Community Experience
As Spanish II students you should feel more comfortable with your Spanish-speaking abilities. You should also be more aware of the culture and be able to see how Spanish fits in the society right outside your front door. There are currently 50 million Hispanics in the United States (which is 16% of the total population). In Indiana, we have been blessed with almost 400,000 Hispanics, and they make up 6% of Indianas residents. (U.S. Census, 2010) How amazing is it that we have been able to see the mix of American freedom and the unique Hispanic culture right in our own communities? The Indiana State Standards of World Languages, which is what students in a Spanish class are expected to be able to achieve, includes a component that is worthy of exploring. Standard 8 states that students should, within their communities, become active global citizens by experiencing languages and cultures in multiple settings. Therefore, for this portfolio I am asking each of you to think about how the Spanish language and Hispanic culture play out in your home, your neighborhood, your town, and/or in Indiana. After reflecting on this, you will be asked to TAKE PART in this phenomenon in some way.

As stated by the IN Department of Education, learners will be expected to use their knowledge of the target language and cultures both within and beyond the school setting for personal enrichment and civic engagement. The specifics of the standards are the following:

Standard 8
8.1 Share experiences from the world language classroom with others. Examples: Use the target language to teach basic vocabulary to friends and family, make simple presentations to family or friends using the target language 8.2 Recognize and show the influences of the target language and/or cultures on the community. Example: Architecture, special events, stores and shops, careers using the target language, etc. 8.3 Show evidence of becoming a life-long learner by using the target language and cultural knowledge for personal enrichment. Examples: Watch movies in the target language, listen to songs in the target language, join a club, establish e-pal or pen pal connections with native speakers, travel abroad 8.4 Research and present about a local and/or global need that is identified as authentic by the cultures of the target language. Project Requirements:
It is expected that each student will spend a minimum of 2 hours with his or her chosen activity. Then the student will spend another 1-2 hours thereafter to reflect on and write about the experience. To obtain the maximum points for this assignment, students can do one of the following: Refer to examples stated in the above sub-standards Watch 1-2 authentic Spanish films (with written parental approval for anything above a PGrating; international non-rated films will not be accepted) Visit a Hispanic grocery store Teach someone something you have learned from this class by using originally created materials Visit a Spanish-speaking country (I dont expect you to do this unless you already have a tripped planned as some of you have communicated to me) If you already speak Spanish you can take advantage of several opportunities to interpret for family members and/or friends Attend a Hispanic Festival or a quinceera If you live in an area with a large Hispanic population there are several opportunities in the community where you can volunteer at specific organizations and events (a list of these can be provided on request) Research and listen to different types of Spanish music You may also propose an idea for my review!

So, what do you turn in?

It is expected that you will turn in a written paper or presentation explaining the activity that you took part in, what you learned, how it related to this course, and how it impacted you. These are to be done digitally with the program of your choice. I hope you will vividly illustrate your experience through images and details. You will turn in 4 separate submissions for this assignment: Deadline 1: Idea (5 points) o You will turn in a Word document answering the following questions in 2-3 sentences. What will you be doing for your project? Why did you choose this activity? What help, if any, do you need from me as you prepare? Deadline 2: Outline (5 points) o You will turn in a Word document with a detailed outline of your plans Title Introduction including why you have chosen this activity Description (this should take several paragraphs/slides) What did you do? Who did you do it with or did you do it alone? Where did you go? What was the experience like? Details, details, and more details. Connections How did this project relate to the course? How does this activity count as classwork? Why would I have had you do this assignment to meet Standard 8? What did you learn about yourself from this experience in regards to your language and cultural learning?

What connections could you make from this experience back to the course and vice versa? Impact What did you like about this project? What did you dislike? What did you learn? How do you feel? Has this experience changed the way you look or feel about Spanish culture and language? Will you do anything differently now? Is this something you would do again? Conclusion revisiting the main points of your experience Deadline 3: Rough Draft (5 points) o Compile a rough version of your final product. Use complete sentences, correct grammar, and prepare your project for submission. Add pictures and begin designing your document or presentation. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SUBMIT YOUR FINAL DRAFT UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED FEEDBACK FROM ME ON YOUR ROUGH DRAFT. Your final draft will not be read and your grade will be reset if it is submitted before I have returned your rough draft with comments. Deadline 4: Final Draft (25 points) o Do not submit the final draft until you have received and reviewed my feedback on your rough draft. Make any necessary changes and additions according to my comments and your own reflection. Double check your grammar. Have a friend or relative edit your project.

*Deadlines 1-3 will be graded on effort and completion. *Please see the rubric on the next page for specific grading criteria for Deadline 4.
