About You

Opening Position Statement

As a trainee ICT teacher, I have years of experience in IT to compliment my new found career in teaching. My experience working in software development, user acceptance testing and data security have enabled me to gain experience with Java, C++, Cisco based products, as well as being awarded my CCNA (Certified Cisco Network Associate). Over the last 3 years I have learnt a vast range of Multimedia software from my undergraduate, where I was awarded a 1 st, such as Adobes suite and design skills in HCI (Human Computer Interaction). As well as my experience working in IT globally, I trained to be an ESL teacher in 2007. After completing my TEFL certification, I taught Maths & ICT for an American international school where I participated in curriculum development for the ministry of education & lesson planning. After having managed non English speaking students for 2 years, some of whom had behavioural or learning problems, my classroom management techniques became extremely good, hopefully this is something that will be of use in my teacher training and a skill I can continue to develop. Whilst teaching ICT & Maths in Asia, I also lectured at Thailands number one university and also worked as a technical trainer for various multinational organisations. Having taught and worked in diverse communities with people from all types of backgrounds, my PGCE and NQT year in London are another step in the right direction that will help me reach my end goal, which is to be a qualified teacher that can bring IT back to life in education. IT skills in the workplace differ to the kind of skills students learn when studying ICT and Computer Science. Although in 2014, the national curriculum may change to focus more on Computer Science such as programming, games and software development and so on, the immediate skills that are taught in schools today such as databases, spreadsheets and basic theories of IT are not familiar to myself, and these skills need to be refreshed throughout my teacher training. Whilst completing my teacher training I would like to use my existing knowledge in IT and develop skills that are commonly associated in education. When opportunities arise in my teacher training and in the future, I would like to be able to take every opportunity to teach students to think outside of the box, to try another programme in IT that may not be familiar with and break down areas of IT that may seem challenging. Being able to work and understand different people, whether theyre from another country, have learning difficulties or lack confidence is an area in which I can help my students over the course of the next year. Enthusing students is key to success in education and with prior experience with students who may of been less fortunate, my experience will hopefully aid students in these areas and maybe help them achieve grades cross curricula by motivating them and introducing them to a different way of learning. Becoming familiar with curriculums that are commonly used in the UK such as AQA, Edexcel and OCR is a must. Developing and evidencing my skills audit should aid me in teaching at a range of schools in the future and help me to deliver solid lessons across the board. 1

After much research about completing a PGCE and gaining QTS for secondary education, and after meeting with teachers from various subjects, I see that completing my PGCE will be extremely challenging yet enjoyable. Over the course of my programme, I expect my attitude and outlooks to change and by the end have a completely different understanding of how to deliver a good education and reflect on teaching methodologies that do and dont work.

This form is divided into two sections. The first section asks you to identify any prior experiences you have had in working within school contexts or teaching in general. If you have included this information in your Subject Knowledge Audit already, you do NOT need to complete this section. The second section, which is to be carried out before your School Based Training 1 (SBT 1), is a SWOT analysis summarising your own strengths, areas to develop, concerns and expectations at this point in your training. Part 1 Self-Audit of School & Teaching Experiences Previous Experiences in School Contexts Mathematics & ICT teacher International primary school using Singaporean curriculum 2 years experience English and Social lecturer 1st year undergraduate students Previous Experiences in Teaching Technical trainer various companies training staff on basic networking products and terminology in English Internal trainer Cable and Wireless delivering training on new systems, training for new data engineers Part 2 Reflections on Induction Part of being a successful teacher is the ability to reflect upon your own practice and your emerging development needs. This analysis will provide a useful starting point for discussions with your Subject Mentor at your school induction.
