Hamilton student takes first in international DECA competition

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
A first in Hamilton High Schools 11 years of DECA competitions, class of 2013 graduate Alan A.J. Mamerow took home the top trophy at the international level this past spring. The 18-year-old Colgate resident, son of Jeff and Penny P.K. Mamerow, competed against 160 other students in the category of Automotive Services at the 67th Annual DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif. He earned a berth at the international competition by taking first place at district level in Kettle Moraine in January and then at the state competitionwhich included more than 1,000 other studentsin Lake Geneva in March. Its a really big deal, said DECA advisor and Hamilton business and marketing educator Skip Hay. A.J. was the first-ever first place finisher from Hamilton; weve only ever had as high as a third place finish. Mamerow, who has been a member of DECAa school business club for students seeking careers in marketing, management, hospitality and financefor his entire four years of high school, has been involved in the competitions for the past three years, reaching a higher level each time. I only competed at the district level my first year, then the following year I advanced to state, and this year I made it to internationals, he said. Mamerow and Hay were among 16,000 DECA members from 50 states (plus Canada, China, Germany and Mexico) who attended the conference in Anaheim, and the competition was tough, said Hay. You have to take lots of tests ahead of time and then do role-playing at the competition, he said. You have to come up with ways to solve problems (in the business world), whether it be with a boss, a disgruntled employee or a customer. The hardest part, Mamerow said, was having just 10 minutes to prep for each role play before presenting it before a judge, and not having any idea what it was going to be about going into the day. It was challenging, but enjoyable, the teen noted. Overall, the competitions were very fun, he said. Once some of the

Dear Dr. Winter, How can I protect my child's teeth? The best way to answer that question is to first discuss when should my child see a dentist? The best way to prevent oral health problems is to take your child to a dentist regularly. After your child's first dental visit-which should occur about six months after your child's first tooth erupts or by the child's second birthday-he or she should see the dentist every six months. Early visits will help familiarize your child with the dental office, reducing anxiety and making future visits less stressful. In addition to examining the development of your child's mouth, the dentist can teach you how to ensure good oral health and recommend special preventive care if necessary. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children, and unfortunately, children who develop cavities in their baby teeth are more likely to develop cavities in their permanent teeth, as well. Protect your child from tooth decay and other oral health issues by taking steps to care for your child's teeth throughout his or her childhood. The next question is how to protect your child from tooth decay. Prolonged exposure to sugar-containing liquids can cause tooth decay in children,so limit your child's consumption of sugary beverages like soda or fruit juices. If you give your child a sippy cup for long periods of time, fill it only with water. Children should learn to drink from a regular cup as early as possible so that liquid is less likely to collect around teeth that way. Also try to limit your child's consumption of sugary or starchy snacks, especially those that can remain stuck on the teeth after eating. As a parent, you should care for your child's oral hygiene until the child is old enough to take responsibility for their daily routine of brushing AND flossing.. Make sure your child brushes for two minutes at least twice a day using a pea sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste. Before age two you can clean your child's gums with a damp cloth and brush with water. Flossing should begin as soon as your child has two teeth that touch each other. Make sure your child gets fluoridated water whether it's bottled or from the tap. Lastly. The best advise we can give you is to lead by example. Brushing and flossing your teeth with your child will teach him or her to understand the importance of good habits and good oral hygiene. Dear Dr. Winter, how do I decide if it's better to have a root canal and crown lengthening or just pull it and place an implant? Great question! Your dentist will look at the remaining tooth structure, length of the root and condition of your adjacent teeth and give you the pro's and cons of each option.

