Students will relate the story to their personal lives as they write about their best friends. These activities will test students abilities in reading comprehension. Select Media, Materials, and Methods All media and materials needed for the lesson are listed, and are lesson appropriate. Wallaces Lists by Barbara Bottner Smart Board or overhead-projector for class discussion and brainstorming 5 computers with Kidspirational Software (computers have worksheet made so students may type information into appropriate spaces. Journal worksheet made from Kidspiration Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods Wallaces Lists The book will be read aloud to the class at the beginning of the lesson. Smart board/Over-head projector This will be used to review the main events that took place in the story. It will also be used to demonstrate how to complete the Kidspiration activity.

Computers Students will be paired off, and will complete the Compare/Contrast Kidspiration activity together. Journal Worksheet Students will write about their best friends and compare/contrast themselves with their friends. Require Learner Participation

Introduction: Introduce the idea of compare/contrast to the class. Discuss opposites in personalities. Read the story aloud to the class. Using smart board, complete a story map of the main events as a class. Begin to brainstorm ideas of how to describe characters.

Activity: Divide the class into 2 groups. Have the first group start the journal worksheet, while the other group does the Kidspiration project on the computers. Journal Worksheet This activity will strengthen students writing skills as well as their ability to relate lessons to their lives. Students will describe ion detail their best friends. Then, they will compare themselves to their best friends. They will discuss how they are like their friends and how they are different from their friends. Kidspiration project The second group will be split up into pairs. Each pair will work at one computer. The computer will already have a worksheet loaded on Kidspiration. The students who speak English as a second language will be paired with students who are successful in the classroom. The students will work together to fill in the blanks in describing how Wallace and Albert are alike and how Wallace and Albert are different. This activity will strengthen their reading comprehension as well as their abilities to compare/contrast characters. Wrap-up The students will share their Kidspiration story maps with the rest of the class via the smartboard. Prizes will be awarded to most original story map and most detailed story map. 5 minute review Reinforce what the students should have learned from the lesson.

Evaluate & Revise Student Performance Students will be evaluated on how well they worked with their peers in the Kidspirational project. The teacher will float around the room and observe how they work in their pairs. This will also be seen in their presentation of their story map. Story maps will be graded on their accuracy in identifying likes/dislikes among main characters in the story. Journals will be graded on completion, grammar/spelling, and content. Students should have at least two likes/dislikes mentioned in comparing themselves with their friends. Media Effectiveness Was the smart board useful in promoting class discussion? Did it prove useful for visual learners? Did the Kidspiration activity work well amongst the class? Was it easy to use? Was it helpful for kinesthetic learners? Was the journal worksheet helpful in focusing student responses?

Instructor Performance Did the lesson run smoothly? Was it well-planned? Did the class respond well to the lesson? Were the learning objectives achieved? Could the lesson be improved in the future?
