Congratulations to the Hudson Falls Class of 2013 Honor Graduates Honor graduates have maintained an average of 90% or above throughout their four years in high school. The Class of 2013 valedictorian is Meghan Barton. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Barton. Throughout her high school years she has participated in the Academic Quiz Bowl where she has been captain for the past two years. Meghan was the recipient of the RPI Medal Award, the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Award, The RIT Award for Creativity and Innovation and The St. Michaels College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience in her junior year. Meghan plans to major in chemical engineering and has been accepted at Clarkson University, RPI, Lehigh University, Cornell University and University of Rochester. This years salutatorian is Caitlin Wickes. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Wickes. Caitlin is a member of the National Honor Society. She has participated throughout her high school years on the Academic Quiz Bowl and in the past has participated on the Mock Trial Team. Caitlin was chosen to be our Girls State Representative and also received the Clarkson University Achievement Award, the RIT Computing Medal and the Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology. Caitlin has been accepted at SUNY Geneseo, Union College, University of Vermont, St. Lawrence University, Clarkson University, Lehigh University and the University of Rochester. Courtney Arlington is the daughter of Mr. Jamie Arlington. Courtney is vice president of the National Honor Society, president of the Student Council and president of the HOPE club. She is the recipient of the George Eastman Young Leaders Award from the University of Rochester, the Wells College 21st Century Leadership Award from Wells College and the Student Sage Scholar from The Sage Colleges. Courtney will be attending Hartwick College and studying music performance. Sara Casey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Casey. Sara has been a member of the National Honor Society. Sara has applied to SUNY Binghamton and been accepted at SUNY Brockport, LeMoyne, Buffalo State, Clarkson and SUNY Oswego. Ellie Gonyeau is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Todd Gonyeau. Ellie is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and SADD. She is currently treasurer of the Class of 2013. Ellie was the recipient of the Clarkson University Leadership Award and the Elmira College Key Award during her junior year. Ellie was accepted at SUNY Geneseo, Siena, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Cortland, Clarkson, and RIT. She will attend St. Lawrence University in the fall. Justin MacDuff is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne MacDuff Jr. Justin is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council.He was the recipient of the LeMoyne College Heights Award, St. Michaels College Book Award and the RIT Computing Award. Justin has been accepted at Lemoyne College, New York Institute of Technology, and St. Michaels College. Madison Salis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Salis. Madison was a member of the choir and orchestra. She also was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. Madison will attend SUNY Adirondack in the fall. The Federal Convention convened in the State House (Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, to revise the Articles of Confederation. Because the delegations from only two states were at first present, the members adjourned from day to day until a quorum of seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discussion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, rather than amend the existing Articles, the Convention would draft an entirely new frame of government. All through the summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated, and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Among the chief points at issue were how much power to allow the central government, how many representatives in Congress to allow each state, and how these representatives should be elected--directly by the people or by the state legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of freedom for individuals under the rule of law.

Ratification. By January 9, 1788, five states of the nine necessary for ratification had approved the Constitution--Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. But the eventual outcome remained uncertain in pivotal states such as Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. On February 6, withFederalists agreeing to recommend a list of amendments amounting to a bill of rights, Massachusetts ratified by a vote of 187 to 168. Although Massachusetts was now safely in the Federalist column, the recommendation of a bill of rights was a significant victory for the anti-Federalists. Six of the remaining states later appended similar recommendations. The United States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. It was ratified by nine states in July of 1988. By December 1791 the Bill of Rights was ratified by 3/4 of the states.

CONCERT- On Saturday, July 6 at 8pm Music from Salem opens their 27th season with a concert celebrating the music of English composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), whose works are characterized by both intimacy and imagination. The program includes a reflective teenage piece for solo viola (his chosen instrument besides the piano), and his mature and masterful cello sonata, as well as works by composers he revered Mozart, Purcell, and his beloved teacher, Frank Bridge. Britten, who was ostracized for his pacifism during WWII, found a powerful identity in chamber music, where you can hear each players voice as if straight from the soul. Acclaimed violinist Sharon Roffman will join Music from Salem directors Lila Brown (viola), Rhonda Rider (cello) and Judith Gordon (piano) in this first of our summer concert series. JULY 4TH COMMEMORATION AT SARATOGA NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK. Independence Day on Thursday, July 4 will be celebrated at Saratoga National Historical Park on Routes 4 and 32 in Stillwater, with a 10:00am Citizenship Ceremony and traditional readings of the Declaration of Independence with free lemonade toasts at 1 and 3pm. 10:00am - On the anniversary of our nation and upon the grounds where independence was won, 20 immigrants from countries all over the world will become new citizens of the United States of America. Fife and drums, color guard, musket and cannon firings frame this special event organized by Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of Saratoga Battlefield and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 1:00 and 3:00pm - As a messenger from 1776, park ranger Joe Craig reads from the Declaration of Independence with authentic 18th century toasts reflecting the insightful wit of the document signers. Enjoy free lemonade to share in the toasts, followed by celebratory musket and cannon firings. Saratoga Monument and Victory Woods in Victory, and the General Philip Schuyler House in Schuylerville, both located 8 miles north of Saratoga Battlefield, will also be open from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The Battlefield Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm, while the Battlefield tour road is open from 9:00am to 6:00pm daily during the summer.
