SPRING I 1979

The Sturgeon family at the annual missionary conference in Goiania, Galas. Jim, Carol,
Timothy and Mark.

MESSAGE FROM: JIM

Praise tiie Lord! The church is alive and v/ell and growing. We thank the Lord

daily for the enthusiasm of the Brazilian Christians as we work together to help oth ers come to a saving knowledge of our Lord and Savior jesus the Christ. We recog nize that we are to teach and care for those who are entrusted to us relying upon God for growth of the Church. This year we expect many more people to make de
cisions for the Lord and to come into the church.

Here are some plans for the year 1979.

lives to Christ.

We are going to show films about the

Life of Christ with an evangelistic message after the film to invite people to give their
We will ask for addresses so that we can make visits on those who are

interested in accepting.Christ, We have several adults and young people interested in making visitation calls. This will help our Brazilian brothers in the Lord become more involved in the church work. We are also planning to start a singing group to sing during the evangelistic film meetings. We have many in the church group with

musical talents. Many of the young people play the guitar. We are planning to buy some amplifiers later when we have money so that we can play for bigger groups and in outdoor situations. We already have enough instruments and amplifiers to start. Weare going to start in Santa Monica, a suburb in the southeastern part of Uberlandia. Many people are building houses and moving into this suburb. We know that we will have several invitations to show films in the homes and in the yards when the weather
permits.

We plan to meet in house church groups as the church grows. We will ask a strong Christian family if they would like to have the church meeting on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. We will not have meetings of the church in any home that is not obe dient to the Lord and shows evidence that the love of God reigns in their lives. We hope to have several of these house church groups meeting by the end of 1979 in
Santa Monica. After we have worked in this area and think that we can move to

another area of the city we will. Pray for us as we look forward to our task for the Lord this year. Now I want to tell you about the families that we do have in Santa Monica at the present time. I will write about some now and in the next newsletter inform you of
others.

Jose and Anna have the Sunday afternoon meeting in their home. They have four children, all daughters. They are a very faithful family. Two of their child
ren are Christians. Two daughters are married to baptized members of the church.

Jose is a carpenter, very well trained in the profession. He has had a great respon sibility in building the house and palm branch shelter on Harry Scates' (chacara)
small farm, jose also has taught other members of his family about Jesus. Several people have been baptized by Jose at our all-day retreat meetings on the last Sun day of each month. Carlos and llda live in our small home that we bought in 1975. We praise the Lord for this young married couple. They do not have any children. We are happy to have them living in our small house in the suburb of Santa Monica, llda is the daughter of Jose and Anna, Both Carlos and llda were baptized on the same day by Jose. Carlos is also a carpenter who witnesses a lot to his friends at work. We have a lot of home Bible studies and prayer meetings in their home. Pray for them that they will grow strong spiritually. Jose and Maria are also a young married couple. They have a baby boy. His name is Flavio. Maria is the daughter of Jose and Anna. She has not been bap tized yet. Jose is a baptized believer. He was baptized on February 25, 1979, jose is also a carpenter. He is very happy to be a new Christian and is reading the Bible daily. Jose, the father of Maria, had much influence on Jose making his deci sion to give his life to the Lord. Jose baptized Jose, Gabriel and Yvonne are coming to the church meetings. Gabriel was baptized in another church in Goiania, a city north of Uberlandia. Yvonne hasn't been bap tized yet. We are hoping that they will both grow spiritually and that Yvonne will

be baptized soon. Gabriel is the caretaker for Harry Scates' (chacara) small farm.

He really knows how to take c^re of plants. He planted a real nice garden. He sweeps and cleans the liouse and palm branch shelter. Gabriel and Yvonne have

three children. Their son joao Batista (John the Baptist) is in jail now for being
involved in a crime where an older man was killed. He is going to be moved to a prison in Bejo Horizonte, the capitol of our state, Minas Gerais. His two other

children, Edna and Edson, come to the church meetings. Please pray for this family. Our task is to train our Christian brothers who are faithful to share the Gospel

"You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the
things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these en trust to faithful men, who will iDe able to teach others aiso." 2 Timothy 2:1-2

TIME WITH CAROL

Housekeeping in Brazil sure is different than in the U.S. The red dirt sure is hard to get out of clothes and also shows on our white tile kitchen floor. Lately be

cause of the rain we've had less dust. When we have rain every day for a week (al most without stopping) I bring the clothes in the house to dry. When I bake some
thing I use the oven heat to dry the clothes. The most different thing about house

keeping here is during the rainy season (Dec. - Feb.). Shoes, drawers, etc. get mold and mildew on them. Most Brazilians are pretty good housekeepers. They have less knick-knacks than most Americans and probably less "junk" sitting around. My mother noticed this when she was here. She said "hardly anything is out of

place." We use a rodo (kind of like a mop and broom put together) to clean floors.
We put a rag on the rodo to dry the floors but first use the rubber part to sweep the water, I've seen Brazilians take a hose in the kitchen to clean. They use lots of
water.

