The Human Machine and Its 3 Brains The Movers and Shakers Inside YOU

In this first lesson you will learn: The most amazing revelation about yourself you have been made to think that you only have 1 Brain wait till you discover 2 more brains in your body and how a balanced use of all 3 can make you a master of your mind, emotions and body What is the root cause of incompatibilities between you and your spouse or girl/boy friend and how this simple knowledge of your 3 Brains can help you understand each other clearly well most of the times Why following the 1 Brain theory is a sure shot way to worry, stress, depression, an unhappy marriage, premature ageing and chronic diseases The shocking truth about why we age nobody else will tell you How the imbalanced use of the 3 Brains is the main cause of all stress, anxiety and tension in your life and what you can do to balance them and how to maintain this balance for continuous peace and clarity And MORE! So let's begin.... How many Brains do you have?

Our normal answer is One The Thinking or Intellectual, in the head And this is what we have been taught since childhood from the pre-school to the PhD level. Usually, we use the word brain for the grey mass that we have in the skull. But we have to realize that the meaning of "brain" is an organ, or center, where we find the functions of certain types of activities of the consciousness through the body. In 1996, Dr Michael D Gershon, the author of The Second Brain and the chairman of the department of anatomy and cell biology at Columbia, coined the term "second brain" which we call as the Emotional Brain. Here is an excerpt from a news article printed in New York Times:
NYT News Service By Harriet Brown TOI Aug 24, 2005

The second brain which is in the Gut region has the same tools as the first brain, a sophisticated nearly self-contained network of neural circuitry, neurotransmitters and proteins. The scientists who are studying brain-gut connections are finding new understandings of the way the second brain works, and the interactions between the two. The connection between the two can be unpleasantly clear. "Every time I call the National Institutes of Health to check on a grant proposal," Dr Gershon said, "I become painfully aware of the influence the brain has on the gut." In fact, anyone who has ever felt butterflies in the stomach before giving a speech, a gut feeling that flies in the face of fact or a bout of intestinal urgency the night before an examination has experienced the actions of the dual nervous

systems. The connection between the brains lies at the heart of many woes, physical and psychiatric. Ailments like anxiety, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers and Parkinsons disease manifest symptoms at the brain and the gut level. "The majority of patients with anxiety and depression will also have alterations of their GI function," said Dr Emeran Mayer, professor of medicine, physiology and psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles.

So we have to realize, as well, that we have the Emotional Brain, which is related with all of the terminations of all of the nerves, which are going exactly in the area of the heart and navel. All of this area is where we find our Emotional. So, when we feel any emotion, always we feel it in this area, never in the intellectual brain. Even the inner organs related with the digestive system that we have in this area are always affected when we have a strong emotion. But many thousands years ago, the ancient Yogis and spiritual scientists knew more. Apart from this second brain recently found by the scientists, they tell us about another brain as well. Accordingly and in fact, we have 3 Brains: First Brain: Thinking or Intellectual, in the head. Second Brain: Emotional, located in the solar plexus and sympathetic nervous centers. Third Brain: Motor, located in the spinal column.

Yes, we have a third brain, which is the Motor Brain, which is located in the medulla, which is that nerve matter that we have in the spinal column. You open the spinal column and you find 33 vertebrae. But there is a nerve matter, which is a type of yellow-reddish nerve matter, which unites the 33 vertebrae... This is related, of course, with the Motor Brain. If you hurt your spinal column, you cant walk, even if you have very strong legs, can you? So, when we talk about the three brains we have to state that the Motor Brain is in all the spinal medulla, the Emotional Brain is in the center which we call the solar plexus, and the Intellectual Brain is up there in our head. To understand the Three Brains better, we have to understand the Five Centers, which are not same but similar. Five marvelous psycho-physiological centers

The 5 Centers of the Human Machine

These five centers are:

1. 2. 3. 4.

The Intellectual The Emotional The Motor The Instinctive

5.

