Upgrades shaking up rodeo layout

s the weather heats up in Folsom, the Folsom Chamber dials up the fun with our 53rd annual Folsom Pro Rodeo set for July 4- 6. Were bullish on this event which is a Sacramento area tradition of outstanding family entertainment over the July 4th holiday. This event is an economic magnet as it attracts visitors from a 60-mile radius and results in a several million dollar boost to the local economy each summer. The chamber is working on exciting changes to the event this year. In particular, we are designing a new look to the arena including a new seating area close to the bucking chutes. An additional chuck wagon area will give fans easy access to refreshments close to their seats. Our in-arena fireworks show promises to be outstanding. It is the only one of its kind in the area. To kick off this celebration, we are hosting the Country Concert on the Green set for June 29 on the lawn at Rodeo Park. Featuring four talented country music artists including Brett Eldredge, Steve Holy, Dave Russell and Stacy Stone, the event is geared to

Jim Williams has rodeo dust in his veins

BY EYRAGON EIDAM

very year it takes around 200 people several weeks to prepare for the Folsom Pro Rodeo and the thousands of guests who visit the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena. Perhaps no one is more aware of the work that goes into putting on a production of this caliber than 53-year rodeo veteran Jim Digger Williams. This year, Williams is serving as the Grand Marshal of the Folsom Pro Rodeo with the help of Diggers Crew, 24 youngsters who pull their weight to get muttons busted and the show going. He has seen Folsoms population grow from around 5,000 to roughly 73,000, businesses sprout up where there were once empty fields, and the rodeo he helped to create become a regional tradition. In the 53 years that weve been here, a tremendous lot has changed, said Williams. Williams and his wife, Sharon, came to Folsom in 1960 and he said they didnt waste any time throwing themselves into the volunteer work needed throughout the community. As he sees it, volunteerism is a way of life and said its how he raised his family since day one. Ask not what your city can do for you, but what you can do for your city, said Williams in his take on John F. Kennedys famous words. local cemetery, recounted his involvement in the rodeo with no small amount of pride. According to Williams, the late Jack Kipp, a longtime politician in Folsom, gave him the nickname. He said the ongoing upgrades to the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena have taken it from a simple dirt arena with wooden bleachers to a mod-

ern facility with restrooms and concession stands. Its gotten more popular every year and just about every year we sell out, said Williams. But, Williams said he isnt always at the front of the herd when it comes to the duties of putting on the rodeo. He jokingly recounts all the time he spent at the back of the herd cleaning up after the cattle drive as it made its way through town. His efforts as a strong community contributor and volunteer go far from unnoticed by those around him. Joe Gagliardi, president and CEO of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, said the longtime Folsomite and rodeo

powerhouse has been incredibly valuable to not only the chamber, but the community as well. His passion for the sport and for this event is just incredible, said Gagliardi. We are fortunate to have him in this community. For now, Williams has no plans of slowing down when it comes to his involvement in the Folsom Pro Rodeo. He said the rodeo is in his blood and doesnt plan on stopping any time soon. Our lives have been dedicated to it for the last 53 years, said Williams of the rodeo he helped to establish. How to survive the Folsom Pro Rodeo

re you a city slicker? Havent been to the Folsom Pro Rodeo in years? Or, is an evening of wild western fun a yearly tradition for your family? Whatever the case, weve got insider tips for everyone planning to attend this years event.

I want to buy a ticket

Purchasing tickets to the Folsom Pro Rodeo is easy and frankly, there isnt a bad seat in the arena. New this year is the Corral Club seating located right next to the bucking chutes. These seats offer an incredible view of the action and offer no-host beverage service. These roomy reserved seats are $35. There are two other types of seating avail-

able, reserved ($24.50 all seats) and general admission ($19.50, $15 seniors/children under 12). Reserved seating, only available for purchase online, is a numbered seat. If you dont want to hunt for the perfect seat, just choose best available and let the computer do the rest. General admission is available online, at the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, Handleys Western Wear and at other select locations (see www.folsomrodeo.com for details). If you require ADA seating or have special needs, we ask that you call the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, (916) 985-2698 for assistance.

The Buckaroo Pack of course. Take advantage of this deal which includes four general admission tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for the bargain price of $65. These package deals go quickly and are only available online (a service fee applies).

Does my 2-year-old need a ticket?

Yes, they do. Unless they are an infant and will sit in your lap the entire rodeo, all rodeo fans must have a ticket. Due to fire marshal regulations, no strollers are allowed in the arena. You can park your stroller near the entrance gates.

Are tickets available at the arena?

