Some English words are words are powerfully expressive and challenging at the same time; as well as dull and impressive at the same time. Steadfast is such a word. It is not one of those words that is a part of a common conversation. When was the last time you heard a wife describe her husband by saying, He is a really steadfast guy, and I love him for it. We use other words. We might say that someone is loyal. We might say that a person is committed. In a more colorful way, we sometimes tell that such a one is stuck like glue. In praise, we might tell that a friend is always there when I need him. Really, all of these are what we have in this somewhat archaic word. So, the word may not be in common use, but the meaning is still a treasure. And they continued. They did it in a steadfast way. It was steady or consistent, and it was unrelenting. They just would not release or quit. They held to what they knew they ought to do. It was what they needed to do. Excuses are easy in any day They would have been easy to find in the earliest days. There was still a certain fear of the religious establishment. No matter how good and true the cause may be, it is still hard to break with long held tradition. They made no excuse. They just grabbed the message and refused to let it go. Steadfastness may be one of the most needed qualities in our time. Long term loyalty is a rare and precious commodity. Too often, if we get a better offer, loyalty loses any value to us. On the one side we may find it hard to find much to which to be loyal. Too much of what we see around us seems to be on shifting sand. Discernment is surely needed. Still, dont we have something worth our loyal steadfastness? Yes!!! Russ