The Sexual

Each of these five centers penetrates the entire organism; nonetheless, if one self-observes profoundly, one becomes aware that each one of these centers has a central, basic point situated at a specific area of our organic machine, which we can call its center of gravity. And, each one of these centers of the human machine has absolutely defined specific functions

5 Centers

Center of Gravity

Functions The Center of Intellect:

First

The Intellectual Center

Situated in the Cerebrum - the head

Related to Thought, process of reasoning and the process of thinking, Analyzing, Logic, etc.

Second

The Emotional

Situated in the Solar Plexus

The Center of Emotions:

Center

the area between our Heart and Navel

Related to Feelings -- feelings of like and dislike, feelings of any sort of emotional quality joy or despair

The Center of Movement: Third The Motor Center Situated in the upper part of the spinal column, at the back of the Neck Related to Movement and habits: where we develop and acquire the abilities we have with our physical body

The Center of Instinct: Fourth The Instinctive Center Situated at the bottom of the back bone the Coccyx Related to our animal or automatic behaviors. This includes digestion, the instinct of self-preservation, the instinct to fight or to run

Fifth

The Sexual Center

Situated in the Sexual Glands the Genitals

The Center of Sex: Related to the sexual impulses that motivate the entire psyche, reproduction, store house of

energy for all the other centers

When we begin this process of learning about ourselves and comprehend how our psyche functions, it becomes evident that each one of these five centers moves at a different speed. Which center do you think is the fastest of them all? It is assumed in this modern world that the intellect is the most superior of these centers. It is assumed that the intellect is the fastest, that it has the most power, and is the best or most important part of us. But, actually, this is not so, and can be easily observed. The intellectual is the slowest of all the centers. When you begin to seriously self-observe and become mindful of your psyche from moment to moment, you will quickly encounter this fact. The emotional center is faster than intellect. The motor-instinctive center is faster than intellect. The sexual center is faster than intellect. All of these components of our psyche move at much greater speeds than our intellect. This can be shown in many examples. When you are driving your car, and someone leaps in front of you, who in your psyche acts first? Instinct, motor, emotion!!!

All of these arise well before you can even think about what has happened. Before any thought comes, you will have reacted instinctively, and felt that surge of emotion: fear or concern. Then, only afterward, will the thoughts come. Thus, in actual fact, we can see that the intellect is the slowest center. The Motor and Instinctive Centers are 30,000 times faster. Imagine you are crossing the main road. When you reach in the middle, you see a bike approaching you. And it comes very close. Now, two things can happen. If you just see the bike and start running towards the other end instinctively, you are saved, phew!! But sometimes, our dear intellectual center enters the picture. And it starts thinking instead of reacting. It says, should I let this bike cross or should I cross. So you take one foot forward and one backward. Seeing this the bike driver is also confused, whether you will run forward or backward. And ..screech. BAAM. So you see how Intellectual Center slows you down, while Instinctive and Motor Center would have landed you safely across the road!!!!!!! And we have been told that the Emotional Center is still faster than the Motor and Instinctive Centers. Great sages affirm that the Emotional Center is indeed 60,000 times faster than the Intellectual Center. When we have to give an exam, many times it happens that although we intellectually memorized everything many many times, yet when we enter the examination hall we just go blank. Or we have a stomach ache or indigestion, gas, acidity, diarrhea just before the exam.

Same happens if we have to give a speech in front of an audience. Or to face an interview board???? Why? The intellectual center memorized everything! Then what is the problem with the stomach?? The Emotional Center. That is the problemo. That is not in balance. The fear, anxiety make the emotional center go dancing like Michael Jackson. And why the mighty Intellectual Center as we think of it cannot tell the Emotional Center to just shut up? Intellectual Center says to the Emotional Center, hey I know everything, there is no problem, so just shut up. But the problem is that Emotional Center is 60,000 times faster than Intellectual Center. So even before the Intellectual Center understands what is happening, the Emotional Center has already taken over our whole psyche and blocked the Intellectual Center even further, resulting in our going blank in the examination hall, or on stage or in front of an interviewer. So you see, the Emotional Center is much faster than the intellect!!! And yet, clearly, the most rapid, the most potent center of all, is the Sexual. It is 90,000 times faster than the Intellectual Center. It is with good cause that Freud stated that sex is the center of gravity of the human mind. It is the central axis upon which our psyche functions. The very roots of existence are found within it. This is an undeniable fact. The center with the most potency, power, the most force, the greatest capacity to create an impulse, or a movement in a person, is the Sexual Center. It is the fastest and the deepest. That is why, it is the most difficult to control.