Housework sometimes gets left in order to do the Lord's work. Visiting women

(both Christians and non-Christians) at leastone day or more a week has been a
blessing to me. At times maybe I have been discouraged or even homesick but God cheers me up when I give of myself without thought of return. We have visi ted many times a Christian woman who supports her seven children. Sometimes we take food or clothes but best of all is when we pray together and read the Bible. She tells how now she has Jesus to help her. Her home has only two rooms kitchen and bedroom for all those people. Also, our black 80 year old Christian

sister really is happy to have Christians visit her. This is one of her realJoys in life since she, too, is really poor and raises her two great grandchildren. Many times people will open up when they see you are interested in them and will even go to their homes. Tonight we are going to eat supper with a new Christian and family baptized only a month ago. We also enjoy having people in our home for a meal. A sick person seems to be lifted up, their day brightened, by love and prayer, either in their home or at the hospital. Many times seeing people worse off than we are

(either financially or being sick, etc.) helps usto countour blessings. Jesus says
when we've helped others, we've done it for Him.

Praise the Lord for the weekly ladies meetings. Again we are having two meet ings. I work with those in the suburb Saint Monica (Santa Monica). It's been a blessing to see the women share their needs and also their joys. Now it seems we "open up more" so that the Lord can have His way. We prayed and cried together for the mother present who requested prayer for her son still in jail (robbery and killing). Also, we prayed that the Lord would provide for the hugeexpenses for
uniforms and school materials.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY for those who have accepted our Lord and Savior and are growing in His love, bringing others to Jesus. We look at these people who have been transformed by Jesus' love and this plus prayer gives us courage to go on
telling others.

TIMOTHY AND MARK'S CORNER

Now I'm 6 years old.

My birthday was January 20 and I had 20 friends over.

They are my neighbors. They sure did like the food cheesebread and pastels (fried Brazilian sandwiches) and cake. They ate everything. We sang songsabout Jesus and played. They come to Sunday School, too. 1got some presents. After my birthday was over Mom and Dad got Mark a new bike with training wheels. I was happy for my brother because 1 have a bike and he was using my old tricycie
which kept breaking.

School started for me in February. I wear a uniform - a beige shirt and brown shorts. All the other children wear that too, except the girls wear brown skirts and beige blouses. My teacher is Johnjida. She's really good. We had a prayer that first day before I went to school and God sure helped me a lot then and every day.

1did my homework and the teacher wrote on it "Congratulations Great!" {Parabens Undo!). 1get to sing, paint, and write. I have a lunch box that I take for
a snack. I go to school after we eat lunch and get home before supper. Mom or Dad takes me to school and picks me up. Mark likes to help me get ready. Swimming lessons are fun. I started those the same time I started school except I go in the morning. My teacher is Luke, like the man who loved Jesus in the Bible. It rained every day for a while but we did exercises and then went swimming. I

have swimming lessons four days a week (Tuesday - Friday) so I get to play other things other days. Now it's Carnival time so I don't have school or swimming les sons for three days. I see on T.V. the people dancing with fancy clothes on. They like to dance or jump all night and beat drums. It's loud music and they use fire crackers, too. I wonder if that really makes them happy. I have Jesus and He makes Mark and me, Mom and Dad happy. He's with me when I play, have school, go swimming, and everything else 1do, too. 1esus is our Best Friend!

Timothy with his iunch box and briefcase for school. He really likes his school.

This is Timothy's sixth birthday on janur ary 20, 1979. I^arl^ is enjoying the party
too. Mark is three years old.