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Generally speaking if a tooth can be saved for a minimum of 5 years that treatment may be acceptable. So if there is a long root left and the gum tissue is healthy, a root canal procedure and judicious crown lengthening may be a great choice. If the prognosis is poor and it is difficult to get at least 4 mm of clean tooth to cement a crown to with at least 2 mm of additional root that the gum tissue can adhere to ( we call this biologic width) then the tooth should be removed, socket grafting should be performed and an implant placed. We are happy to do a complimentary consultation to go over your specific situation or that of our readers. We invite our readers to come in for a complimentary consultation or a new patient comprehensive examination and x-ray visit. Please call our office at 414-464-9021 to schedule and let them know you contacted me via the internet for a special consideration. actually double-qualified for the event by taking fifth place for writing a business plan to open his own cabinet shopas a remarkable young man who is very focused, and said the teens victory was huge. I know other advisors who have been doing this for 30 years and have never taken home first place, he said. Hay added that one of his fellow advisors once took 24 students to the international competition and vowed that if one of them were to win, the teacher would get a tattoo. Now the kids are asking me if I will get a tattoo, he said with a laugh. As for Mamerows future, plenty of hands-on activities and projects top the list. I enjoy working in the wood shop at school and I find that making projects and designs is a big stress-reliever for me, he said. For the past two summers, I have worked at a local landscaping business, and this summer I have been hired as an assistant groundskeeper at Hamilton High School. He added, Much of my free time in summer involves mowing lawn, splitting wood, or doing other work around the house. Mamerow will major in technology education with a business minor at UW-Stout this fall, and he hopes to make his business plan a reality in the not-too-distant future. I plan to become a (technical education) teacher, and hope to someday open my own woodworking/cabinetmaking business, he said.

Warhawk Band Boosters Golf Outing set for Aug. 26

The Germantown High School Warhawk Band Boosters will host its 11th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 26, at Scenic View Country Club, 4415 Club Drive, Slinger. Sign-in for the popular community event begins at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start following at 11 a.m. Golfers of all ability levels will play 18 holes in a scramble format and enjoy lunch during their round. At 4:30 p.m., participants will gather at the clubhouse for dinner, an awards presentation, raffles, and a performance by the Germantown High School Wall of Sound marching band. Golf, lunch, dinner, drink tickets and entertainment are included in the $80 fee; however, an option to attend the evening dinner and entertainment portion only is available for $25. The registration deadline is Aug. 12. The event is one of the organization's primary fundraising activities, garnering much of the financial support needed to run the high school's band programs for the upcoming year. Funds raised are used to purchase uniforms, equipment, instruments and lockers, as well as provide student musician scholarships to band and leadership camps. To register for the event, become a sponsor or donate items for the raffle, contact Tom Hohl at (262) 502-1432 or tom@starjobs.us, or visit the band program's website at www.gtownbands.com/golf-outing. All prize donations are tax deductible.

Wine tasting at Odyssey Family Restaurant in Menomonee Falls July 13

Odyssey Family Restaurantlocated at N82 W15380 Appleton Avenue in Menomonee Fallsinvites the community to its inaugural wine tasting event set for Saturday, July 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. The festive, free-of-charge evening is being held as a way to give back to the clientele and celebrate the relationship the business has fostered with the village, said Eleni Tourloukis, whose family has owned the restaurant for the past seven years. We want to let the public know that we offer more than just great food and service, she said. We wanted to offer more, have some entertainment and do something exciting. The tasting will feature three Argentine winesa white, a red and a rosfrom the New Age winery located in Mendoza, Argentina, as well as three wine cocktails made from the wines. The cocktails, which are very popular in the Latin American country, will be the Tincho (white wine with ice and lime wedges); a sangria (red wine and fruit) and the Pink Lady (ros, cranberry juice and lemon lime soda over ice). I think attendees will really enjoy this affair, said Matt Morse, a sales representative with Capitol-Husting, the Milwaukee-area spirit and wine distributor providing the wine for the event. They will get to experience different kinds of winesweeter, lighter and more effervescent. Adding the cocktails to the mix makes these beverage options perfect for summer. The wines will be added to the selections already featured at the restaurant, said family member and manager Lindsey Tourloukis, who noted the wine tasting will likely be a regular thing. We will probably do this every year, she said. We get a lot of young families and new faces, and this is kind of our jumpstart to offering them something beyond the restaurant, to show them a really good time. The eventwhich will be held under a tent outside the restaurantwill include complimentary fruit, cheese and bread, and there will be several raffles for items such as State Fair tickets, wine baskets and massage gift cards. For more information, one can call the restaurant at (262) 255-3036.