Watch yourself or other people on the road or in a party. If you are going in your vehicle or just walking, and you see a person wearing a feminine dress driving or walking ahead. The moment you pass that vehicle or person, what is your first reaction??? Yes, without thinking, you turn your head to look!!!

We all do it, even girls. Just the degree of refinement of how we look might be different. Somebody can be just rude or blatant, some of us are more discreet or suave. But the Sexual Center is so fast, phishuu Whom do we first notice on the street or in a party even if thousands of people are there? The opposite sex, of course.

If we are reading a newspaper, magazine or browsing the web, what is that which attracts our attention most quickly, in a flash??? The sex -- sexual images.

Of course, the advertisement industry knows it very well. Ever seen an advertisement which appeals to your intellect??? Even if you have, I bet that advertisement was taken off very quickly, because that company must have gone bankrupt. The advertisements, soap operas, movies they all appeal to you sexually or emotionally. Because instinctively and through years of their research, every advertising or business expert knows that the Emotional and Sexual Centers are much faster than the Intellect. Smart sales people know this fact that people buy emotionally and then justify their purchase intellectually. So any sales person who appeals to the Intellectual Center might just die of hunger.

Alright, lets talk more about the workings of the Motor Center
When we learn how to type, or we learn how to ride a bicycle, that is the process of training the motor center, and giving it that skill, which it then just repeats when needed. Reflect for a moment, initially when we are learning to ride a bike or drive a car, we intellectually memorize how to first press the clutch paddle, then put the first gear. Then press the accelerator while simultaneously releasing the clutch paddle. When the car reaches to 20 km/ph put it in second gear and so on. And your whole concentration is on the road. Even you put off the stereo. But now when you drive, do you even think about what to do. You are talking with a co-passenger and you do not even realize when you reach your destination. How is that possible? Because, the motor center learned to drive. Now there is no need for the intellectual center. On the contrary, if you reflect that if at any point of time while driving you start thinking about which gear is the car in, then you are in trouble.

Moreover, even the motor center remembers your exact route. Doesnt sometimes, while you are driving down your usual home-office route, intellectual center thinking or worrying about the happenings of the day or about what is going to happen, if you become conscious for a moment and ask yourself which road am I passing by, I bet you have to look out for a while to find out exactly where you are. But definitely, you are never on a wrong route. The motor center is following the route every day with utmost precision. This sometimes creates a minor problem. How? Think for a moment. How many times it happens that the previous day or just in the morning, your wife tells you that please while you go to office today, just do this or fetch this or deliver this, which entails your taking a slightly different route than usual. So your intellectual center listens and says, Yes Big Boss!! But when you reach your office, or just mid-way, it strikes to you that you just forgot to take that deviation from the normal route and you took the same old route and could not fulfill your wife s request. Why??? Your wife asks!! You are speechless. But interesting question, why?? Because, you did not instruct your motor center to take that alternate route. It is your motor center which drives, not the intellectual center. Next time when your wife asks you, remember this.

Another thing, if you observe yourself, you will see very carefully that most of the movements of the Instinctive Center are related with the lower part of our physical body. While waiting for an interview or at a clinic or in a line somewhere, many times we start shaking our leg one or both. Instinctive center getting impatient.

The 4 Types of People based on their Center of Gravity

Another interesting aspect related to the 5 Centers is that we usually have more affinity to one center than the other centers. Although, we all have all the centers, its just that we gravitate more towards one center. In this context, we can divide people in three groups:

1. 2. 3.

