Advice for the handling of lubricants

It is essential that materials such as lubricants are stored and handled in an appropriate manner. Waste Oil Management Duty of care - UK legislation requires that companies take all reasonable care to dispose of waste oil properly and ensure it is disposed of in an approved manner. Prevent escape - you must not allow waste to escape. Complete records you must keep records of all consignements of waste. Safe disposal - you must not allow waste to be disposed of in such a way that it endangers life or causes pollution. Spill kits - emergency kits should be available and the staff should be trainined in their use. Storage Bulk tanks - should be bunded and labelled correctly. Measuring devices should be calibrated and service regularly. Barrels - should be stored in a bunded area and laid on their side to prevent moisture entry. Pack storage - should be secure and well ventilated it may also be necessary to control the temperature to keep certain fluids. Drains - ensure drains located in any storage areas are not connected to external drains, sewer or water course. Display appropriate warning signs. Hygiene Avoid unnecessary contact with new or used oils - use personal protective equipment. Never wear contaminated clothing or put oily rags in overall pockets. Seek first aid for cuts and abrasions. Ensure medical advice is sought if any irritation or skin abnormality appears.

Technical remarks/measurement methods

Flash Point The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the vapor of a combustible liquid can be made to ignite momentarily in air, as distinct from fire point. There are a number of ASTM tests for flash point, e.g. Cleveland open cup, Pensky-Martens closed tester, Tag closed tester, Tag open cup.

Flash point is an important indicator of the fire and explosion hazards associated with a petroleum product.

NLGI The National Lubrication Grease Institute established a simplified system for rating the consistency of grease (see table on the left). Pour Point The pour point is the lowest temperature at which an oil is observed to flow, when cooled under conditions prescribed by the test method ASTM D 97. The pour point is 3C (5F) above the temperature at which the oil in a test vessel shows no movement when the container is held horizontally for five seconds. TBN The Total Base Number is the weight in milligrams of acid, expressed in equivalent milligrams of KOH (potassium hydroxide), to neutralize all basic constituents of one gram of oil. Test Methods are ASTM D 664 (potentiometric method) or ASTM D 974 (colorimetric method).

Density The density of a petroleum product is defined as mass per unit volume, usually expressed as kilograms litre (kg/l).

The density is also used for the determination of the oil mass or pump power, in terms of lubrication performance it has only minor significance. Dropping Point The dropping point is the lowest temperature at which a grease is sufficiently fluid to drip, as determined by test method ASTM D 566 or D 2265. It is an indication of whether a grease will flow from a bearing at operating temperatures. The test is of limited significance in predicting overall service performance.

Viscosity - Overview

Penetration (worked) Penetration is reported as the tenths of a millimetre (penetration number) that a standard cone, acting under the influence of gravity, will penetrate the grease sample under test conditions prescribed by method ASTM D 217. Standard test temperature is 25C (77F). The higher the penetration number, the softer the grease. Worked penetration is the penetration of a sample immediately after it has been subjected to 60 double strokes of a standard grease worker.

ISO VG The ISO Viscosity Grades are an international system approved by the International Standards Organization (ISO) for classifying industrial lubricants according to viscosity. Each ISO viscosity grade number designation corresponds to the mid-point of a viscosity range expressed in centistokes (cSt) or mm2/s at 40C. For example, a lubricant with an ISO grade of 32 has a viscosity within the range of 28.8 - 35.2 cSt, the mid-point of which is 32.
