By: Sara Hojjatie and Pardis: TNG Editor Albert Abedi Staff Writer On Tuesday, June 18, 2013 Iranians worldwide cheered for the success of the Iranian national soccer team as they defeated South Korea 1-0. As the FIFA World Cup is normally dominated by top-ranked teams from Europe and South America, the Team Melli of Iran is fortunate enough to be one of the Asian nations travelling to Brazil in 2014. Iran's Journey to the World Cup through the Years

success was their successive victories in the last three games, the first with Qatar, second with Lebanon, and finally with South Korea, an extremely difficult feat. The goal by Irans team was made by the twenty-five year-old Iranian-Dutch player Reza Ghoochannejhad. This is the fourth time in history that Irans team is going to the World Cup, previously having qualified in 1978, 1998, and 2006. It is interesting to observe Irans experience in previous World Cups, and hopefully 2014 will bring positive statistics to include in the national teams record.

QUALIFIER: Iran vs. South Korea: WIN 1-0 The negativity towards Irans team from the South Koran coach increased the hype of this game. Rather than shaking his hand after the game, the Iranian coach is said to be giving a look insinuating, we kicked their butts.

Iran vs. Netherlands: LOSS 0-3 Iran vs. Scotland: DRAW 1-1 Iran vs. Peru: LOSS 1-4 This was Irans first and last World Cup under the Shah, since the revolution happened the year after. Argentina won this world cup, beating the Netherlands 3-1 in the finals.

2006 FIFA in Germany

Iran vs. Mexico: LOSS 1-3 Iran vs. Portugal: LOSS 0-2 Iran vs. Angola: DRAW 1-1 Iran was the first country to qualify for the 2006 World Cup on June 8, 2005. The Iran vs. Japan game at Azadi Stadium was the highest

attended qualifying match among all confederations; after the match, 5 fans were killed and many others injured, a result of the chaos from the celebrations. Team Melli had its highest ever ranking in this World Cup, at 15 in the world. Italy went on to win the title, defeating France 5-3.

Iran vs. Yugoslavia: LOSS 0-1 Iran vs. USA: WIN 2-1 Iran and the United States being in the same group for this World Cup caused the world to expect a politically charged match, but players from both

teams played fairly and treated one another amicably. Iranians presented Americans with flowers and a giant commemorative silver platter. They also took commemorative pictures, as seen above. (US team in white). France won the cup, taking out Brazil 3-0.

An Inside Look at the Life of Googoosh: Iran's Timeless Diva

By: Kamran Partovi Staff Writer On May 5, 1950, a baby girl named Faegheh Atashin was born in Tehran, Iran. At the early age of 3, when most children her age could not even read or write she was already commanding the stage. This young girl would one day be known worldwide as Googoosh, arguably the most legendary diva in Iranian pop music history. She captivated an entire people before and after a long hiatus and yet she is still continuing to charm Iranians worldwide today. Googooshs parents were originally Azerbaijani immigrants from the USSR. Even from an early age, the stage was Googooshs home. Her father, Saber Atashin, was an entertainer and acrobat who discovered Googooshs talent at an early age. He took her on the road to perform with him and she would do impersonations of the famous Iranian singers of the time while performing acrobatic acts. Googooshs incredible rise to fame was only enhanced by her impeccable sense of style and fashion in addition to the help of Irans best songwriters and lyricists, such as Hassan Shamaizadeh and Shahryar Ghanbari. Googoosh became a trendsetting icon that was a household name in Iran. It was said that the day after Googoosh cut her long hair in favor of a pixie hairdo likely inspired by Mia Farrow, Iranian women all over the country followed suit by adopting the same hairstyle, known thereafter as the Googooshi. She not only sang but also had a widely successful acting career, starring in over 25 movies such as Bita. She acted alongside stars such as the legendary Behrouz Vossoughi, to whom Googoosh was briefly married. What made Googoosh especially unique in comparison to many other pop stars of her time was her decision to remain in Iran following the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Unfortunately, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini decreed female singers to be temptresses and henceforth they were banned from performing. She was placed under house arrest and for 20 years she was unable to continue her career. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the Iranian government granted her a passport and allowed her to leave the country under the presidency of Mohammad Khatami. Googooshs long silence, as it turned out, had accomplished nothing but intensified the Iranian peoples reverence of her. In 2000, Googoosh commenced a monumental international comeback tour with a sold out concert at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. This tour ended with two major concerts held in Dubai, for which many Iranians traveled across the gulf to see what was rumored to be her final performance before returning once again to Iran. However, Googoosh did not return to Iran, and has since released several acclaimed albums in addition to performing several widely successful tours. Googooshs resilience, fame, and image have often caused her to be called the Madonna of Iran. Indeed, she was an avant-garde fashion and pop icon who made a huge impact on the face of Iranian pop music. Not only was she famous in Iran, but she also had a huge following in other countries in the region. In fact, the musical number at the end of the recent Snow White film Mirror Mirror was inspired by director Tarsem Singhs childhood memories of dancing to Googooshs popular cover of the English song I Believe in Love when he was growing up in the Punjab region of India. Googoosh has also brought the exciting music completion reality show concept to the Iranian community worldwide with her show, Googoosh Music Academy, which is broadcasted by the London-based Manoto 1 network since 2010. It is indeed remarkable that after a 60-year long career interrupted by 20 years of forced silence, Googoosh has been such an influential and inspirational figure in the Iranian community. At some point many artists choose to end their careers to preserve a reasonably consistent image, but Googoosh is definitely still going strong and will continue to allure the Iranian community for years to come.
