BAT SURVEYING Tutor: Stuart Newson An evening for anyone who wishes to find out more about the Norfolk Bat Survey www.batsurvey.org and the use of passive bat detectors. These devices can be borrowed for short periods to record bat activity which is later analysed by experienced workers. An introductory session will be followed by a walk in The Nunnery grounds, returning to analyse any calls recorded. INTRODUCING FRESHWATER ORGANISMS Tutor: Anne Harrap For those who want a broad introduction to collecting and identifying freshwater organisms, including aquatic insects, mollusc and crustaceans. Stereo microscopes and a wide variety of literature will be available. Material will be collected on site and examined in the study centre. HOVERFLIES Tutor: Tony Irwin The workshop will provide an introduction to finding, catching and identifying hoverflies. Field observation and demonstrations of collecting techniques will be followed by a session in the laboratory. All equipment will be provided, but bring your own if you prefer! INTRODUCTION TO STUDYING SMALL MAMMALS Tutors: Francis Farrow & Nick Owens As well as providing an introduction to the use of Longworth traps for live-trapping small mammals, this workshop will include the identification of mammals from owl pellets and other aspects of mammal recording. The NNNS now owns a number of Longworth traps which can be borrowed in return for records. GRASSHOPPERS AND CRICKETS Tutor: Nick Owens They provide a soundtrack to the late summer, but how much do you know about these fascinating insects? There are 27 native species of grasshoppers and crickets (Orthoptera) in Britain and they can provide interesting clues to scientific questions on climate change and evolution. This workshop focuses on the identification and ecology of the group, with both indoor and outdoor sessions. BUGS AND BEETLES Tutors: Tristan Bantock & Rob Coleman The bugs (Hemiptera) and beetles (Coleoptera) form two of the most diverse groups of insects. This workshop focuses on how to find some common species of beetle and bug using a variety of field techniques. We will also provide a starting point for people who would like to advance their skills in the identification of these fascinating groups during an indoor session. RIVER INVERTEBRATES Tutor: Dan Hoare An opportunity to learn the basics of collecting and identifying invertebrates from rivers. Suitable for those with a general interest or anyone wanting to start survey work. Material will be collected from the River Glaven and brought back to the study centre for examination. In collaboration with the Norfolk Rivers Trust. GRASSLAND FUNGI Tutor: Tony Leech Participants will be introduced to the major groups of grassland fungi and shown how to record information as well as to identify specimens. This is particularly suitable for anyone wishing to contribute to the grassland recording initiative promoted by NBIS but no experience is assumed and the workshop is open to all. If the weather is kind (wet!), the lawns and fields around Holt Hall should provide interesting material. LICHENS ON TREES Tutor: Peter Lambley Intended for the beginner, this workshop will cover collecting and the basics of identifying these attractive, but little-studied, organisms. Material collected on the Reserve will be examined in the study centre under stereo microscopes.
