-
stitution of an all-day kinder-
garten program as well as an
autism program for children in
pre-kindergarten.
Szymanski is quick to give the
credit to the board and her staff.
Once I knew the quality of
the staff and the leadership that
was in place, I knew anything
was possible, Szymanski said. I
knew we could accomplish what-

f the only exposure you had to
New Jersey was what others said
or wrote about it, youd think it
was the worst place on the planet.
Scan the Internet just this week, and
youd find these stories:
Our governor called the authors of
a League of Municipalities report on
tax reform corrupt and labeled the
groups leader as a whiner.
A Little League coach in Newark
plead guilty in court to assaulting an
umpire because he wouldnt call a
game due to darkness.
A new report says that the Garden
State is the most expensive state to get
your car repaired.
A great white shark circled a boat
off the coast (not that this has much to
do with Jersey).
The greater public perception of
New Jersey is that it is a crowded, ex-
pensive state full of loud, obnoxious
people (thanks Real Housewives and
Jersey Shore) who think they are
better than everyone else (well, arent
we?). Our governor fits that mold per-
fectly, even as he is being mentioned as
a potential candidate for president of
the United States when the next elec-
tion comes around.
Heck, of the three professional
sports teams that are located in the
state, only one (the Devils) are
proud enough to label themselves
from New Jersey. The other two (the
Giants and Jets) act like theyre from
New York.
So why does anyone still live here?
Why are we doing this to ourselves?
Because, for those of us who live
here, who grew up here and are rais-
ing families here, we know the good-
ness that is here in New Jersey, even if
we recognize the bad. We love our
beaches, our mountains and our easy
access to major cities. We are proud of
our small, quaint towns, our history
and our top-notch schools, even if we
pay exorbitant prices to be here.
We are New Jersey, and well always
be New Jersey.
And we dont care what you think.
What are we still doing here?
With all the negativity about the state, why does anyone live in N.J.?
Your thoughts
Are you proud to be a New Jerseyan?
Let us know why you choose to call the
Garden State your home...and also what
youd like to see improve.
Study shows county as having lowest tax burden in region
With the county budget $43.6 million less
than it was in 2008 and the combined coun-
ty property tax levy down $25.2 million
since 2009, the Pew Charitable Trust credit-
ed Burlington County with having the low-
est comparable, residential tax burden in
the Philadelphia region in a study last year.
Recently, the Burlington County Free-
holders introduced a budget plan aimed at
earning that distinction again by reducing
the total taxes needed to run all county gov-
ernment programs by $7.7 million while
cutting the general operating budget by
more than $15 million.
The move is expected to continue a posi-
tive trend that has seen the county share of
an average residents total tax bill steadily
drop from 19 percent in 2007 to 15.8 percent
last year.
With the fallout from the recession still
impacting so many middle-class homeown-
ers and job seekers, our goal was to again
do more with less. We set out to continue
providing property tax relief, while protect-
ing programs and services our residents
value, said Freeholder Director Joe Don-
nelly, who first took office in 2008.
Facing county tax ratables (property val-
ues) that plummeted another $1.9 billion,
resulting in a general revenue loss of $7.6
million, the freeholders analyzed the three
budgets of county government that each
operate off a separate and distinct dedicat-
ed tax general operations, the library sys-
tem, and the open space and historic
preservation programs in an effort ease
the overall burden on property taxpayers.
We came to the conclusion that given
the $48 million already banked in our land
preservation fund, the 4-cent open space tax
could be safely reduced to 1.5 cents without
any negative impact on our efforts to save
land, maintain our parks, or continue oper-
ation of our popular municipal recreation
grant program, Donnelly said.
Donnelly reported that the overall coun-
ty property tax rate will remain un-
changed. That will be accomplished via a
decrease in the dedicated Open Space tax of
2.5 cents that will offset a corresponding in-
crease in the tax rate for the regular operat-
ing budget. The Burlington County library
system tax rate will remain flat for this
year.
Donnelly said that he was confident that
the dedicated open space fund would not
only cover existing programs, but also was
healthy enough to fund three major initia-
tives: the planned Underground Railroad
Museum at Historic Smithville Park; the
conversion of Mount Holly Library into the
countys first general history museum; and
the recent partnership with the state, West-
ampton Township and other organizations
to keep Rancocas Nature Center in opera-
tion.
Regardless, we remain committed to
employing every fiscally responsible tool
available to protect our property taxpayers
and keep more of their own money where
it belongs in their own pockets, Donnelly
said.

Szymanski will continue work as a
professor at Wilmington University
ever we wanted.
Professionalism and experi-
ence were not the only things
that Szymanski brought to the
district.
She changed the culture here,
she became a mentor to the ad-
ministration team, Ciliberti
said.
She got to know parents, she
was very easy to talk to and very
approachable. Everyone loved
her.
Indian Mills Elementary prin-
cipal Nicole Moore echoed Cilib-
ertis sentiment.
When Dolores got here it was
honestly a breath of fresh air,
Moore said.
She brought a touch of
warmth to the district and I will
miss her greatly.
Both Moore and Carroll spoke
to Szymanskis open door policy
and her availability.
I could always get in touch
with her, 24/7, Carroll said. If
this was a part-time job for her,
youd never know it.
As far as what is next, dont ex-
pect to find Szymanski lounging
somewhere tropical anytime
soon.
She will continue to be a train-
er for the McRELs Principal
Evaluation System and an ad-
junct professor in the doctoral
program at Wilmington Universi-
ty.
And she is more than ready to
be an interim superintendent
somewhere else.
Szymanski knows that the ex-
periences she had in Shamong
will follow her into future endeav-
ors.
We had a wonderful time,
Szymanski said. I hope that they
learned as much from the experi-
ence as I learned from them.
As previously reported by The
Sun, Christine Vespe was an-
nounced as the new superintend-
ent on May 21 and will start in
Shamong on July 1.

A Just Drive! T-shirt sale in

Colleges partner in
admission program
Burlington County College and
The Richard Stockton College of
New Jersey recently signed a
Guaranteed Admission Program
agreement for their latest green
degrees.
Last fall, both colleges
launched degree programs. The
agreement, signed at Stocktons
Board of Trustees meeting in Feb-
ruary, will allow BCC students
studying sustainability to seam-
lessly transfer into Stocktons pro-
gram after earning their associ-
ates degree.
Students who meet the neces-
sary requirements for the degree
program will enter into Stockton
College with junior status and be
able to graduate with a bachelors
degree within two years.
BCC is the first two-year college
in the tri-county area to offer com-
prehensive green associates de-
gree programs. With support from
a NASA grant, BCC created the
Center for Sustainability and Al-
ternative Energy and is now offer-
ing four green degree programs:
Associate of Science in Sustain-
ability Policy & Management, As-
sociate of Applied Science in En-
ergy Management, Associate of
Applied Science in
Alternative Energy Technolo-
gies, and Associate of Science in
Sustainable Energy Studies. The
Associate of Science degrees are
specifically designed to transfer
into four-year institutions.
To qualify for acceptance, BCC
students must earn a cumulative
grade point average of 3.0 and de-
clare their intention to enroll in
the GAP program before complet-
ing 30 credits at BCC.
