PART – B (5 x 12 = 60)
Answer All the Questions

11. (a) List the advantages of electronic instruments over electrical

and mechanical instruments?
(b) What are the various functional elements of an
instrumentation system? Explain.
(or)
12. (a) Describe the principles of operation of a deflection type and
a Null type instrument? (8)
(b) Enumerate the applications of measurement systems? (4)

13. Discuss the various systematic errors with suitable examples?

Explain the measures taken to minimize these errors?
(or)
14. (a) What are the effects of electromagnetic interference? How it

is avoided?
(b) Define the following in the content of normal frequency
distribution of data Mean, Standard deviation, Variance and
Average deviation.

15. (a) Describe with neat diagrams, the mechanical devices used as

primary detectors. Drive their outputs in terms of their

physical dimensions?
(b) Explain the construction of wire wound strain gauges and
derive the expression for the gauge factor?
(or)
16. (a) Describe the different criteria for selection of transducers for

a particular application? (4)

(b) Derive the expression for error for a resistance potential
divider when connected across a load of finite resistance.
Derive the condition for maximum error. (8)

17. (a) Mention the advantages of capacitive transducers?

(b) Explain the different principles of working of capacitive
transducers?
(or)
18. Explain the construction and principle of working of a LVDT.
Explain how the magnitude and direction of the displacement of
core of an LVDT detected? Why is the frequency of excitation of
primary winding kept very high as compared to the frequency of
the signal being detected?
19. Draw the equivalent circuit of piezo-electric transducers. Derive
the expression for magnitude of voltage across the load by
making simplifying assumptions. Prove that for medium and high
frequencies, the magnitude of the voltage across the load is
independent of frequency?
(or)
20. Describe the following:
(a) Tachometer Encoder
(b) Incremental Encoder
(c) Absolute Encoder