Intellectual types of people Emotional types of people Motor-Instinctive or Sexual types of people

These three groups are people that have certain psychological idiosyncrasies. The intellectual types of people see everything through the intellect, the emotion types see everything through the emotions, the motor-instinctive sexual types see everything through instinct, through habit, and through sex. Naturally, none of these types understand the others. So the people whose center of gravity is in the Intellectual Center, they are very slow in the way that they do everything. Even if they seem to be moving fast, they are actually doing everything with the slowest center, so they always need to think about everything, to analyze, to compare, to calculate...

If you are an emotional person... someone who has his center of gravity in the Emotional Center, you will be someone who is sentimental. Does not work with logic but with feelings, positive or negative, either hate or love. Intellectuals call them emotional fools. They do not calculate the profit or loss before doing anything. They do things to feel good. Then there are people whose center of gravity is in the Motor-Instinctive-Sexual centers. The macho types. The people who do everything instinctively. Fights at the drop of a hat. Never thinks of the consequences before acting. A marriage or friendship between an intellectual person and an emotional person will be challenged with constant arguments, misunderstandings, fighting, because they speak a different language and understand things a different way. If the husband is emotional and brings a Rose for the wife who is intellectual, she might ask, why did you waste ten bucks on a flower. Or if he buys an expensive gift, she will scream I could have bought the same dress for half the price in the Sales period, you spendthrift!! Same problemo if wife is emotional and husband is intellectual. And so on Of course, love can balance them and bring understanding. If only we learn how to develop our superior centers, these misunderstandings can be easily resolved and harmony restored.

The proper harmony is found only in the fourth type of person someone who has equilibrated his five centers.
This type of person has become conscious of these centers, and has ceased perceiving life through one center. They have acquired a degree of psychological equilibrium within which they are conscious of themselves, no longer going through life as an intellectual person, or an emotional person, or a motor-instinctual / sexual person. They have begun to awaken consciousness.

Moreover, there are two additional centers that get activated when we awaken our consciousness:

1. 2.

The Superior Intellectual Center related to the Crown The Superior Emotional Center related to the Heart

In earlier times these two centers were more active in the humanity. Look at the classic dances, they had refined movements and expressions related more to the motor center being used by Superior Emotional Center. Now a days, most dances have movements from the lower part of the body, related to the Instinctive and Sexual Centers. Or look at other art forms music, paintings, sculpture, theatre. Same phenomena can be observed there. The classic art had expressions related to the Superior Emotional Center and Superior Intellectual Center while the Modern Art forms are more expressions of the Lower Emotional Center, Instinctive Center and Sexual Center. In the current humanity, these two superior centers are totally closed. Only rarely we see somebody who has these centers opened. But we can open these centers through conscious practices that we will learn in the coming weeks.

Now, lets see how our use or misuse of the 3 Brains affects our health, quality and longevity of our life.
Within each one of our three brains the Lords of Karma deposit a determined quantity of Vital

Values. If one exhausts the vital values of the thinking brain, abusing the intellect, it is clear that the death of this brain is provoked, or one contracts nervous illnesses, neurasthenia, madness, schizophrenia, or one provokes the forms of madness or mania which persons who have exhausted the values of the intellectual centre have. If one exhausts the values of the emotional brain, one provokes illnesses of the heart, nervous and psychotic states, illnesses which are related with emotive or emotional aspects. Many artists exhaust the emotional brain and end up with particular psychopathic, emotional or cardiac conditions. They who exhaust the values of the motor brain finish up paralyzed, or with illnesses related with the muscles, the knees, the joints, paralysis, etc., damage to the spinal column. In general, all illness results from the misuse of these three brains. Not only this, if you observe your life, all stress and imbalance arise from the misuse of the 3 Brains. If one learns to manage the three brains in a balanced manner one saves the vital values which the Lords of Karma deposit, and life is prolonged. In Tibet, monasteries exist where the monks reach the age of 300 years or more because they harmoniously manage the three brains in a balanced manner, saving the vital values of the three brains. But in actual world, we either overuse a certain brain, or we do not at all activate certain brain. The result is imbalance, stress, irritation, disease and premature old age. Some people will only relate to a given situation through their intellect, and will rationalize and reason. Some will react through their emotional center and react in a way determined by their feelings.

