Ch. 17 1. Discuss why Davids Oath of the Horatii is considered to be a severely classical painting by a most truly Neoclassical artist. Be sure to explain Neoclassicism (including style and technique) and discuss the goals and concerns and how they are realized in the painting. 2. What made the Raft of the Medusa so controversial? What characteristics distinguish the four artistic styles that prevailed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries from each other (that is, from Rococo to Realism)? Choose one Post-Impressionist artist and artwork and explain how the artist was influenced by Impressionism (give examples identified by title and artist) but also discuss how your artist differs (style, content, etc.) and explain why.

Ch. 19

Consider the Surrealist paintings of Salvador Dali. How does he both use traditional conventions and break from them in order to convey his visual goals? How do his paintings communicate Surrealist interests? Choose at least one image to analyze and point to while answering these questions (discuss style and technique).

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe used the axiom, less is more. Explain the meaning of this saying and, using examples, describe how the Bauhaus made use of this as a principle. How do the convictions of modern architects differ from traditional design principles?

Many artists from the 20th century embraced Modernism: a concept in art that abandons traditional conventions of making pictures and instead focuses on the formal components of composition: line, color, shape, etc., which become the true subject matter rather than a narrative interpreted from representational images. Choose one artist from chapter 19 whose work reflects these Modernist ideals. What did they intend to achieve with their work(s)? How did they go about accomplishing these goals? Why? Discuss style, technique, process, etc.