So are you one of those last minute decision makers? Yes, the box office at the arena will be open beginning at 6 p.m. and tickets will be sold as available. Tickets at the box office are $36 for Corral Club, $26 for reserved, $19.50 for general admission and $15 for seniors over 62 and youths 10 and under.

What should I bring to the rodeo?

Art teacher promotes rodeo through creativity

EYRAGON EIDAM
TELEGRAPH CORRESPONDENT

The arena wont be the only thing looking shiny and new for this years rodeo guests. More than 50 official rodeo banners will showcase the art of one local artist for the thousands of rodeo attendees. Janeen Meyer Johansen, artist, teacher, and winner of the Folsom Arts Association banner design contest, said her inspiration was the embodiment of rodeo life cowboy boots and fireworks. I thought about rodeo, and Folsom, and fireworks, and a nice pair of boots, said Johansen. Johansen hopes her artwork will help to draw more attention to the vibrant art community in Folsom.

Charlie Too Tall West calls Loomis home but has deep roots with the Folsom Rodeo.

Too Tall may be barreling into final rodeo

BY PENNE USHER
TELEGRAPH CORRESPONDENT

After more than 30 years in the rodeo and clowning business Charlie Too Tall West

might call it quits after this season. West, reportedly the smallest professional barrel clown in the world, has been in the

business 33 years and will be at this years Folsom Pro Rodeo. The 4-foot, 6-inch, barrelman-style clown well known for his one-liners and keeping

the crowd entertained, started with the Flying U Rodeo in 1982. Im going though the season, but I dont know what

FOLSOM RODEO
next year will entail, West said in a recent phone interview. Enough is enough. West caught the rodeo bug decades ago when his mother worked at the Folsom Rodeo as a secretary. Hes been in the business ever since. Back surgery in 2009 almost ended his rodeo career. West said he was advised back then to call it quits. Now, my bodys telling me its time for a change and change is good, he said. Rodeo clowns date back to the beginnings of competitive rodeo in the early 1900s when promoters hired cowboys to entertain the crowd between events. The entertainers began wearing oversized, baggy clothing and eventually developed more outlandish gear. When bull riding competition began to use illtempered Brahma bulls in the 1920s, the need for a person to distract the bull from fallen riders fell to the rodeo clown. The use of a barrel for protection began during the 1930s. West, known as Too Tall, has been delighting rodeo fans for years. I remember seeing him at rodeos in the area, said Sheila Burton of Shingle Springs. What I remember most is his wit. He always had something funny to say. When asked if there were anything hed miss about the rodeo, West said not much. The places Ive been and the things Ive seen and the crowds applause I might miss that, he said. Its really hard to say, but there are other tings to do out there. Other things such as Monster Truck races, which have kept West busy during the winter months. And then theres always golf. Id play more golf and work on my short game, he said, Get it? My short game. West, who makes his home in Loomis, can often be found on one of many of the areas golf courses There are there are lots of cool course around here, he said.

ig changes are underway to the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena to make this years Folsom Pro Rodeo better than ever before. Some of the major changes will include additional seating and new concession areas positioned to improve access for rodeo-goers. Marcia Durst, with Durst Event Strategies, is overseeing the renovations and said she is looking forward to seeing the historic facility brought up to modern standards. This was a long time coming, said Durst. It was time to bring it up to modern standards and because of that, we are shifting some of the infrastructure just a little bit. The improvements are being made just as the 2013 Folsom Pro Rodeo is preparing to put the arena through its annual paces with professional bull riding, mutton busting, and thousands of excited fans. Durst said the updated

facilities will make the grounds more convenient and more comfortable than years past and will ultimately lead to a more efficient show. In all, upgrades will be finished towards the end of this month. What its allowed us to do is bring in a new bank of seating thats going allow us to provide an upgraded experience, said Durst. Its close to the action as well as coming with no-host, seatside beverage service. Jim Digger Williams, grand marshal for this years rodeo, said he is looking forward to the improvements not only for the sake of the riders and performers, but also for the safety of the animals. Williams has long been a driving force behind the popular community event and said the ongoing changes will help to give longevity to the rodeo. Hopefully, well be able to keep making as much money as we have been, said Williams. Just keep on keeping on.

