Management Functions: -

Planning:Planning is a management function that involves defining goals, establishing strategies, developing plans to integrate and coordinate activities.

Mr. Naseem Ahmed sales manager of UNILEVER has told us that in Unilever most of planning is done by the top management of the company and he makes plans and develop strategies to achieve organizational goals and objectives and plans relating to marketing of products like advertisement of product through different mediums like electronic or print media. Upper-managements consist of: Chairman President Board of directors

Organizing: Organizing means determining what needs to be done, how it will be done and who is to do it? Or Discussing a proposed company restructuring

According to Mr. Naseem Ahmed organizing is definitely a very important function performed by a manager. In Unilever organizing is even more important because of its vast size and multinational status and he organizes his employees by assigning them appropriate work that is related to their designation and according to their abilities.

Leading: Leading involves directing, motivating, leading and any other actions involved in dealing with the people. Or Praising a sub-ordinate for outstanding performance

Mr. Naseem Ahmed being a Sales manager in Unilever leads his employees as well. He has to motivate and inspire them in times of disappointment and guide them in certain matters of work. One such example is when one of employees was not able to work properly because of some uncertain reason, in this situating he had to step in and motivate him to concentrate on his work by understanding problems he is suffering from or by giving him proper training about things/matters on which he is lacking and

by giving him rewards and compensations. He also tries to have good relations with his employees so that he is able to lead them properly.

Controlling: Controlling means monitoring activities to ensure that they are going as planned. Or Monitoring organizational progress towards goal attainment

In Unilever all employees are expected to avoid personnel activities and financial interests which could conflict with their responsibilities to the company. According to Mr. Naseem Ahmed he tries to make sure that his department is working according to

the instructions assigned to them and they are not involved in any time wasting activities. He evaluates the results after every certain time to make sure the goals assigned to him and his department is being achieved as expected. If there is any ambiguity in work then he informs the employee responsible and guides him in the matter and takes action according to the circumstances.

In short he concluded that: -

Management does not occur in a tidy and step by step function/fashion.

Managers are involved in different kind of activities simultaneously.

Managerial Roles: -

Set of behavior which a person (manager) has to perform while acquiring some specific position There are three different types of management roles which a manager has to perform and they are: -

1. Interpersonal role 2. Informational role 3. Decisional role

Interpersonal Role: Involve people and duties that are that are ceremonial and symbolic in nature. These roles include roles of manger as a figurehead, leader and liaison.

Mr. Naseem Ahmed has told us that being a sales manager of a multinational corporation he has to perform various interpersonal roles and probably most important of them is liaison because mostly he has to act as a coordinator among people, group and organization. He also has to act as a leader, an inspiring figure for his workers who formally or informally show his employees how to do things, how to perform under pressure and all that.

Informational Role: Receiving, collecting and disseminating information These roles include roles of manger as a monitor, disseminator and spokes person. Mr. Naseem Ahmed has told us that for maintaining the performance of his department effectively and efficiently he gets new up-to-date (day-to-day) information. Since he is a sales manager he has to stay up to date with present world. He also has to give sales reports of his competitors to his seniors and disseminate information to his seniors related to the sales of products under his management.

Decisional Role: Revolve around making choices and choosing alternatives. These roles include roles of manger as an entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator. Mr. Naseem Ahmed has to make many decisions related to his work just like any other manager in managerial world. He has to make decisions related to sales strategy and deciding how to improve companys sale and profit and how to motivate those workers who are not properly working and other decisions related to sales.

Managerial Skills: In addition to fulfilling numerous roles, managers also need a number of specific skills if they are to succeed. The most fundamental management skills are:1. Conceptual skills 2. Inter-personal skills 3. Technical Skills

Conceptual skills:Ability to work well individually or in groups Or The managers ability to think in the abstract

Conceptual skills are very important for a manager. Mr. Naseem Ahmed said Managers need the mental capacity to understand the overall workings of the organization and its environment, to grasp how all parts of the organization fits together, and to view the organization in the holistic manner. This allows them to think strategically, to see the big picture and to make broad-based decisions that serve the overall organization. Good managers have to use pro-active approach for solving a problem Qualities of a good manager are: -

Inter-personal/Human skills:Pertaining to people/interaction with different people As a sales manager Mr. Naseem Ahmed has to communicate with different people for building trust of sub-ordinates and for handling disputes among the employees. Managers spend considerable time interacting with people both inside and outside the organization for obvious reasons. In short: A manager who has good interpersonal skills is likely to be more successful

Technical skills:Knowledge about a specific field The skills necessary to accomplish or understand the specific kind of work being done in an organization. e.g.
