PORJECT TOPIC PROPOSAL BY MAWAI MAGO YABO (MSC/ENG/5667/2011-2012) USE OF WASTE TIRE RUBBER AS PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF COARSE AGGREGATE

IN CONCRETE. Currently, waste materials resulting from various physical and chemical processes are the most important challenge in the industrial and developing countries. Excessive investigations on wastage recycling are being conducted and implemented to minimize the environmental damages. Little or nothing has been done with regard to waste recycling in Nigeria while the effects of these waste is very eminent in our environment. Government have sunk in much in order to rescue situations whenever environmental pollution occurs but have done little in terms of preventing this environmental pollution from occurring. One of the non-recyclable materials that affect the environment is automotive used tires. Waste-Tire rubber is one of the significant environmental problems worldwide. With the increase in the automobile production, huge amounts of waste tire need to be disposed. Due to the rapid depletion of available sites for waste disposal, many countries banned the disposal of waste tire rubber in landfills. Research had been in progress for long time to find alternatives to the waste tire disposal. Among these alternatives is the recycling of waste-tire rubber. Recycled waste tire rubber is a promising material in the construction industry due to its light weight, elasticity, energy absorption, sound and heat insulating properties. Investigation shows that used tires are composed of material which do not decompose under environmental conditions and cause serious contaminations. Burning has been the choice for decomposition but the gases exhausted from the tire burning results in harmful pollutions. Another way to which these tires can be disposed is through their usage in concrete known as crumb rubber concrete (CRC). In some countries, much work has been performed in that regard and it has been proven that inclusion of tire to the composition of concrete will improve some of its mechanical and dynamical properties as energy absorption, ductility and resistance to cracking is improved. Concrete laboratory test to be conducted on CRC may include compressive, flexural, indirect tensile strength, thermal coefficient of expansion and microscopic matrix analysis. However, decrease in compressive strength might be witnessed in concrete containing rubber. Recycled waste tire rubber will be used to replace fine and coarse aggregate in different percentages by weight and the properties of the concrete will be observed. Test to be carried out on the concrete include compressive strength test and others, Challenges envisaged include the shredding of the tire rubber into crumbs and the equipment that will be needed to perform the various test on the concrete.
