Preface
This document gives an overview about transformers that can be used with Infineon 3.3V devices which contain an E1/T1/J1 Line Interface Unit like the QuadFALC, the FALC56 and the QuadLIU. Basic performance tests were done with transformers provided by major transformer vendors such as Halo, PULSE and APC. Organization of this Document This is divided into 4 chapters as follows: Chapter 1 Overview Gives a general description of the products for which this application note is intended; Chapter 2 Transformer Requirements Lists transformer parameters which have to be met to achieve suitable performance; Chapter 3 Line Interface Configurations Describes Line Interface setups that support different line types without changing the circuitry; Chapter 4 Available transformers Several transformer vendors already provide transformer types optimized for the Infineon devices. Links to available information are listed in Chapter 4;

Overview
To connect the Infineon framer and line interface components to the analog line a transformer is required. In various specifications for the E1, T1 and J1 standards special requirements are described. This document contains information about the transformer parameters needed to pass telecom acceptance tests. About the involved Infineon devices The QuadFALC PEB 22554 framer and line interface component is designed to fulfill all interfacing requirements between four analog E1/T1/J1 lines and a digital PCM system highway, such as H.100/H.110 or H-MVIP bus for world market telecommunication systems. Due to its multitude of implemented functions, it fits to a wide range of networking applications and fulfills applicable international standards. An integrated signaling controller including Signaling System #7 support reduces software overhead. The FALC56 framer and line interface component is designed to fulfill all required interfacing between a single E1/T1/J1 lines and a digital PCM system highway, H.100/ H.110 or H-MVIP bus for world market telecommunication systems. Its functionality is similar to the QuadFALC but optimized for one port only. In addition to the QuadFALC features the FALC56 integrates three signaling controllers to support V5.1/V5.2 protocols. The QuadLIU Quad Line Interface Unit is a device to connect four E1/T1/J1 framer devices to four analog or digital lines. The line interface is selectable for long-haul or short-haul applications and fulfills the relevant standards for E1, T1, and J1 systems. All devices are equipped with a flexible microprocessor interface, which enables connection to any control processor environment. A standard boundary scan interface is provided to support board level testing. Flat pack or BGA device packaging, minimum number of external components and low power consumption lead to reduced overall system costs. Crystal-less jitter attenuation with only one master clock source reduces the number of required external components.

Transformer Requirements
This chapter lists the requirements for T1 / J1 / E1 transformers used in combination with Infineon line interfaces. Table 1 lists the most important parameters. Several transformer vendors have been contacted and asked to list their parts especially suited for Infineon devices. Mainly they are pin compatible which ensures an easy move from one vendor to the other. Examples are listed in Chapter 4. Basic performance tests like BER or pulse shape tests were done with most of them in the Infineon lab and didnt show any unexpected results. There are several line interface configurations possible depending on the requirements that have to be fulfilled. To get the best test results the configuration described in Chapter 3.1 should be used. Chapter 3.2 and Chapter 3.3 show configurations that support several line impedances. Some compromis is needed to acommodate T1, J1 and E1 with one set of external circuitry. While not optimized, these configurations still fulfill the pulse, shape and amplitude requirements for T1, J1 and E1.

Combined configuration
It is also possible to support the T1, J1 and E1 (120 as well as 75) line impedances with one hardware configuration without any changes. To match the E1 75 coax cable requirements with the T1 configuration a different transformer is required. In the receive direction the transformer ratio is 1:0.79 (chip side : line side) and in transmit direction 1:2 (chip side : line side) it is. A transformer as used in Figure 1 with additional center taps on the line side permits the support of different line impedances. Here it is possible to connect either twisted pair (100, 110 or 120 line impedance) or coax cable (75 line impedance) as shown in Figure 2. Vendors provide special transformers with center taps for this application. At any time either twisted pair or coax connections are used.

An alternative to the solution using transformers with center taps is shown in Figure 3. The basic transformer can be used and a switchable Rx matching resistor handles the correct line termination. Depending on the connected line (twisted pair or coax cable) either a 300 resistor has to be switched in parallel to the 100 termination resistor or not. For an optimized transmit pulse shape in E1 the XPM registers have to be programmed differently compared to the optimized values in the data sheet to adjust the pulse amplitude in each pulse quarter.
