Use the hand out to provide practice.

Cultural Information :

What does "pop goes the weasel" mean? --Birdaire, via AOL Dear Birdaire: Who knows? It's basically a folk song and nursery rhyme that later saw service as a music-hall ditty. It's tough enough deciphering rock lyrics written in 1975; what do you expect with a tune going back to the 17th century? But Straight Dope curator of music Tom Miller said he'd give it his best shot. Tom collected two dozen versions of "Pop Goes the Weasel" from both sides of the Atlantic. Many were similar, with one key difference: in North America, the opening line was generally "all around the mulberry bush," possibly due to conflation with the similar tune "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush." In the UK, however, it was usually "all around the cobbler's bench." This gives us a better idea of the song's original meaning. Most authorities think "Pop Goes the Weasel" describes the acts of weaving, spinning, and sewing. A weasel, Tom reports, was a mechanism used by tailors, cobblers, and hatters that "popped" when the spool was full of thread. Some argue that to pop the weasel is also cockney slang meaning to pawn one's coat. This makes sense in light of the second verse of the kids' version: "A penny for a spool of thread / A penny for a needle / That's the way the money goes," etc. A version popular in 19th-century English music halls makes things even clearer: "Up and down the City Road / In and out the Eagle / That's the way the money goes," etc. The Eagle in question was a London tavern; clearly the lyricist was describing the consequences of spending too little time at the cobbler's bench and too much on a barstool.

The kids should go over the song and the teacher can teach the alphabet. The cards provided here can be photocopied in color paper and plastified for you to create your teaching alphabet material to use in the classroom. After playing the song and practicing with the Alphabet, the kids can play the following game. This activity was taken from the book: Whats in the cards from David Harrington, Hisako Tahara and Alastair Graham- Marr.

Arrange students into groups of up to seven or eight. Choose one student to be the first air writer. Place a thoroughly shuffled half deck of upper-case or lower-case letters face down in front of the air writer. The air writer randomly chooses on e letter from the deck of cards. The air writer then tries to write this letter in the air in a large manner, using his or her finger or a prop such as a pointer. Other students try to guess what letter the student is writing. The student who guesses correctly becomes the next air writer.

The song is ideal to teach Greetings. It provides the real life situation, when someone finds a person on the street and greets nicely. It also has some expressions to make a short informal conversation. The kids can prepare the setting with cardboard. They can decorate the classroom with trees, the sun the flowers the bluebird! , then you play explain the meaning of the song, give the kids the pronunciation and vocabulary using the decorations around the room for the kids to understand the meaning. The song can be used with the Total Physical Response method!. Teacher can mime the actions for the kids and then the kids can follow . It is important to explain that not all the words have a meaning like the Zip a dee doo-dah, zip a dee ay.

The song is ideal to provide the kids with practice to memorize the parts of the body. First you introduce the vocabulary for the body and then you explain the lyrics of the song. The kids stand up in a circle. Ask them to follow your movements as they sing. First they just follow you and you sing and mime for them. Then they sing with you by doing the actions. Then they sing and dance while you watch them follow the tape. This is the ideal Total Physical Response activity to use with the kids.