Rodeo cowboys live the sport

A
professional cowboy doesnt get paid to compete. He pays for the privilege. He doesnt travel in luxury and usually spends hours driving from event to event. If he wins his event, he will likely earn the amount of money equal to the cost of getting to the Folsom Pro Rodeo. Rodeo is the only sport in the world developed from a job. In the old west, cowboys from different ranches challenged each other on who could do their work faster and more efficiently. The seven events in professional rodeo remain true to their origins. All sanctioned Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association rodeos have these events such as the popular bull and bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, saddlebronc riding, calf roping and team roping. At the Folsom Pro Rodeo, set for July 4- 6, cowboys compete in timed events street wrestling, calf roping and team roping at 7 p.m. followed by grand entry at 8:15 p.m. Following the grand entry are the riding events including bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and of course, the popular mutton busting. There are specific rules for each competition. Here is a brief summary about the events.
Bull Riding: While most of the

rodeo events have roots in ranch work, bull riding evolved from the cowboys fearless and perhaps foolhardy nature. With those massive horns and pure attitude, its easy to see bull riding is the most dangerous sport in rodeo. A bull bucks differently than a horse, so the rider must be prepared for a downward thrust that could throw him over the animals head. The surprisingly agile bull, which weighs about 2,000 pounds, often spins as he bucks. Bull riders ride only with a flat-braided rope pulled tight around the bull and across their gloved riding hand. The

rider uses his free arm and body to counter the bulls spins and lunges, while spurring with his feet. For a qualified ride, the rider must hold onto the rope and not touch the ground or any part of the bull with his free hand or arm for eight seconds. If even his hand brushes the animal, he is disqualified. Extra points are awarded for spurring and turning out the toes. The athletic performance of both the cowboy and the bull determines the score. Steer Wrestling: Speed and strength are tested in steer wrestling. This event is the quickest in rodeo and lasts three to five seconds. The steer wrestler or bulldogger begins

his run behind a barrier with his hazer, a second cowboy who keeps the steer from veering away from the wrestler. The two chase the steer until the wrestler is in position to jump off his horse and on to the racing steer. He hooks his right arm around the steers right horn and grasps the left horn in his left hand and then digs in his heels deep in the dirt to use leverage to bring down the steer. To put it in perspective, the cowboy and steer are usually moving at about 30 mph and the steer generally weighs at least twice as much as the cowboy. Its easy to see the challenge here. The winner is determined by the fastest time. Barrel Racing: Womens barrel racing is an important part of the rugged sport of professional rodeo. The clock is the one and only judge of this contest. A rider must run barrels in a cloverleaf pattern starting at either side of the pattern. The distance between the barrels varies with the size of the arena. The barrel racer is allowed a running start and is timed with an electronic timer. The rider is disqualified if the pattern is incorrectly run. Any time under 17 seconds is considered to be excellent. In barrel racing, the coordination between horse and rider is crucial. Saddle Bronc Riding: This is the classic event of the rodeo. It requires the balance of a gymnast, the timing of a springboard diver and the grace of a dancer - all aboard a 1,200 pound twisting, pitching horse. For a qualified ride, a saddle bronc riders feet must touch the horses shoulders on the first jump out of the chute. The rider, gripping a thick rein attached to the horses halter, attempts to place his feet over

the horses shoulders a split second before the animals feet strike the ground. As the horse bucks, the rider bends his knees and finishes his spurring stroke near the cantle (back of the saddle) then snaps his feet back to the horses shoulders as the animals front feet hit the ground. Unlike bareback riding, the cowboy is aiming for a fluid ride in tune with the horse and hes prevented from touching the horse with his free hand. The event is judged by both time and physical performance of both horse and rider. Bareback Riding: To get an idea of the strength required in bareback riding, imagine riding a jackhammer as if it were a pogo stick, holding on with only one hand. This event is considered the most demanding. Riders gasp a rigging, a handhold made of leather which is secured to the horse with a cinch. After the initial jump out of the chute, the cowboy pulls his spurs up the horses neck and shoulders until the spurs are nearly touching the rigging. A bareback rider is judged on his spurring technique and how far he leans back to take whatever happens during his ride.
Tie-down Roping: One of the oldest events in rodeo, tiedown roping, dates back to the Old West when ranch hands used to chase down sick or injured calves and immobilized them for treatment. After giving the calf a predetermined head start, the horse and rider give chase. When the rider las-

sos the calf, he dismounts, runs to the calf and ties any three legs together using a pigging string. When the roper has completed his tie, he throws his hands in the air as a signal to timers. He then remounts his horse and rides toward the calf making the rope slack. The calf must remain tied for six seconds after the rope is slack or the cowboy will receive no time. Team Roping: This is the only true team event in professional rodeo. One cowboy, the header, waits behind a barrier until the steer has taken its head start. He must rope the steer around one horn, two horns or around the neck. The heeler follows the header by roping the steers hind feet. Catching only one foot with the rope results in a five-second penalty. This is a timed event.
