V. Lane Rawlins
15th president of the University of North Texas, the nations 26th
largest university
Rick Villarreal
has established
his place as one
of the most
progressive and
successful athletics
administrators
in the nation.
In 11 years as
the Director of
Athletics, Villarreal
developed and
brought to fruition
the most extensive facility development plan
in the history of North Texas Athletics. He is
also responsible for creating the organizational
foundation for a department that has seen
unprecedented academic and competitive
success during his tenure.
Since taking over on April 4, 2001, Villarreal
has brought to realization a dream of the Mean
Green community - an administrator who can
raise money, build facilities, direct championship
teams with quality coaches while helping
develop the lives of student-athletes.
Te ultimate recognition of Villarreals success
was realized when Conference USA announced
that North Texas would be one of six schools
that would be invited to join the fourishing
league beginning in the fall of 2013. Te
undeniable achievement that Villarreal led
North Texas to in the Sun Belt Conference
was a critical factor in making the department
attractive to other leagues.
Villarreal led the Mean Green to a premiere
position in the Sun Belt Conference, winning
18 conference championships and fnishing
among the top three in the Sun Belt Conference
all-sports championship standings nine out of
the his 11 years.
In the fall of 2011, North Texas unveiled
Apogee Stadium, the centerpiece of the
recently developed Mean Green Village, which
encompasses most of the academic, training
and competition facilities for NTs nearly 400
student-athletes.
With a capacity of nearly 31,000, the $78 million
Apogee stadium project brought the university a
multi-use facility with amenities comparable to
the best in the nation. It was completed in time
and on budget and also earned the prestigious
LEED Platinum certifcation, making it the frst
newly constructed collegiate football stadium in
the nation to earn the highest energy ef ciency
rating.
Villarreal is also responsible for building an $8
million athletic facility that houses a state-of-
the-art training suite as well as administration
and football of ces to go along with football
locker rooms. Te Mean Green Village
development project overseen by Villarreal
included the acquisition of additional property
and the renovation and construction of new
venues for basketball (practice), soccer, sofball,
golf and volleyball as well as a new academic
center for student-athletes.
As part of a joint strategic plan with the
University, Villarreal was also instrumental in
the fundraising, design and construction of a $3
million tennis facility.
Just as impressive and more important is the
signifcant progress made in both academics and
womens sports. Graduation rates have improved
by 50 percent to over 60 percent for student-
athletes in the past 11 years and the departments
current overall GPA is the highest of his tenure.
In addition, the program, which upon his
arrival lacked facilities and other components
essential to success in womens sports, has been
recognized by the Penn State Gender Equity
Report Card as the No. 1 program in the country
in recent years.
Villarreal came to Denton afer three years at
the University of Southern Mississippi, where he
served as associate athletic director. He has also
been a successful coach, football administrator,
private businessman and athletic department
fund-raiser.
A native of Gulfport, Miss., and a 1975 graduate
of St. John High School, Villarreal received
his bachelors degree in coach and sports
administration from Southern Mississippi in
1989.
Rick and his wife DLynn are the parents of
three children Kimberly, Justin and Tony and
have three grandchildren, Jayden, Katelyn and
Harrison.

metropolitan areas, UNT is Dallas-Fort Worths
leading university in size, scope and impact,
graduating more than 8,500 students a year.
A Division 1 school, UNT has been part of
the Sun Belt Conference since 2000 and has
experienced great success there, including 20
conference championships and four bowl games.
Under President Rawlins leadership UNTs
athletics program is on the rise. In 2013, UNT
will move to Conference USA. Te move will
come just two years afer UNT opened its world-
class, frst-of-its kind green Apogee Stadium
with a $20 million sponsorship. In the inaugural
season at Apogee Stadium, UNT hosted record
crowds breaking an all-time single-season
attendance record with more than 113,000 fans
and had its best football season since 2004.
Te stadium is one of more than 12 new athletics
facilities that UNT has developed since 2003.
Prior to joining UNT, President Rawlins led
Washington State University from 2000 to
2007 when it was designated a top-tier research
university and substantially grew its research
funding. His leadership also resulted in increased
enrollment of academically talented students and
a stronger statewide presence.
Following his retirement from WSU, he served
from 2007 to 2009 as the interim director of
the William D. Ruckelshaus Center for Confict
Resolution, a regional program of WSU and the
University of Washington.
Before joining WSU, he served as president of the

