Kangaroo and crocodile steaks, ostrich burgers, bison and boar sausages, squirrel, shark and rattlesnake these

are some of the so-called delicacies being served in restaurants in the UK. Behind these gourmet meals lies a catalogue of suffering. Wildlife is being destroyed at an alarming rate. 75 per cent of the earths animals are facing extinction or are in decline. Every day, species die out yet more and more animals are being slaughtered for food. Whether bred in captivity or killed in the wild, these animals suffer a violent, premature and unnecessary death. Help Viva! protect our planets wildlife! Boycott exotic meats!

Give wildlife a break - boycott exotic meats

Stop the slaughter of global wildlife

Under fire
Every year millions of kangaroos are massacred in the Australian outback for their meat and skin. Many are shot in the throat, neck or jaw and die slowly and painfully from their injuries. The unwanted baby joeys are bludgeoned, shot or left to die of starvation and neglect.

Crocodile tears
In the wild, crocodiles live in dark mangrove swamps but on intensive farms they are crammed into tiny, filthy and overcrowded pens with barely enough room to move. At just three years of age they are shot, clubbed to death or killed by having their spine severed.

Man eating shark

Spiny dogfish shark is sold in supermarkets and fish & chip shops disguised as huss or rock salmon. Sharks die a slow, agonising death in trawler nets and will be in direct threat from overexploitation if intensive fishing continues. It is estimated the worldwide dogfish population has halved during the last 10 years.

Sainsburys persists in selling ostrich in selected stores. Please complain to: Sir Peter Davis, Managing Director, Sainsburys Supermarkets Ltd, 33 Holborn, London EC1N 2HT or call 0800 636262.

Nowhere to hide
Ostriches live in the dry plains of Africa where they can run up to 40 mph and cover 25 feet in a single stride. On British farms they are cooped up in muddy paddocks where their instincts are totally frustrated. Unable to shed rain from their feathers they are at risk from pneumonia and exposure. Their natural lifespan can be up to 70 years yet farmed ostriches are killed at 12 months old.