Some will react automatically, habitually, instinctually. So we can see then that we have certain habits or tendencies in our psyche. Many of us are very intellectual in the way we relate to everything. We have to have good reasons, we need certain ideas in place before we can do something. Many of us are very emotional in the way we deal with life, we rely on how we feel about something, and are driven by the impulse of our emotion. Many of us are simply reactive - acting habitually, mechanically, without any thought. And this is why we see some people perform an action before they have really thought about it, or understood how they felt. Only later do they realize, "I should not have done that," or "That was a mistake." And think about it, do not over-think, just a little thinkalright, alrightthink a little about it, why in the first place we get stressed out. Either, we think, think, think, think till the Intellectual Brain values get depleted and we are seriously stressed out. If you have ever tried to resolve a problem through thinking, you very well know what am I saying here. Or we feel angry, or revengeful or fearful or hateful or anxious till our stomach goes phoosh or our heart goes bangStress through over and negative use of the Emotional Brain. Or we keep impatiently or instinctively doing things throughout the day, thus, overusing and mis-using the Motor Brain and we end up in the bed splash. So how should we balance the 3 Brains to live in harmony? The trick is to use the 3 brains in a balanced way in a given day.

In general, we should be activating all the 3 Brains 1/3 rd part of the day in a given day to use them in a balanced way. When one observes that they have overused the thinking brain by reading too much or thinking too much, one must activate the motor brain or the emotional brain. How? By going for a walk, jogging or for a session of soccer, badminton or cricket. Or listening to some peaceful music or going to a park, etc. If one has overused the motor brain too much, one should activate the emotional brain by listening to relaxing music. If one feels imbalance in the emotional center because of overuse by harboring too much negative emotions anxiety, etc., one should activate the motor brain. This has already been proven in scientific studies too. That emotionally unstable people have been benefited by doing some sort of physical exercises, jogging or trekking. Out of the three, the emotional brain is the most difficult to balance. If you have ever tried to control your anger, you know what I am talking about. Emotions are very powerful. The emotional brain has been equated with a mad elephant in ancient India. And in ancient India, they had one easy trick to treat a mad elephant. They would put the mad elephant between two sane elephants and that would heal the mad elephant. Same trick applies to an unbalanced Emotional Brain. Just relax and balance the Intellectual Brain and the Motor Brain and these two sane elephants can then balance the Emotional Brain. Another way is to activate the Superior Emotional Center, the heart. This can be developed by feeding the Emotional Brain positively and minimizing or totally stopping its negative feeding.

Feedings for the Emotional Center

POSITIVE - Gains

NEGATIVE - Losses

Inspirational movies, e.g. Disney Pictures animation movies, etc. Listening to Classical music Meditation Being with nature Playing with children Expressing superior emotions of Love, happiness, peace, etc.

Watching Soap operas on TV Modern CinemaBollywood/Hollywood Listening to sentimental songs, heavy metal music, etc. Gossiping, Being Critical of others, Sarcasm Expressing or harboring negative emotions like hatred, resentments, self pity, anxiety, etc.

Activating the Superior Emotional Center and the Superior Intellectual Center is very important to balance the whole of the human machine. One who is centered only in the intellect can only come out of it by activating the Emotional Superior doing activities on the positive side of the above chart. And activating the Superior Intellectual by reading positive books, by regular Meditation, and by developing objective reasoning. We will talk more about these in the coming weeks. Same applies to a person whose center of gravity is only emotions or instinct.

The specific functions of each center indicate, point to, certain dualisms in each center "For and against," or "yes and no."
Even if you observe your mind for a few moments, is this not what is happening there all the time? And if you look closely, you will see the battle happening in 5 levels.