Dan McCarney knows how to build football programs. He was a part of historical
turnarounds at Iowa and Wisconsin. He was the architect of his own turnaround at
Iowa State. He helped win a national championship at Florida. He knows what it
takes to bring a program back from obscurity and he knows how to make successful
programs fourish.
McCarney didnt become a successful coach by chance. He has coached for, with and
against some of the most highly-respected coaches in the history of the game. He
developed his skills under College Football Hall of Fame head coach Hayden Fry at
Iowa. He honed his skills under another Hall of Famer in Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin.
Most recently, he was a top assistant under current Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer
at Florida. He simply knows what it takes to win.
McCarney, 59, took over a program that had not won more than three games in any
of the last seven years when he was named the Mean Greens 18th head football coach
November 30, 2010. In his frst year, he helped North Texas win fve games and fnish
higher in the fnal Sun Belt Conference standings than it had in any year since 2004.
McCarney also helped North Texas set a single-season attendance record with an
average of 18,864 people at each home game.
With more than 30 years of college coaching experience, including 13 years as a head
coach at Iowa State University, McCarney is an established leader. He came to North
Texas afer serving as the assistant head coach at the University of Florida where he had
been since 2008.
McCarney began his coaching career at the University of Iowa, where he was an
assistant under Fry for 11 years. He continued his career as the defensive coordinator
at the University of Wisconsin under Alvarez, directing some of the best defensive
teams in that schools history. In his 11 years with Fry at Iowa, their teams went to eight
bowl games afer not having a winning season the previous 19 years. At Wisconsin,
McCarney helped turn a team that had won 10 games in fve years into a Big 10
Conference championship and Rose Bowl appearance in his fourth year.
McCarney took over as head coach at Iowa State in 1995, assuming responsibility of a
program that had enjoyed just three winning seasons in the 16 years prior to his arrival.
Te year before McCarney became head coach at Iowa State, the Cyclones sufered
through an 0-10-1 record. His rebuilding process at Iowa State took fve years, but in
his sixth season, he became the frst head coach in the previous 94 years at Iowa State to
win nine games in a season and gave the Cyclones their frst-ever bowl victory and frst
bowl appearance in 23 years.
McCarney led Iowa State to fve bowl games from 2000-05 and was named the Big
12 Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 when his team earned a Big 12 North co-
championship. In 119 years of football at Iowa State, only 17 teams have won seven or
more games in a season and McCarney coached fve of those. McCarney remains the
longest-tenured (141 games) and winningest (56 victories) head football coach in Iowa
State history. His overall record in 13 years as the Cyclones head coach is 61-92.
Afer leaving Iowa State, McCarney spent one season as the assistant head coach at
the University of South Florida, where his defensive line ranked third in the nation
in tackles for loss. From 2008-10 at the University of Florida, McCarney helped
guide the team to two Southeastern Conference Championship games and three bowl
appearances. His 2008 Florida team fnished with a 13-1 record and won the BCS
National Championship behind a defense that ranked fourth in the nation in scoring
defense and ninth nationally in total defense.
In all, McCarney has coached in 20 bowl games in 35 years as a collegiate coach, fve of
which are current BCS bowls. He has coached 22 players that have been drafed by the
NFL, including nine that have gone in the frst three rounds.
McCarney is a 1975 graduate of the University of Iowa where he was a three-year
letterman on the ofensive line and a team captain in 1974. He is married to his wife
Margy and has three children, Jillian, Melanie and Shane.

MEAN GREEN OPENS HOME SCHEDULE AGAINST TEXAS SOUTHERN
- North Texas opens the second season in Apogee Stadium against the Texas Southern Tigers. Te
Mean Green fell on the road to LSU 41-14 while the Tigers won on a last second feld goal over
Prairie View A&M 44-41 in their season opener.
- Against LSU in the opening week, North Texas had nine players on defense that either set or tied
career highs with tackles.
- Redshirt freshman Zac Whitfeld had his frst career interception against LSU. It was the frst
interception by a Mean Green freshman since Jeremy Phillips in 2009. Digging deeper fnds that
Whitfelds interception was the frst by a freshman cornerback since Antoine Bush in 2006. Ad-
ditionally there were 98 players in the nation with interceptions afer the frst week and Whitfeld
was one of only seven freshman nationally to have a pick.
- North Texas is 55-24-2 all-time in home opening games. However, the Mean Green has lost seven
of the last eight home openers with the only win during that time coming in a victory over SMU
in 2006. Head Coach Dan McCarney lost his frst home-opener at North Texas with a 48-23 loss to
Houston last season which was also the frst game ever played in Apogee Stadium.
- Since returning to FBS (Div. I-A) football in 1995, North Texas is 5-0 against teams from the FCS
(Div. I-AA). Te Mean Green has only played one FCS team in the last 11 seasons, a 23-0 win over
Nicholls State in 2002. North Texas also defeated Samford, 41-6, in 2000, Indiana State 41-6 in
1997, Illinois State 20-14 in 1996 and Idaho State 41-38 in 1995.
- Te Mean Green is looking to avoid an 0-2 start to the season for the third straight year. Since
returning to FBS in 1995, North Texas has started the year out with a 1-1 record only six times,
with the most recent being 2009.
- Derek Tompsons 80-yard touchdown strike to Brelan Chancellor against LSU was tied for the
seventh-longest passing play in school history. Tompson now has two of the seven longest passes
in school history, as he sits sixth all-time with an 83-yard pass last season. Only Steven Ramsey,
who owns three of the top seven plays, has more than Tompson.
- Tompson had two touchdown passes for North Texas against LSU in the season opening game.
It is the frst time since returning to FBS football in 1995 that a quarterback has thrown for two
TDs in the season opening game and a receiver has had two TD receptions. Te last time a Mean
Green quarterback threw for two touchdowns in the frst game of the season was 1994 when Mitch
Maher threw for three. Meanwhile Chancellor was the frst North Texas wide receiver with two
touchdown receptions in the opening game since that same season opening game against Abilene
Christian. Tat night David Brown caught two TD passes from Maher.
THE MATCHUP BY THE NUMBERS
0 - Sacks allowed by the North Texas ofensive line against LSU. Te Mean Green is one of 28 teams
in the nation that did not allow a sack afer the frst week.
1 - North Texas has only faced one team ever from the SWAC. Te Mean Green played Alcorn
State in 1990, a 20-7 win at Fouts Field.
27.5 - Te Mean Green has averaged 27.5 points in the last four home openers. North Texas has
scored 20 or more points in six straight home openers and topped 30 in the last two home openers.
39.4 - By contrast North Texas has allowed 30 points or more in four straight home openers.
Opponents have averaged 39.4 points in the home opener for the Mean Green. NT hasnt held an
opponent to less than 10 points in a home opener since 2006 against SMU.
66.7 - Te Mean Green winning percentage in Apogee Stadium in 2011. It was the frst winning
home season for North Texas since 2004.
97 - With the season-opener at LSU last week, North Texas has begun its 97th season of football.
Since the inaugural season in 1913, North Texas has accumulated a record of 475-459-33, amassed
25 conference championships and played in seven bowl games.
100 - Te North Texas defense has not had a shutout since blanking the Troy Trojans 21-0 in 2003.
It has been 100 games since the last shutout.
240 - With 184 all-purpose yards against LSU, Brelan Chancellor sits just 240 all-purpose yards
away from being in the top-10 all-time at North Texas. He would become the ffh player since 2001
with more than 3,000 all-purpose yards in their career with the Mean Green.