VISITING WITH JIM

Time isswiftly approaching for our visit to the United States. We are try
ing to get all of the papers ready to turn In to the Brazilian Department of

justice in Brasilia, the Federal Capitol of Brazil. We must turn in copies of

our identification cards, my ordination certificate, diplomas, and various other items. This is all required to get an exemption from the deposit required of all those traveling out of Brazil. The money is deposited in the Bank of Brazil, S.A. to be returned after one year without monetary correc tion or interest. We would each have to pay 22,000.00 cruzeiros or 880.00 U.S. dollars. Between the four of us, that would make 3,520.00 U.S. dollars. We must have the exemption of depositing this money before we can have our passports stamped with exit visas. Pray for us as we return to the United States to visit relatives, friends, and Christian brothers and sisters in
August, 1979. Now 1 want to tell you about some other families in the church in Santa

Monica and the church in the city. Tarcizio and Maria jose are making plans to be baptized in the near future.

Several of the men and I have been visiting them about baptism, preparing
them to make this important decision to follow Jesus as Lord and Savior.

They have six children. He works at the Engineering University as a lab assis
tant.

Oieir and lldes are another couple who live in Santa Monica. They are also studying baptism and preparing to be baptized. They have four children. They are friends of Tarcizio and Maria Jose. Oleir is a bricklayer and works In construction of apartment buildings. Pray for these two families. Marcia is a widow that has two sons, Rubens and Ivan. She has been a Christian now for four years. Her husband {a truck driver) was killed in an
accident. Her two boys always come to church with her. Marcia works in
Harry Scales' Bible Book Store. Valdo and Olezia are a couple who have been members of the church for

about seven years. They gave their lives to jesus before we came to Brazil.

They are always trying to help other people to have a personal faith in Jesus. They have six children. Valdo washes cars and sells chickens to make a living.
Jesus really helps them in their lives.

TIME WITH CAROL

Winter is here in Brazil. Although most days aren't real cold, once in
awhile we have a cold streak. Last week we wore sweaters to bed and got out our winter coats from the U.S. which we thought we'd never use. Mark even wore a coat to bed! People would stand out in the sun to get warm. Since

people don't have hot water to wash clothes and dishes, they sure get cold. Many of the poor do not have warm clothes. One year the Christians in the U.S. sent sweaters and socks and the people sure appreciated them. Isn't God
big to make it cold here and hot in the U.S.?

I'm 30 now. May 27 was my birthday, the day that four new Christians

were born (baptized into Jesus). Praise the Lord we've all been healthy. Last
year I spent my birthday in bed with hepatitis and then Jim got it too. I don't think we'll ever forget May and June of 1978. These beautiful inspirational moments I'd like to share with you. ledes cried as she shared of not being able to sleep because of terrible dreams {had

been involved in spiritualism). Since she and her husband have accepted Jesus and are reading their Bible she can sleep and is truly happy. She prayed for the first time such a humble prayer that touched us all. She is my age and has had eight children, but four died. Another woman tells us how she never had peace in her whole life. She would run out in the night or lock herself In a room. Jesus now has given her
a new life and peace.

Ilda and Ivone trust in God. Ilda is trusting God to give her a baby. Her husband and her cannot have children, but know that God is a loving Father. They are waiting on the Lord for a baby of their own or to adopt a baby. Ivone and her husband have three children, but one is in jail. They have learned to trust in God to take care of their 18-year old son and pray that he will accept Jesus and be transformed by Jesus' love. Many others tell how Jesus has changed their lives "as different as black and white" one said. Often as we visit in homes we see the devil's power. We have seen how Jesus gives the love, peace, and security no one else has been able to give. Last week we shared together as seven Christian young people ate popcorn with us. We praise God and thank you for your support to us so that we can share our home, our food, our lives, but most of all, SHARE JESUS.

TIMOTHY AND MARK'S CORNER

Jesus makes us happy! He gives us wind to fly our kites. I can make kites that go way up high. I use paper and glue and string. I make Mark a kite, too. He can make a rea' long tail so long that sometimes we step on it

(about as long as Mark Is tall).

The other day ii 'ained so hard. We were in bed. I asked Mom if God gets rained on and where God's water comes from. I'm learning a lot. I say the Lord's Prayer in Portuguese and some verses out of the Bible. I'm starting to
learn to read so I told Mom and Dad I want to read the Bible. Guess what?

I found my name in the Bible and Mark's too! We love Jesus and want to help Him like Timothy and Mark in the Bible. I get to have winter vacation for thirty days so I won't go to school until August. Then we get to go see my grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles,

cousins and friends in the United States. We get to go on the airplane since
It's too far to go in the car. We can even see some snow there. We're counting the days until we can see you.

"Daddy^ how long willit take us to get to the United States? We have to go by airplane! This
carriage is too slow!"

