Gas Turbine Power Station Located near the Indraprastha Metro Station, this power plant was commissioned

in 1986 as a Gas Turbine Plant. Keeping in mind the high electricity costs, they installed steam turbines as well. At present, it houses 3 modules, each module consisting of 2 gas turbines and a steam turbine each of a theoretical capacity of about 30 MW. Hence, the total capacity of this plant is 270 MW. As mentioned earlier, it works on the principle of CCGT . The operating fluid can either be high speed diesel, naptha (not used recently due to its extreme combustible nature which can be difficult to handle) or natural gas, depending upon the availability. The water supply is ensured from the Yamuna, which is treated with PTP and ETP clarifiers so that we have demineralised water (DM water) to run the plant. The gas and steam turbines are manufactured by Alstom and installed by BHEL. The speciality of this plant is that, under the event of a gridlock, like the one hit North India in the previous year, this plant will not be affected as it houses Diesel generator for its initial start-up. The compressor, a 17 stage axial flow, is employed. It is similar to axial flow turbine with a succession of moving blades on the rotor and fixed blades arranged around the stator. Air flows axially through the moving and fixed blades with diffuser passages, throughout which continuously increase the pressure and decrease the velocity. Stationary guide vanes are provided at entry to the first row of moving blades. The work input to the rotor shaft is transferred by the moving blades to the air thus accelerating it. The spaces between the blades as well as the stator blades from diffusing passages decrease the velocity and increase the pressure. An equal temperature rise is maintained and the axial velocity is kept constant throughout the compressor. The axial flow compressor blades are now made of titanium alloy which are of low density, possess good strength at high temperature and are strongly resistant to corrosion. Light weight, good creep strength, and fatigue resistance are attractive features of titanium alloy. The air enters the compressor at ambient conditions of atmosphere, about 25C and 1 kg of pressure and leaves to combustion chamber at about 360 C and 10 kg pressure The turbine is an axial flow turbine of Frame 6. The turbine then rotates through 5100 RPM which is brought to 3000 RPM to run the generator (also at 3000 RPM). by a load gear box located at the end of turbine housing. The generator is commissioned into service by an exciter which is used to produce flux so that the turbine shaft can cut through it. This is due to the reason that India operates on 50 Hz of supply which equates to about 3000 RPM.
