SINGAPORE (WSSS) TO HONG KONG (VHHH)

*
Tutorial Flight for the Phoenix Simulation Software Airbus A340-300 This tutorial replicates the weekly Cathay Pacific A340-300 flight number CX734 from Singapore (Changi International) to Hong Kong (Chek Lap Kok International). The flight leaves Singapore each Wednesday evening. In reality the flight departs at 6:15 p.m. local time, but so that we can enjoy the sunset enroute well depart before dusk, by bringing the departure time forward to 4:15 p.m. Well make a night arrival at Hong Kongabout 3 hours 45 minutes laterat approximately 8:00 p.m. local time. By all means, fly the real flight timings if you prefer. The tutorial assumes you have had some practice at the basics of operating the PSS Airbus family of aircraft for FS2002 and FS2004. If not, it is recommended that you complete the Toronto Pearson (CYYZ) to Chicago O'Hare (KORD) A330 tutorial available at the PSS website. You might also like to try my PSS A330-200 tutorial Sydney to Melbourne, Australia. Download from: www.avsim.com/pss/manuals/a330_qantas_tutorial_v2.zip. Unlike the above tutorial, this flight starts with a Cold and Dark Cockpit with no engines or aircraft systems running. If you have the panel configuration set up with Start with a Cold and Dark Cockpit unchecked, open the Panel Configuration Utility and check this option to go through the whole startup procedure. Alternatively, if you prefer you can begin the flight with the engines and other systems fired upjust skip over the sections dealing with the startup procedure. Prefer a shorter flight? For those of you who would prefer a shorter tutorial flight, I have included an optional enroute diversion to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in Vietnam. If you wish to take this option (which might be due to, say, a medical emergency with a passenger) the diverted flight will take about 2 hours in total. It will also provide practice at modifying the flight plan enroute, jettisoning fuel to adjust our landing weight, and using selected vertical and horizontal navigation modes to comply with ATC directions, in the absence of a Standard Arrival Route (STAR) for the diversion airport. Whichever option you choose (or both), enjoy the flight! John Cantwell Canberra, Australia john@fsadventures.net

Our route will be from Singapore via a Standard Instrument Departure (SID), then along a high altitude airway taking us past Malaysia, Vietnam and over the South China Sea, before joining a Standard Arrival Route (STAR) to land at Hong Kong on runway 25L. NOTE Well use the VMR3B SID procedure from Changi Intl Runway 20L. This involves an initial climb on the runway heading then a left climbing turn to the VTK (Tekong) VOR. From VTK we turn left to track northwest for about 24 nautical miles before turning due north to the VMR (Mersing) VOR, which is the completion of the SID. Here we join the high altitude airway to begin our first leg to Hong Kong.

EFIS Panel: Confirm BARO set for hPa by clicking the hPa label on the panel (Hectapascals) Set QNH to 1009 by clicking on the left or right side of the BARO knob as required TIP The PSS A330/A340 configuration uses the B key to switch between local and Standard pressure (inHg or hPa) but this doesnt reset the barometric pressure if FS2004 detects that it has changed. To get around this, you might find it useful to make a new keyboard assignment in FS2004. Go to main menu Options > Controls > Assignments On the Buttons/Key page, scroll down a little to the Altimeter (reset) entry Left click on this entry, then click on Change Assignment In the dialogue box, press your new key combination: - try CTRL+B (by default Autopilot Backcourse Hold ) - or SHIFT+B (by default Rotor Brake) Click OK, OK Press your new Altimeter (reset) key I chose to use CTRL+B Note the altitude reading in the PFD resets to the correct airfield elevation of about 30 ft Confirm FD is ON Set both VOR/ADF 1 and 2 selectors to VOR (fully right) FCU: Left click on SPD knob for managed mode; it will show --Left click on HDG knob for managed mode; it will show --Set ALT to 10000

Set the ALT to 37000 and push (left click) the ALT knob for a managed climb, handing control of vertical navigation back to the flight management system Set EFIS range display to 160 The aircraft will climb towards our cruise altitude of 37,000 feet You can now either stay in the cockpit or jump to the spot view. Monitor the progress of the aircraft along the route by checking the MCDU. NOTE From the time we attain cruise altitude it will take about 45 minutes to reach a point where, if you prefer, we can simulate a diversion to make the tutorial shorter (around 2 hours in total). If you do wish to shorten the flight, at this point you can go to Appendix 1 starting on page 30, which simulates a diversion to Ho Chi City, Vietnam. If you want to fly the whole tutorial to Hong Honk, continue on to the next section called UPDATING DESTINATION WEATHER HONG KONG.

TIP You can increase the simulation rate to speed through the cruise sections of either flight. Press ALT to access the FS2004 menu bar Select Options > Simulation Rate Select your preferred simulation rate Note: Rates up 8x works best. Because the Airbus FMS allows the aircraft to operate within an altitude band rather than an absolute altitude, higher simulation rates can cause unpleasant altitude fluctuations. Remember to go back to Normal rate when youve reached the desired point in the flight!

There are mountains very close to the approach and glide paths. You will almost certainly get at least one terrain warning from the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) during the approach. In particular, the track to the ILS intercept point takes you towards rising terrainthe turn onto the ILS comes quite late! In reality ATC provides very careful radar altitude instructions to incoming aircraft. In this simulation, just adhere to the suggested altitude settings and trust the FMS to guide you down the glide path. If you wish, you can disable the GPWS alarms by pressing the GPWS SYS button on the lower left of the overhead panel. If you prefer, you could reset the time to daylight so you can see the terrain or re-fly the tutorial with a morning start time so you have daylight throughout the flight.

This section creates a shorter tutorial flight a diversion to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. From the time we attain cruise altitude it will take about 45 minutes to reach this point. 20 miles short of CS (Conson) CABIN CREW MESSAGE A member of the cabin crew has come forward to tell you that a passenger has suffered some sort of seizure and lapsed into unconsciousness. A doctor who is on board has reported that the passenger is now stable but is seriously ill. The doctor recommends that the Captain should land at the nearest major airport as soon as possible. You inspect your charts and decide that Tansonnhat International Airport (VVTS), Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam is the best option for a diversion. You advise ATC and your company of your intentions. ATC MESSAGE Cathay 734, proceed direct to Vung Tau VOR. Cross Vung Tau VOR at 8000 feet, descend at your discretion. Expect vectors for an ILS approach to runway 25 Right. Medical services have been alerted.

Open the MCDU The waypoint CS should be the next waypoint (shown in white) at LSK2L Press DIR Enter VTV (the Vung Tau VOR) Press LSK1L to enter this into the DIR TO field T-P (turning point) appears in the ND and the aircraft turns towards the new waypoint Note that ----- F-PLN DISCONTINUITY----- appears in the MCDU; you can ignore this because well be using ATC vectors and selected flight modes instead of the flight plan. Set the ALT to 8000 ft and pull (right click) the ALT knob for a selected descent Press the right LSK opposite the new VTV waypoint to open the Vertical Revision page Enter 8000 Enter this into the ALT CSTR field LSK3R Enter 250 Enter this into the SPD CSTR field LSK3L Press RETURN LSK6L Close the MCDU
