The plasma membrane encloses a semiuid substance called the cytoplasm and the cells genetic material. The plasma membrane regulates what enters and exits cells; the cytoplasm carries on chemical reactions; and the genetic material provides the information needed for growth and reproduction. When a cell reproduces, it produces more cells. The concepts that all organisms are composed of cells, and that cells come only from preexisting cells, are the two central tenets of the cell theory. Cells are divided into two main types according to the way their genetic material is organized. Prokaryotic cells are so named because they lack a membranebounded nucleus. Their DNA is located in a region of the cytoplasm called the nucleoid. The other type of cell, called a eukaryotic cell, has a nucleus that houses its DNA.