In our last newsletter I mentioned two couples who were making plans to be baptized. Well during the last meeting that we attended on Harry Scates' small farm
we rejoiced as Tarcizio and Maria Jose were baptized. Tarcizio works as a lab assis tant at the Engineering University In Uberlandia. Also we rejoice that Olair and

Praise the Lord! We are back home (really back to one of our homes for v\^e are
at home in Brazil, too). Of course our best home will be our eternal home in heaven.

We arrived August 15 in Chicago to visit my sister, Marilyn and family. Roger Fergu
son, her husband, is the preacher at Lansing Christian Church where we spent our first spirit-filled worship service since we got back. My parents, Christie and Clark were also there. What a beautiful reunion we had, all being together after three years! Again we compare the blessed reunion with family and friends to our even better re union with Jesus, brothers and sisters in Christ in heaven. Culture shock is being experienced as we return. Much has changed. After liv ing in Brazil for five and a half years we sometimes forget how it is here in the United

States. We notice the big, nice houses, the big cars, and the many material

things. Even more we notice the necessity of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour living
in the people. Nobody in any country has a satisfying, abundant, eternal life
without Jesus.

After living In suitcases for about a month, we are now in "our" (rented)

mobile home in Olathe, Colorado (50 miles from Grand Junction). We packed every thing in Brazil and stored it there. Now we are unpacking. Mark asked, "Where do we live?" God is so good providing a home for us near Timothy's school. We are enjoy ing this small town and the small lawn we have; also the empty lot with a calf and two turkeys in front of our home. God has given us great neighbors, too. Jim's family
lives on a farm nearby. We're looking forward to seeing many of you these next few months. We've felt the Holy Spirit and the love of Jesus as We've visited in homes and churches. It's

fun to share personally how God is working in Brazil and to share your testimonies
of God's love and power here. Leaving Brazil for a few months was kind of hard because of our close

Christian family there. They told us to be sure and come back (many ask if life is
better here in the U.S.). We pray for the Christians and the unsaved. We write letters

and tell the showers of blessings we are receiving. We see that we only plant, and/or water, but that God gives the increase. We are only the finger of God, weak vessels to carry the Good News to others. Pray for us, the leaders (Harry Scates family and Iron's family), the Christian family
there in Uberlandia, and for the many lost In Brazil.
TIMOTHY'S AND MARK'S CORNER

Airplanes go fast and are fun! We

left Brazil at night {10:30 p.m.) and got

to the United States the next day (at

noon.) We ate a lot on the airplane. I stay

ed awake to eat at midnight but Mark missed out because he was asleep. Then

I
"Boy, mommy It sure takes a lot of suitcases to go to the Un
ited States."

I went to sleep, too, and we woke up for breakfast real early. We got off the plane so It could get some more gas, then flew again. God really makes the clouds
pretty and the ocean, too. We landed in

New York and everybody was talking English. We hurried fast to get on an other huge airplane (eight seats across) to go to Chicago where our aunt, uncle,
and cousin Stephanie met us.

We looked around on the way to our cousin's house. Things are different herel

We were pretty tired but we played. Our cousin thought we didn't havs any toys in Brazil because we played so much and had lots of fun. (We do have toys but they're
different and we'd been sitting so long in the airplane.) Grandma and Grandpa Shaw, Aunt Gristle, and Uncle Clark came to our cousin's house. Mark talked Portuguese and still does but I help so people under stand him. It's fun to talk to our grandparents and not just write letters. After a few days we rode back to Grand Junction with grandma and grandpa. Two days is a long time riding in the car, especially after being on the airplane a long time.
Brazil Is a long ways from Colorado.

Mark asks so many questions like where Is the snow and what Is this and what
smel! is that. Mom fixes us rice and beans like we eat in Brazil. We like the food here

too-cereal, potato chips, marshmallows, and ice cream (cones ,too.) I go to school. I'm in the first grade. Here schools are different than In Brazil. There are lots of things to play with-balls, swings, and slides. They play other kinds
of ball than soccer. I get to eat the good food made at our school. We live close to our Grandma and Grandpa Sturgeon and aunts and uncles and cousins so we really have fun. Our house has wheels on it. What we like best in our house is the bathtub because we just have a shower in Brazil.

It's great here In the U.S. but we still like Brazil, too. Some day (in January)
we're going back there again. We have friends waiting for us to help them know
about Jesus and the Bible.