By Tyler Bouldin
Ask any football player, and they will give
numerous reasons why they play the game.
Most athletes want to live their dream in
the NFL. A select few want to simply play
competitively while receiving a solid edu-
cation at a top university.
Not many athletes get to brag about a
chance at a masters degree in a time
span that some people might only pick
up a bachelors degree. Tats exactly the
situation that junior quarterback Derek
Tompson and junior defensive lineman
Ryan Boutwell have put themselves into.
Tompson enrolled at the University of
North Texas with 24 credit hours, which
was almost enough to consider him a
sophomore academically. Te Glen Rose,
Texas native didnt necessarily want to take
all those dual-credit courses in high school,
but the mental boost he received from his
mother, Wendy, turned out to be a blessing
in disguise.
My mother was breathing down my neck
about academics, said Tompson. She
kept telling me in high school to take dual-
credit classes to get ahead.
Boutwell also over-achieved at China
Spring High School, entering North Texas
in a position to graduate two years early.
Not only did the two players achieve that
goal, they were able to participate in the
same graduation ceremony that forced
head coach Dan McCarney to resched-
ule an August scrimmage because of the
festivities.
It felt like my frst win at North Texas
against Indiana, Tompson said about
walking across the stage. It was a feeling as
if I had another frst win as a starter. Like,
wow, I did it. It was very exciting, but it
didnt really hit me until the day I showed
up [at the graduation ceremony].
It was cool not to be by myself, said Bout-
well. He was two rows behind me.
Tompson plans to earn a masters degree
in sports management, while Boutwell
intends to receive his masters degree in
exercise physiology.
While it may be a special achievement for
both players, they agree that they dont
have to be the only ones who can have this
type of prelude to a career beyond college
football.
I took advantage of my tutors, said
Tompson. As a freshman, its mandatory
to have tutoring, and a lot of people didnt
want help once they became sophomores.
But as the classes got harder, I knew that
I might struggle. I was constantly asking
my advisor for a tutor for certain classes.
Without that help, I knew I would struggle
and thats what has set me apart.
Boutwell, like his beliefs on the football
feld, hates seeing others miss assignments
that could be detrimental to any overall
eforts toward success.
It makes me mad when I see people
slacking of because its not hard [to pass
classes], said Boutwell. If you just do
your work and what youre supposed to do,
youll be fne.
Tat is exactly what Coach McCarney
preaches. Te veteran football coach is no
doubt in charge of implementing a win-
ning product in Apogee Stadium, but also
wants his players to reach the peak of their
academic performance.
My job goes well beyond coaching foot-
ball, said McCarney. My coaching staf
and I have an obligation to the families of
these young men that we will help them
earn a degree and help them learn the skills
that will allow them to be successful in
whatever walk of life they choose.
Tompson and Boutwell are very familiar
with what one another can do, and have
been for quite some time.
Its fun because I had been playing against
Ryan since eighth grade, said Tompson.
Te fact that we came to the same school,
lived in the same house and graduated
with the same degree at the same time is
really cool. People on this team arent just
here to play football. Teyre also here for
academics.
With Tompson and Boutwell heading into
the 2012 season as clear choices to be start-
ers at their respective positions, its evident
that simultaneous success in academics and
athletics can always be an option.

in their cap and gowns following their graduation ceremony in August. Both student-
athletes earned their bachelors degree in three years.
