Introducing Legacy Exxons Engineering International Practices on CD-ROM (including June 2000 update)
Version 14.1
Information contained on the CD-ROM is Proprietary to ExxonMobil
This Word-for-Windows file is designed to be viewed on your screen, or printed and read.

Scope
This version of legacy Exxons International Practices Manual CD-ROM was created for use with Adobes Acrobat Reader Version 3.01 or 4.0 for viewing practices and for full-text searching of their contents. Both functions work directly off actual images of the practices which are provided in PDF electronic file format for easy viewing of both text and graphics, and for printing exact replicas where required for hard copy distribution. A copy of Acrobat 3.01 Reader is provided for locations where not already installed. As noted below, this CD-ROM version contains the complete International Practices Manual updated through June 2000, and History Background Documents for selected IP's of this manual. Manual Title

The CD also contains all of the International Practices in an MS Word 97 format to allow more efficient text or graphics copy and paste type functions of pertinent practice requirements, as might be needed for purchase inquiry documents, etc. The document content, however, must not be edited / altered in any way while still retaining its current Practice designation as an IP. To do otherwise would compromise the integrity of the practice involved. These document files are located in the wordfile.msw directory on the CD-ROM which can be easily accessed through Explorer in a Windows 95 PC. Use them directly from the CD or copy them to your hard drive as appropriate. An easy to follow Tutorial is included in the electronic manuals module that will provide an extensive overview of the functionality of Acrobat Reader. The tutorial points out specific tools and functionality to help you easily navigate and search for needed information. More detailed information can be readily found in the Help files that Acrobat provides.

Installation
The set-up program for the International Practices CD-ROM is designed to run on Windows 95 or NT (i.e. 32-bit) systems. You will be given the option of installing the IP and History Document contents to your hard drive, running the manuals from your CD ROM drive or from the LAN server. The LAN drive must be mapped prior to installation. Please see the instructions for mapping a drive in the READ ME document. The Acrobat Reader 3.01 with Search must be run from your hard drive. The total hard drive space needed if you choose to install the file contents is approximately 45MB. IMPORTANT

Acrobat Overview
The Acrobat Reader offers a convenient viewer that operates just the way you would expect if you are familiar with Exxon's recommended suite of Microsoft's Windows applications. Exact replicas of the hardcopy pages can be seen via the program installation as read by the Reader. Alternatively, users can associate the *.pdf extension with the Reader and double-click on any of the image files directly. This will automatically execute into the Acrobat Reader application. The Reader includes its own Help files. Other popular features include simple search within an open document, copy-and-paste text, as well as print replicas of the hard-copy pages. Numerous alternatives are provided to navigate within a document, and images can be magnified up to 800%.

Acrobat Search Features for Windows

Select Manuals - Searches can be restricted to any individual manual or a combination of manuals by selecting or deselecting the check boxes in the Index Selection Window. Full-Text Search Features - Users will benefit from powerful full-text search capabilities. The Search command has powerful tools for limiting and expanding the definition of the term for which you are searching. Search allows variations of wild-card characters, Boolean operators, word stemming, sounds like, and the thesaurus option. These terms and explanations for how they can be used are explained in more detail in the Acrobat Search Help File. Word Search - provides simple searches within the open PDF document and augments global (fulltext) searching across all documents. This feature is engaged from the toolbar by selecting the binoculars button. Search by Title, Subject and Keyword the practices have been indexed to allow you to search by title, subject and keywords. Just key in any part of the term in the applicable field to help narrow your search results. Examples of what terms were used to populate those fields are as follows: + + + + The title field was indexed with the manual ID, (IP) practice number and title: IP 10-7-1 General Purpose Steam Turbines The subject field was indexed with the practice number: IP 10-7-1 The author field has been indexed to show the technology network owner of the practice: Machinery The keyword field was indexed with the words from the title, practice number, and date: General, Purpose, Steam Turbines, IP 10-7-1, March 1998.

The added Search Plug-in feature (Eye Icon) has been updated for this version of the International Practices CD-ROM. The results window will display the number of hits per document and the hit list can be copied and pasted into any text application. Searching for information is similar to Acrobat search. Future development will allow you to launch the documents from the results window.

Acrobat Viewing Features for Windows

Hyperlinks - enable jumping to cross-referenced practices, tables, and figures with a single click of the mouse. All hyperlinks in the electronic manuals are color coded by blue text. Copy-and-paste - to insert text into other applications like Word for Windows simply by copying selected text to the Window's clipboard or by saving an entire practice on diskette. Select the abc button from the toolbar for this function. Bookmarks - are included in every practice file that will link you back to the Main Screen, the Numerical Index for that manual and to the Table of Contents for that section. Just double-click on the applicable title and the applicable practice will automatically open.

Acrobat Viewing Features for Windows (Cont)

Thumbnails - are included in every practice file. Thumbnails provide a full page view of each page in the document. Use them to navigate to a specific page by just clicking on that page. Resize or move the marquee box on the thumbnail to zoom in or scroll to a specific location on the page. The Display Thumbnails button is the third button from the left on the toolbar. Open Multiple Documents is another feature that gives you the flexibility of viewing multiple practices at the same time. The first time you execute into Acrobat, you will need to set the preference setting to allow for this function. Go to FILE, PREFERENCES, GENERAL. Uncheck open cross document links in same window. When you have more than one document open, you can easily navigate through them by selecting the Windows Menu. The active documents will be listed.

Questionable Characters and Images in Acrobat

As much as we tried, we still may have not attained 100% fidelity in the conversion of fonts and some graphics displayed and printed by Acrobat. Some characters have been especially troublesome and may display incorrectly at some levels of zoom. For example, the degree symbol ( ) might display as an underline ( _ ) until you zoom in. Printing is usually reliable in spite of questionable screen displays. Please advise us of any problems, so they can be eliminated in future versions.

Word 97 Reference Files

The CD contains a file copy for each of the IP documents in MS Word 97 format for reference purposes as may be needed to extract pertinent text or graphics from a particular practice for purchase inquiry documents or project specifications. Word 97 files are located for this purpose in the wordfile.msw directory of the CD ROM for all International Practices (IP). The source word document must not be altered from their current state, i.e., changes that might add, delete or revise practice requirements or wording, and still retain the designation of a legacy Exxon IP. The contents of the CD-ROM, including the Word and PDF files, contain heritage Exxon proprietary information and are intended for authorized company use only. Please refer to IP 0-0-1 for additional information in this regard on the use and explanation of the International Practices.

Practice Data Structure

The Acrobat.PDF and Word.DOC files are logically named according to their practice number and are located within respective directory / subdirectory structures for each Manual / Section that the source practice resides.
