Every good painter paints what he is. Jackson Pollock The only time I feel alive is when I am painting. Vincent Van Gogh I want people to know what it is they're looking at. But at the same time, the closer they get to the painting; it's like going back into childhood. And it's like an abstract piece [] it becomes the landscape of the brush marks. Jenny Saville THE BRIEF For this assignment we would like you to produce a range of paintings and prints that experiment with different ways to represent the human body and how we react to, control or work with natural and built environments. As well as having the opportunity to develop your skills in a series of workshops leading to final pieces, you will also co-curate and exhibit work in a local gallery and also produce work for a collaborative installation on the college campus. We want the primary focus of this project to be on how you are painting and printing. We want you to experiment with the scale, media and application used in your prints and paintings. Above all, we want you to be expressive! We also want you to think about how the body has been represented by artists throughout the ages? Why is it that when we walk around the National Gallery we see so many more images of female nudes than men for example? Also think about why we consider some bodies to be more beautiful than others? Why do we tend to see more images of younger bodies than older bodies? Why is the media seemingly obsessed with images of the body? Think about how painted images of the body can communicate ideas about the mind or emotions. Can an image of a distorted body painted in an expressive way say something about a tormented soul for example? Is the body a cage or a vehicle of expression?

Task 1: VISUAL RESEARCH (Drawing and photography)

Produce a series of observational drawings, photographs and creative reactions on your group visits to locations in London and any other appropriate primary source.

You are expected to analyse, evaluate and explore the techniques demonstrated and develop your own ideas using the imagery you have been developing from task two. It is vital that you keep a techniques file with examples and handouts as well as developing your own sketchbook ideas and evaluating your work. You will be expected to experiment with the following media and materials: Inks, watercolour, gouache, oil, wax, acrylic, mixed media, household paint, card, wood, canvas, cloth, papers, found materials. Task 3: RESEARCH Sketchbook Research: Research the work of painters and printmakers start with ones from the list in this brief. Visit London galleries and museums to look at actual work. Look at both historical and contemporary developments in art. Take photographs, make drawings, collect postcards of images of artwork, which you should analyse in your sketchbook in regard to their techniques, use of materials and subject matter. The chosen images should relate to your own thoughts and ideas. At every stage you should analyse and interpret your research in order to generate your own ideas and produce sophisticated and individual work.

Formal Research: Alongside your sketchbook research, you will be required to write an essay comparing and contrasting artists and movements. You will need to

comment on the cultural and historical context in which the works were created and analyse the ideas communicated. We recommend that your essay be between 750 and 1000 words and be typed. Record the sources from which you gained your information in a bibliography at the end of your essay. Put quotes in quotation marks and number according to your bibliography list.
Unit 3: P1 P2 P3 M1 D1 Unit 81: P1 M1 D1 Unit 5: P1 P2 P3 M2 Unit 12: P1 M1 D1

Task 4: COMPILE A TECHNIQUES FOLDER You will be introduced to a wide range of painting and printmaking techniques in a series of workshops. You are expected to make notes, explore the techniques demonstrated and develop your own ideas using the imagery you have been developing from task one. Task 7: DEVELOPMENT OF FINAL WORK After initial experimentation of the techniques, develop two ideas to be taken forward as the final work. Select one of these ideas to develop into a final piece. Consider the suitability of your chosen materials and techniques. How well do they communicate your ideas? Then make your final work and present it in a professional and creative way.

We recommend this is of about 200 words and be typed in 12 point and spell checked. Within your evaluation you should discuss the following: The starting point and ideas Artists you looked at and if their work influenced your own The materials and techniques you experimented with How successful you think your work is How could this work be extended to make it even more successful
