The Green Weekly

Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club Inc
1. Welcome
The weekend gone saw the return of a typical Tasmanian winter; bleak, wet and cold. Amazingly the majority of games went ahead except for the U7 white, where the opposition could not summon up the will to form a team. Congratulations must go to Graham and his band of U12 players who, after coming close a number of times in recent matches, fought out their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Princess St. Another special mention is our U10 Green team who beat quality opposition in Division 1 in the form of the Tilford Zebras.

This week Played 10 Won 6 Lost 2 Draw 2 For 31 Against 14 This season Played 69 Won 40 (58%) Lost 23 Draw 5 For 270 Against 162
Above is only for Juniors

As most of you would know by now, each child should have received their free soccer ball which this year came as part of the registration fee. We would strongly recommend you put your childs name on the ball, and do not bring the ball to training. With all the balls looking the same, this will avoid coaches spending time dealing with potential conflict over who has whose ball. With the return of the rains and a large number of games to be held at home in the next few weeks (6 games then 8 games), we will need to begin monitoring the state of the ground in relation to training. Should we cancel a training session to alleviate impact for match days, we will let you know asap via e-mail and our Facebook page. The rest of the seasons rosters can be seen for your childs team in the team section. Note these can change and we will let you know each newsletter. Special thanks to those who volunteered for canteen on the weekend. We have a few weeks with up to 8 home games soon so we really need your help. Please have a look at the canteen section and if you have a home game let Alison know you will help out. Best of luck for the coming games. Weather is looking promising for match day. THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER

English footballs 10 most interesting stories

English players have always been a favourite of the media. With that said, some of the players seem to have tried their best to attract media attention. Here are some of the most interesting stories from the lives of footballers from England: Rice-ilicious lucky charm Jack Robinson, an English goalkeeper who first started playing in the 19th century, ate a plate of rice pudding before each match as he thought it gave him good luck. On the one occasion where he couldnt have his pre-match rice pudding he conceded a staggering 11 goals. The most expensive 1 coin Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher lost his rag when he was hit by a 1 coin during an FA Cup tie against Arsenal in 2002. The Liverpool legend picked up the coin and hurled it back into the crowd which prompted the referee to send him off, Liverpool to fine him 40,000 and England to drop him. Obscene mascot gets red Macclesfield Town mascot Roary the Lion was shown a straight red card following a players brawl in a match against Lincoln City in 1998. It transpired that the mascot had been making obscene gestures towards opposing players and fans while the brawl was taking place. Three second Pratt David Pratt lived up to his surname when he was sent off after just three seconds during the game between Chippenham Town and Bashley in England, 2008. Pratt

launched into a horrific challenge on an opposition opponent which left the referee with no choice but to send him from the field. Career threatening wit Rodney Marsh was well known during his playing days for having a quick wit. He cracked a joke in 1973 at the expense of England boss Sir Alf Ramsey, which caused the legendary England boss to stare him down in front of the dressing room and he never played for England again. He secured nine caps in his international career.

Fired on TV Former Queens Park Rangers assistant manager Bruce Rioch was left stunned when he learnt that he had been sacked from his job via the old British information TV service Ceefax. No one had physically told him about the decision to relieve him of his role in November 1997. Labor induction for England call-up The wife of Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright took marriage to another level when she agreed to have the birth of the pairs first baby induced. The reason was so that Wright would not be forced to miss an important match for the club as he was on the fringes of the England squad at the time. Fan in the dressing room An England fan managed to get into the England dressing room following the 0-0 draw against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup. It turned out that the fan was desperately looking for the toilet in the stadium but media reports suggested the fan had broken into the dressing room to have a go at Englands players. No goal, no shave Former Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann said he would not shave his bottom lip until he conceded a goal back in 2006. The American could not shave his bottom

lip for a staggering seven weeks which remains one of the best defensive spells in Readings history. Undisciplined mascot Bury FCs Robbie the Bobby has one of the worst discipline records for a football mascot. He was sent off a total of three times in three months in 2001 for a 30 yard run and celebration, for mooning after goals twice in one game and after a fight with Cardiff City mascot Barclay the Bluebird.

COACHES BOX A Tale of Polar Opposites:

