The basic steps are the same, in any types of data that you are going to enter.
1. Select/Click the cell where you want to enter the data. 2. Type/Insert the data in the active cell. 3. Press the Enter/Arrow key(s) to enter the data.
to tell you that it is now the active cell. If youre not sure which cell is active cell, look at the Name Box. The name box shows the cell address or the active cell.
You can Insert the data on either Name Box

Formula Bar. If where you find it easier. Active Cell: Once the active cell is selected, you can now start your typing/inserting data. Formula Bar: click the Formula Bar and start typing there. When you start typing, youll see the Cancel button (X), the Enter button().
can either press the Enter key, or pressing an arrow key (, , , ) to move on another cell. After Entering/Typing the data on the Formula Bar, you can either press the Enter key, or click the Enter button () on the formula bar.
If you change your mind about entering data, click the Cancel button ( what you entered and start over.
Use this function to expand the Formula Bar for a better view.
Should know:
If the cell on the right of the active cell is empty, the text will spill into the next cell. If the cell contains data, the entry gets cut off. But it will remain there, nothing gets lost when it cant be displayed on-screen. The text or numbers cant see except on formula bar, where the contents of the cell can be seen in their entirely.
When a number is too large to fit in a cell, you will see pounds signs (###) instead of displaying the number in scientific notation. The complete data is shown in the formula bar as always. You can widen the column to display the entire numbers. When entering a fraction, always leave a blank space between the whole number and the fraction. For example, to enter 1 type the 1, press the spacebar, and type
Entering a date or time value in a cell can be problematic because theses values must be entered in such a way that Excel can recognize them as dates or times, not text. Entering date values m/d/yy 3/18/92 m-d-yy 2-11-93 d-mmm-yy 7-Aug-13 After you enter a date this way, it will automatically converts to a format for a date: 3/18/1992. If you dont enter the year, Excel assumes that the date you entered is in the current year. (You can enter fractions as well as dates in cells with the forward slash. However, to make sure that Excel recognizes the entry as a fraction, place a 0 in front of the fraction, if necessary. Excel interprets 3/18 as March 18, but if you enter 0 3/18, Excel understands youre entering a fraction.)
Should know:
When it comes to entering two-digit years in dates, the digits 30 through 99 belong to the 20th century (1930 1999), but the digits 00 through 29 belong to the 21st century (2000 2029). For example, 8/7/13 refers to August 7, 2013, not August 7, 1913. To enter a date in 1929 or earlier, enter four digits instead of two to describe the year: 8-7-1929. To enter a date in 2030 or later, enter four digits instead of two: 7-4-2030. Dates entered in these formats are treated as text entries, not date values, and cant be used in calculations: July 4, 1993 07 August 2013 To enter a date directly in a formula, enclose the date in quotation marks (and make sure that the cell where the formula is entered has been given the Number format, not the Date format). For example, the formula =today()-3/18/2013 calculates the number of days that have elapsed since March 18, 2013.
Entering time values h:mm AM/PM 9:30 AM h:mm:ss AM/PM 9:30:45 PM Hours, minutes, and seconds must be separated by colons(:). Unless you enter AM or PM with the time, Excel assumes that youre operating on military time. For example, 9:30 is considered 9:30 am, not 9:30 in the evening.
Combining date and time values You can combine dates and time values by entering the date, a blank space, and the time: 7/4/93 9:30 am 8-7-13 9:30:45 pm Shortcuts for entering the current time or date in a cell: Press Ctrl+; (semicolon) to enter the current date; press Ctrl+Shift+; (semicolon) to enter the current time.
