Opening: (5-10 minutes) Welcome new students and have everyone introduce themselves if applicable.

. Coach will write 3-4 debate style questions for the students to give a short impromptu speech on. Coach will present 5 news topics they found in the last week to the students, which will be the debate topic. Assign ambassador and president for the next day. Speech Drills: (10 minutes) Do impossible drills, the speaker gets a random topic and has to speak about it without any preparation for as long as they can. Do Impromptu speeches where the students have to do speeches based on topics that will be debated that day. Topic of the Day: (30 minutes) Lecture: What is Debate? Debate is taking a side and sticking to it, disagreeing with the other debaters views regardless of what your actual opinions are. Its about clashing with the other side and giving reasons why your arguments you are saying are true. Making An Argument: the best way to make an argument that is persuasive and most convincing is following the Toolman model. o Claim: This is the basic idea of your argument that youre making. Example: college education is too expensive o Data: this is data or examples that you have to support your argument. Example: Tuition has gone up, while services have gone down. Job opportunities are also not there anymore. o Warrant: This is how you connect the data to your claim in order to prove that its true. Example: Rising tuition rates and lowered opportunities mean that college isnt worth it anymore. Dont Contradict Yourself: never make contradicting arguments, its bad for your ethos and oftentimes it makes it very easy to lose debate rounds as a result of it. Interaction: (20 minutes) Have the kids start writing arguments using the toolman model, providing an argument, data and a warrant. Give them access to my computer if they need it. Walk around and help the kids think of different arguments to write. Debate Exercise: Have a debate round in worlds style debate. Have a different student per speech as needed, ask the students what topics they want to debate and then

debate them. They will be more interested if it involves things they want to talk about. o 1AC- 3 minutes o Cross examination 1 minute o 1NC- 3 minutes o Cross examination 1 minute o 2AC- 3 minutes o 2NC- 3 minutes o 1NR- 2 minutes o 1AR- 2 minutes At the end, have people repeat their speeches but also prep a strategy that is different from the normal one they prepared before. After the prepping, list all the possible strategies for the topic on the whiteboard and have the kids take note of the numerous options they have.

Closing Section: Give some closing feedback for everyone on some things that need to be improved on. Homework is to redo their individual speeches and practice writing arguments that they believe in. Assign them on an individual basis.