This match was almost the direct polar opposite of our last run out at Sandown v Beachside. Well, actually it wasnt true it was remarkably similar in most aspects with the main difference being that the role we played in the match was in direct polar opposition to the match v Beachside, as was the result. We took to the field in polar conditions rain, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc. Being an aficionado of all things maritime I remember a couple of years back being out in the Derwent in some sort of boat or floating thing, as part of a flotilla commemorating the centenary of Doug Mawsons epic Antartic research voyage, which let me see, must have been close to one hundred years ago. They were probably heading on down there to escape the ravages of winter in Tassie as Im sure that nothing they encountered on the southern continent could have rivaled what our players withstood on Saturday. Cold, wind and driving rain, it was absolutely polar (Editors Note: Im pretty sure you mentioned that earlier). Things werent helped for me personally when I suffered a malfunction of the demister on my spectacles. Certainly Doug Mawson was a giant among men and was such a brave and inspiring explorer that he had an ice shelf named after him (Editors Note: thatll be Shackletons Ice Shelf, probably). Captain John Scott didnt fare so well on his expedition. His decision to take horses backfired when the horses became unsettled due to lack of grazing opportunities causing absolute panic resulting in bolting horses disappearing down crevices, giving rise to the well-known contemporary saying down a crevice minus a paddle or something like it. As the weather closed in its more than likely that Captain Scott contemplated that what he was experiencing was not dissimilar to the feeling experienced by General von Paulus at Stalingrad in 1943, or was it 1942? (Editors Note: but Scotts ill-fated expedition predated von Pauluss by some three decades). On the other hand Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who incidentally was brother of novelist Roald Dahl, was used to these conditions. He set out one morning with a pack of Alaskan sled-dogs including some Jack Russells, Great Danes, Scotch Terriers, Labradoodles and even more Jack Russells and he was safely back at camp for supper that same evening having conquered the south pole without raising a sweat. In fact Im sure he would have been back at camp in time for afternoon coffee and cakes had he been under the same sort of pressure as I am currently under to submit this in time for inclusion in Daves newsletter with the deadline fast approaching. So to cut to the chase our kids,

THE ROYAL RANT

Dear Parents We do what we do because we love doing it. For approximately 30 hours of games, 30 hours of training sessions and 60 hours of travel a year, we get a t-shirt. Really, it makes you a better person and you should get involved. In return for our services, apart from the t-shirt, we ask one thing. When your child comes to training, he or she does the best they can. As coaches we understand that some parts of training are more fun than other parts. We understand its at the end of the day. We understand that kids are kids because most of us were kids once too. As coaches, we'd like you to talk to your kids to ask them to do the best they can when they come to training. Listen when the coach talks, have a good go and respect all the other club members - players, coaches, families and others. Kicking balls away, disrupting others, wrestling and other such behaviour is not acceptable at training. Us coaches have been given instructions to "sit-out" those that disrupt the group. Often, a parent's presence is enough to bend behaviour and watching your child train for an hour with an RVL coffee is not such a bad thing. We have fun. We want to keep having fun. The message here is that the learning process of soccer (remember it is soccer training), the fun and the character growth of those that choose to participate will not be sacrificed for the disruptive minority. Thanks for talking to your child and we look forward to a fun and enjoyable year.

Edition 10 22 June 8. Match Reports Cygnet U/6

It was great to see our u6 soccer stars braving the weather and the chilly 9.00am kick off to put on a dazzling display of soccer skills. We started slow with no score in the first ten minutes, and it looked like it was going to be a well matched contest. Then we scored two goals before half time and our confidence grew. When we came out in the second half the flood gates opened, and we added another 6 goals to beat Margate 8-nil. Flynn had some great kicks and moves, however he found the meltdowns and temper tantrums (That the other team were having) a bit distracting, putting him off his game in the second half. Archie showed some great skills and clever technique turning the ball and steering it towards the goals, he is really coming along well. William played his usual enthusiastic game, chasing well and pushing through a wall of opposition to score a well earned goal. Charlie Gorringe played a good strong game of soccer, working through the Margate defensive line to score three goals, and blocked twice as many attempts from the opposition. Charlie Hooper had his best result so far, scoring 4 goals and stopping the Margate strikers with superior foot work and skills. It was a proud day for the coach, seeing this team develop their skills and sense of the game. Alby Cygnet U6 8 def Margate Red 0 (Charlie Hooper 4, Charlie Gorringe 3, William Morgan 1)

The weather held off to a light drizzle which we hardly noticed due to this exciting game. St. Aloysius played a great game making us fight to gain possession of the ball. The game was evenly matched this time. We only came away with the win due to our improved passing and ball handling skills. Well done boys! Edition 10 22 June Cygnet U/8 Green

It was testing weather that confronted the U8 Green v Kingborough Lions Black. The first half was played in consistent rain and the kids and ref were cold and wet. Despite this, the kids put in a solid performance to go into half time 2-0 up even tho the goals at Kingborough are half the size of those at Cygnet (and most other grounds). This match saw close to goal of the season. The ball was played out of the back to the wings, 4 passes, awesome first touches and into the back of the net. It was a goal the U14 Youth team would have been proud of. Great game kids and particular mention to Kate for slotting away her first goal of the season (even tho she has hit 4 posts and had numerous narrow misses).

