Teaches Guide:

Topic Area: Light and Sound Number of lessons and lesson duration Lesson 1 Light sources 7 lessons of 45 mins. - 1 hour

Activities Children draw arrows on a diagram showing where they think light comes from so allowing us to see. Ensure they understand that light enters our eye. Children sort into 3 categories: not light sources, man- made sources and natural sources of light. Cut out and stick. They look at Powerpoint Odd one out and discuss in pairs. Introduce the term source of light. They look at Powerpoint Natural and Man made. Children work out which are man made and which are natural. The children list 5 sources of man made light that didnt exist 100 years ago.

Lesson 2 Light cannot pass through materials. How shadows are formed.

Activities Making shadows activity in pairs. They use correct vocabulary to describe what theyve done and the impact it has had on the shadow. Play Light and Shadows activity and quiz on BBC science clips.

Lesson 3

Reflection of light from surfaces

Activities Explain the word reflection. Place a number of objects on the table. Children have to sort the objects together. They have to decide how to sort them. Then they explain to the class their categories and choices. Focus on whether the objects reflect light or not. This leads to a paired discussion

Lesson 4 Understanding of light.

Activities Children create a poster/booklet or design investigations for other children to do to show their understanding of light and the topics covered in class so far. Give list of vocabulary they need to include on the poster or in their booklet or investigation

Lesson 5 Vibrations what are they?

Activities Look at Experimenting with vibrations sheet. Children to do each activity and describe what they notice. Use the activities above to explain how sounds are made and how we cannot always see vibrations and how vibrations need to travel to reach the ear.

Lesson 6 and 7 What is pitch and how they can change the pitch of a sound.