The intellect develops ideas: with its incessant battles of thesis and antithesis. Ideas for and ideas against. The dualism of emotions, splitting them into pleasant and unpleasant emotions. The dualism of instinctive sensations, splitting them into pleasure and pain. The dualism of sexuality, splitting them into attraction and repulsion. The dualism of motor, splitting them into action and inaction.

Without a doubt, each one of the five centers, registers both positive and negative energies. But they are in themselves simply machines. Each center is simple a transformer. Each one simply takes given energies, transforms them, and transmits the result. So, it is important for us to take pause and observe ourselves, to study our mind. We have to know and see and understand how impulses arise in our mind. Where do our thoughts come from? Why do we think the things that we do? Are these thoughts our own thoughts, or are they someone elses?

The same is true of our emotions: what emotions arise in us from moment to moment, day to day? Why? What stimulates them? What are the energies, the influences that are affecting our emotional center? And how are we transforming those influences? And how in turn, are we transmitting emotional energy out of ourselves? By observing and analyzing constantly, consciously, from moment to moment, these five centers, we can start to grasp something of our true state, and our true purpose. It is a good practice for us to become aware of how we use these centers during the day. We may discover that we have never even felt what the emotional center is. This is becoming very prevalent in these times. Many people do not feel anything. They only feel themselves in the intellect. And some are the opposite - some refuse to use the intellect. Instead, they want to go through life on an entirely emotional basis. And some only want to go through life according to instinct, just fulfilling desires, never thinking about it, never concerned with their emotions. And these people become totally morally bankrupt. They live their lives like animals, driven by one instinct, then the next. The important thing is to become aware of our own level of consciousness. If we persist in existing at that level of consciousness, behaving according to that level, the result will be only what can be produced there: more enslavement to desire, more enslavement to sensation, and more karma. More suffering. No change! No improvement!!! No gain. Only our old pains. So why do not we this week, try as many times as we remember, to observe how are our 5 Centers in that given moment of observation. Are they balanced or some center is stressed? How do we observe?

Simply, be aware of the area around the center of gravity of that particular center. e.g. if you want to observe your emotional center, just feel the solar plexus area the area between your heart and navel. For motor, the neck area. Like that, observe all the centers. If you find some tension, stress at any particular point relax that area mentally. If you find overusing some center, change gears to another center. Just try it. You will be amazed at the difference this simple thing can do to the quality of the life you are living.

you help at your end? Mrs.Lakshmi Viswanathan (Student): Sir, The audio clip showing the progressive relaxation of the body is of 8.22 mts duration. If you can add 3 more minutes of Natural Sounds like the chirping of birds, flowing of the stream etc . to this it will enhance the usefulness of the whole, I think. Parmanand Singh (Student): Thanks for such a nice illustration on the 5 centres in our body and method for balancing them. very useful topic. Parmanand Singh (Student): The three brain Centres are really an eye opener. Although this was experienced by me so many times but was knowing the reason for that. Now it is clearly understood why there was some whirling action in the stomach while handling some situation. Parmanand Singh(Student) Monika Jain (Professor): Dear David, Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. Yes, if we consciously feed our centers positively, we would remain healthy most of the times. We bless you with good health and harmony always. With love and peace Neeraj Ghai (Professor): Dear Neera, one reason youre not able to relax totally could be that during your day-to-day routine, may be youre taking too much stress yourself which could be leading to huge imbalance in your centers. If you develop a habit to observe and relax your 5 centers at regular intervals during the day, youll be less stressed out by the end of the day and will relax totally even by doing progressive relaxation once. Also, when you realize that you have been over using any one brain, switch to another brain for some time. Try these two simple techniques and let us know the results. Peace, Neeraj Neera Tandan (Student): This course is awesome and I'm glad I found it. In todays world we are constantly rushing around trying to fit everything we can in our hectic schedules and burning oursleves out in the process. It is wonderful to do the relaxation exercise although I find it a bit difficult to relax totally. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge with us.