Well as coach of the U6s U 7s and U 8s for the past three years writing this report is a somewhat new experiencea loss! It may appear contradictory but everyone, as a team, played their best match to date. The Sea Dragons had 80% of the procession and 80% of the field position but most importantly the trap/ look up / pass the ball / and move quickly drill that we have been practicing at training, was being undertaken for the first time in the match. Although we lost the match to a flukeish goal we had the opportunity to compete, have fun, learn and to implement our training drills. For Michaela and I as coaches. it was a positive experience to see the rudimentary passes and the developing skills which, in the long run, will form the basis for a talented team into the future. The Sideline Scribe Cygnet U8 White 0 lost to Calvin 1

Cygnet U/9 Green

The U9 Greens put on a nail biter against a good opposition this week. 2 early goals from the Lions suggested we might be facing a nasty defeat but the Greens brought it back to 2-1 at half time. The defence and goalie got a work out in the first quarter but the team slowly moved into action and by the end of the game everyone was on top form and brought it back to deserved 3-3 draw.

Tim had a blinder of a game, defending brilliantly and working well up forward for a lot of the match. Cobi did a great job in goals again and put in a huge effort in both defence and up front in the second half, scoring a great goal too. Demi worked tirelessly in defence , clearing the ball up field whenever it came her way. Oscar O did a job in goals, saving a few massive shots that looked destined for the net in second half. And Denzel put in his usual skilful attacks, notching up another two goals for the season. Leeroy also moved his game a couple of notches higher this match with a few good runs and tackles. Liams boot proved itself again in getting the ball up forward and Jase saw good action too. Great to see everyone putting in such a good effort. What a dreary day. We watched the rain pour down at home and wondered if the game would be cancelled, but not to be so we headed out the door in the rain for our midday match on the Domain. The opposition coach did say they had tried to call to see if we wanted to cancel but hadn't been able to get through - I told him we were made of sterner stuff. A full complement of Seadragons meant we had two subs but it was hard to keep the kids warm off the field and hard to keep most of them running in the rain on field. Particularly tough for our goalie, Toby, in the first half who could barely see through the sleeting rain (with some occasional spots of sun trying to break through), but likewise for the Sacred Heart goalie in the second half. Note to coach - contact lens a better option than glasses on rainy days! The game started off well with Codi scoring the first goal within the first few minutes, quickly evened up by Sacred Heart. Another to Codi, and then an own goal against us took us into half time at 2 all. Although the team played well and had some great moments between them, it was not to be our day - the final score was 4 to Sacred Heart and 2 to Cygnet. There were some very close misses in the second half, Ina's ball didn't quite have enough power to defeat the friction of the pools of water, Codi tried to avert this problem by kicking high with his ball sailing over the top of the goal. Ned made some terrific saves as second half goalie. Ina and Riley are showing great potential as backs, really getting in and stealing the ball with some fancy footwork. Romi and Saras had a good run of the field with some good attacking play. Toby put on a really good show as a forward this week with Elliot and Rory playing good consistent games as we have come to expect from these boys. Well done to everyone who ventured out on such a bleak day. Well deserved hot chocolates enjoyed by many after the match. Cygnet U9 White 2 lost to Sacred Heart 4 (Codi B 2)

A cracking day on the Green for the U10 Green Machine. Once we started putting forward pressure on, the Zebras struggled to get the ball out of their half. Goalies barely touched the ball and that defensive line was a brick wall. They had some very good players and we dealt with them accordingly. We had some fantastic through balls and great switches that kept the flow across the whole ground. A really, really good game to watch - probably the best game I have seen these guys play in 4 years.

Edition 10 22 June U/12 Sea Dragons

Before kick off I was told by my team how big the opposition were and how good they had been last season..? So I told the guys "just get the ball down and play football" and "if we play like we did in training last night we'll beat anyone" Unusually for us, we got off to a really good start with everyone keeping position and tracking back. It was an even game with both sides scrapping it out in midfield on a slippery surface. We missed a couple of easy chances, but we were concentrating and staying in the match with everyone upping their game and supporting each other. A tight game was definitely on the cards and through the occasional rain we battled our way to go in at half time honours even at 0 - 0 A quick change at the break and yet more determined pressure and we were in the ascendancy, this soon led to Sorin cracking a beauty and for the first time all season the U12's had the lead and something to hang onto. But we didn't stop, we kept going for another goal and the goalkeepers from both sides had some serious saves to make on such a wet slidy pitch. There was no way we were getting beat or even sharing the points today and everyone in a Sea Dragons shirt scrapped and blocked their way to the final whistle. A fantastic result today and well overdue (in my opinion). A solid TEAM performance with everyone covering each other both offensively and in defence. Apart from some long range efforts, we didn't have much to deal with all game and as much as I'm really glad we got our first our win of the season..!!! I'm also really proud of the defence and sweepers who kept our first clean sheet. So two milestones in one game... What was it I said to the team before the match..... "If we play like we did in training last night we'll beat anyone" And sure enough we did... Cygnet U12 Sea Dragons 1 def Princess St 0 (Sorin 1)