Falls High School announces new coach for swimming, gymnastics

Menomonee Falls High School recently announced the filling of three coaching vacancies. The new coaches for the high school are: Eric Johnson, boys swimming: Johnson, a former University of Wisconsin-Madison swimmer, has agreed to lead the cooperative team of Menomonee Falls, Germantown, and Sussex. Johnsons last swim coaching assignment was at Birmingham Southern College as an assistant coach under Toby Wilcox. "I bring a new face to the program and a fresh start," Johnson said in a statement issued by the district. "My first and foremost goal will be to make practice the place to be and swimming the thing to do." "The selection team and I are excited to add Eric Johnson to the MFHS coaching staff," said Athletic and Activities Director Ryan Anderson. "I am excited to see how Eric uses his gift of recruiting the boys at Falls, Germantown, and Hamilton to increase the numbers of swimmers in our program. I am confident that he is the right fit for our young athletes. I am eager to see what he can do on the pool deck." Kelsey Ogle, girls swimming: Ogle has been a swim coach in the Menomonee Falls Swim Club and was previously a coach at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Ogle also had also been a coach for the West Bend Swim Club prior to her commitment to MFSC. "I am very excited to be coaching the Menomonee Falls/Hamilton Swimming and Diving team. The school has a history of producing fantastic swimmers and divers, and I hope to continue that trend. "The selection committee was impressed with Kelseys commitment to be a lifelong swim coach," Anderson said. "She has a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion for coaching the sport of swim. She has been involved in swimming and coaching for almost 20 years. Kym Remillard, girls gymnastics: Remillard has been a longtime coach at West Bend East. Remillard will oversee the cooperative program of Menomonee Falls and Germantown High Schools. "I am really looking forward to be working with a new team and coaching staff. Everyone here has made me feel welcome," Remillard said. "The selection team and I are excited to add Kym Remillard to the MFHS coaching staff," said Athletic and Activities Director Ryan Anderson. "Kym brings an incredible amount of experience at the high school and collegiate levels. She has worked with some of the best coaches in the state of Wisconsin. Her excitement for the program will be contagious with the girls that she will work with." Anderson also announced that Tony Pritchard is stepping down as girls golf coach due to work and family commitments. Carey leaves Hamilton program Dan Carey submitted his resignation as a teacher and a coach to the Hamilton School District June 27. Carey had been the Hamilton girls basketball coach for the past four seasons. Hamilton also confirmed that Al Haga resigned as coach of the hockey program, which involves Hamilton and several other school districts. In addition, girls soccer Coach Tom Konkol and girls softball Coach Jim Lawinger have retired from their coaching positions.

Sod or seed?
By Tresa Erickson When youre faced with the choice of sod or seed, it can be a difficult decision to make. They are both good options for dealing with a less-than-perfect lawn. There are pros and cons to each, and you must think through your decision carefully. Sod has been professionally cultivated and is ready to go. The roots are already there and just need to be placed into the soil for them to grow. Sod can be installed fairly quickly and easily and applied to almost any surface, flat or inclined, and it will stay put, even in heavy rains though you may have to stake it. It is also generally weed-free and requires little care. All you will have to do is water the sod heavily for the first few weeks of start-up, and it should take root and provide you with the lush lawn you envision. Because it is ready made, sod can be expensive, much more expensive than seed. You have to get it on the ground quick to protect your investment, whereas with seed, you have more leeway and more varieties to choose from. Most experts recommend seeding in the spring or fall. It does take some work to get seed into the ground, from fertilizing to raking to rolling. Seed also takes longer to grow and establish, and when placed on an incline, it can easily wash away. Although it may require less watering in the first weeks, seed will require mulch or hay, both of which can contain weed seeds and lead to weeds. Again, seed is less expensive, so if it does not work as well as you had hoped and you end up with some patchiness, it will be much less of a loss. There are pros and cons to sod and seed. Consider the options carefully, consult with an expert and make the right decision for your lawn and your budget.
