Indoor Climate System Chilled Beams Energy Optimised Solutions

Delivering solutions greater than the sum of their parts

Today everyone is inuenced by 3 factors in the design of Indoor climate systems Indoor air quality Energy consumption Capital costs Flkt Woods understand the importance of these factors and believe a complete systems approach is required to deliver on all three points. In other words, we can deliver the Optimised Energy Solution for tomorrows requirements. With our extensive experience in this field, we have carefully chosen products from our wide range, coupled them together with smart controls and come up with solutions that can reduce energy consumption by 50%.

e3 Flkt Woods Integrated advantages Twin Wheels

Rotary heat exchangers provide energy efficient heating and cooling recovery Twin Wheel controller operates rotors and cooling coil in sequence to meet set dew-point values Providing indoor air quality by maintaining humidity Following the Kyoto protocol, the European Union set targets to reduce energy consumption. For buildings, the initial target was set at a 22% reduction by 2010. Since then the more stringent targets have been set for future years. These targets are set under the EPBD directive.

Chillers
Designed to minimise overall energy consumption Free cooling chillers significantly reduce energy consumption especially with chilled beam systems Provide reduced investment and running costs

To address the requirements of the EPBD directive, Flkt Woods has poured a lot of effort into creating the e3 Concept. Our solution is a broad approach leaving no stone unturned to achieve optimum results. High-performing components provide a good start, but it is by combining products into an integrated system, utilising smart control, that one can achieve the best energy solutions. The e3 logo is used to highlight products and systems that deliver savings on Energy, Economy and the Environment.

Flexible, comfortable and energy efcient climate for the modern ofce
In these more energy and indoor air quality conscious days, chilled beam systems have come the fore. Predominantly due to the energy benets over alternative systems such as fan coil units, the chilled beam system also provides an incredibly stable environment which adds to the occupants wellbeing and satisfaction. Flkt Woods have now moved this on a stage with the introduction of our new iQ Star range of chilled beams. These beams not only give you the indoor air quality but due to the addition of smart controls, the Stella and Astra are able to provide variable airow rates. This means that demand control ventilation has been added to an already energy efcient system providing the end user with additional energy savings. That, coupled with our ow pattern control and energy (comfort) control, leads to these beams offering you full exibility to adapt to any future changes in room layout.

Twin Wheel AHU

The Twin Wheel system contains three main parts; the hygroscopic rotor, a cooling coil and a sensible rotor.

PL
3
The now dehumidied and cooled air continues to the sensible rotor, where heat from exhaust air is recovered and used to re-heat it. The air is supplied to the building, with controlled levels of both temperature and humidity. Note that the temperature exchange in the sensible rotor, where exhaust air is cooled, further improves the cooling recovery of exhaust air in the hygroscopic rotor!

1
When outdoor air is warmer than the exhaust airow there is a need for cooling. The hygroscopic rotor then reduces temperature of the incoming air. Simultaneously it transfers moisture from the inbound to the outbound air ows (in cases where absolute humidity is higher outdoors)

2
After passing through the hygroscopic rotor the air passes through the cooling coil, where the temperature is reduced further and moisture is condensated down to required levels. Since the air has already been cooled by the hygroscopic rotor, the demand for cooling is lowered. The saving can be up to 50% of the nominal required cooling effect, while at the same time the need for a following re-heating battery in most cases disappears.

Flow Pattern Control

The unique Flow Pattern Control (FPC) can direct the airflow up to 45 degrees through integrated vanes. Different directions can be set at sections of 300 mm in the beam.

As we understand, chilled beam systems create high quality indoor environments which are incredibly energy efcient. But because of the nature of the chilled beam system, it is possible for us to use more energy efcient components as part of the complete system. On the following pages you will see both our Twin Wheel Air Handling Units and our Free Cooling Chillers. Both of these components can offer signicant savings and can only be utilised to their full extent because of the nature of the chilled beam system.

Free Cooling Chillers

Chilled beam systems dont run on low chilled water temperatures in the same way as fan coil systems do. Due to the nature of the system, higher chilled water temperatures are necessary and this leads to another potential energy saving by utilising free cooling chillers. Because there are long periods of time where the ambient air condition is cooler than the return water temperature, we can cool the water without running the compressors. This not only reduces wear and tear on them, prolonging the life of the chiller, but offers signicant annual energy savings. The chart below shows savings of around 35% for London based projects. Whilst typically a free cooling chiller will save 35% for a 14/17 chiller there is still a requirement for a 6/12 chilled water chiller for the fresh air. This gives an overall saving for a typical chilled beam system of 26%.

The chart above shows energy comparisons between Chilled Beam and Fan Coil Unit systems with different options of AHU and Chiller. The Fan Coil Unit system does not have the free cooling option as they operate on lower chilled water temperatures. As you can see an energy reduction of approx 50% can be achieved by utilising a Chilled Beam System with Twin Wheel AHU and free Cooling System option.

Case Study: Greenwich Peninsula - London, England

As part of what is believed to be one of the largest chilled beam contracts in the London area, Flkt Woods has supplied the complete 1.25 million ventilation solution for the Peninsula Central ofce development, part of the Terry Farrells Greenwich Peninsula master plan in London. In addition to Flkt Woods supplying over 2,300 active chilled beams, they are also providing airhandling units, VAV boxes and displacement terminals. At 196,000sq ft the rst of two developments 14 Pier Walk was opened in June 2009 and will form one of 3 new head ofce hubs for Transport for London. TFL have taken a 20 year lease on the building with the rst of 1800 staff already at work at the-state-of-the-art green ofce. The new twin wheel technology is expected to reduce energy costs on summer cooling. Craig MacFadyen, Systems Product Manager explains, Using our knowledge of twin wheel technology and active chilled beam systems, Flkt Woods engineers have created a more efcient method of providing dehumidication to the primary fresh air.

Note: Chiller completely paid off in 4 years 4 months. Total energy saving of 244,660 in 20 years (0.076/kWh). Real saving = 191,160 for 11 the chiller or 231,160 for the cost of the free cooling element of the chiller. Total saving of 1360 tonnes of CO2 over 20 years (based on UK carbon outputs of 0.422 kg/kWh). Total CO2 without free cooling would be 3900 tonnes over 20 years.
