Foundation in TESL
Program Overview
3 long semesters (1 year) 14 weeks per semester 17 subjects (14 compulsory + 3 MQA subjects)
YEAR ONE
The Department of English at HELP offers a variety of English courses which cater to local and international students. Joining our list of reputable courses is the Foundation in TESL (FTESL) aimed at providing a wide-ranging foundation for TESL teachers. FTESL incorporates the latest innovations to make your learning experience engaging, flexible and comprehensive. A pool of highly qualified and experienced practitioners in the field ensure course quality and vitality.
BA in TESL (Hons)
Entry Requirements
SPM/SPVM with at least 5 credits including English and Bahasa Malaysia or GCE O-Levels with at least 5 credits or equivalent qualification Pass the entry interview
English is the lingua franca for commerce, science, communications and technology. Most of the worlds knowledge is stored in this language. Malaysians have an advantage in developing these fields if they are familiar with the language in which the greatest amount of research is written. In countries where English is not the mother tongue like Malaysia, learning English has become not only necessary but essential. It is the most widely used language all over the world today and it is also the INTERNET language. Certainly when one is well-versed in the English language, the information world is open wide for knowledge exploration and for keeping in touch with the latest developments. This BA in TESL (Hons) program will arm the graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach English as a Second Language. We have a great program and a great team of lecturers to lead the participants to greater heights in acquiring teaching skills in the English language. We invite all of you to join us in this Education endeavour which is exciting as well as fruitful, preparing one and all for the challenges ahead in English language acquisition and teaching in this language.

BPhil (Education) (Birmingham), MA (Applied Linguistics) (Essex), PhD (NUS), CertEd (Sheffield) Head, Department of English Dr Hare has over 30 years experience in teaching TESL/TEFL and Linguistics. He has been involved in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for individuals, companies and organizations. He has worked in Qatar, Singapore and Malaysia. For over 20 years, he worked at the International Islamic University Malaysia, where he was involved in setting up and teaching courses for the BA in English, MA in ESL, and the PhD in ESL. At IIUM, he was also co-editor of the online journal Asiatic published by the Department of English. Dr Hare has published and presented papers internationally. His research interests are Course Design and Evaluation, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Functional Grammar.
