Course Plan of Engineering Chemistry Prerequisites: The students must have undergone a course in +1 and +2 level about Fundamentals

of Chemistry, EMF, Reference electrodes, Batteries, Corrosion, Polymers, Energy sources and water Chemistry is helpful for this course.

Construction, working and applications of various batteries and fuel cells. What is corrosion and electrochemical theory of corrosion. What are the different methods to prevent the corrosion. Explain electroplating and electroless plating. What are fuels, determination of calorific value of a fuel, cracking and reformation of heavy oil, Knocking and its prevention. 7. Define liquid crystals, various types of mesophases and their uses. 8. What are polymers, Techniques of polymerization, Tg, Synthesis of some synthetic polymers, Conducting polymers. 9. What is hard water, alkalinity of and how can we determine? 10. Describe various methods of desalination of sea water. 11. COD, BOD and their determination. Course Content Course Title: Engineering Chemistry Teaching Hours: 52 Unit - I Chapter 1: Electrochemical cells Galvanic cells and electrolytic cells, EMF of a cell and its determination. Electrodes, Single electrode potential - origin, sign conventions. Derivation of Nernst equation. Standard electrode potential. Energetics of cell reactions. Classification of electrodes, construction, working and applications of calomel 06 hours electrode, Ag / AgCl electrode. Glass electrode (Derivation of expression for electrode potential). Measurement of single electrode potential. Determination of pH using glass electrode. Concentration cells. Chapter 2: Battery Technology Batteries- Introduction, battery characteristics. Fuel Cells Introduction, types of fuel cells, construction, working and uses of H2-O2 and Methanol-Oxygen fuel cells. Unit - II Chapter 3: Corrosion chemistry Corrosion - definition, Chemical corrosion and Electro-chemical theory of corrosion. Types of corrosion. Differential metal corrosion-galvanic series. Differential aeration corrosion, Water line corrosion, Pitting corrosion, Stress corrosion. Factors affecting the rate of corrosion. 05 hours Corrosion Control: Protective coatings, Inorganic coating (Anodizing and Phosphating). Metal coating (Galvanization and Tinning), Organic coatings, Corrosion Inhibitors, Cathodic and Anodic protection. Chapter 4: Metal finishing Technological importance of metal finishing. Significance of polarization, decomposition potential and over-voltage in electroplating processes. Electroplating Process, Effect of plating variables on the nature of 05 hours electrodeposit, surface preparation. Electroplating of Ni and Cr. Electroless plating - Distinction between electroplating and electroless plating, advantages of electroless plating. Electroless plating of copper and Nickel.

Unit - III Chapter 5: Chemical energy sources Introduction to energy; Chemical fuels-definition, classification, importance of hydrocarbons as fuels. Calorific value-definition, Gross and Net calorific values. Determination of calorific value of a solid / liquid fuel using Bomb calorimeter and gaseous fuel by Boys calorimeter. Petroleum cracking-fluidized catalytic 06 hours cracking. Reformation of petrol. Knocking Petrol and diesel knock, octane number, cetane number. Prevention of knocking, anti-knocking agents, unleaded petrol; Power alcohol. Chapter 6: Liquid crystals and their applications Introduction, classification-Thermotropic and Lyotropic with examples. Types of mesophases- nematic, chiral nematic (cholesteric), smectic and columnar. 04 hours Chemical composition and homologues series. Applications of liquid crystals in display systems.

Unit - IV Chapter 7: High Polymers Definition, Classification. Polymerization definition, types of polymerization Addition and Condensation with examples. Free radical mechanism of polymerization (ethylene as an example). Methods of polymerization-bulk, 05 hours solution, suspension and emulsion polymerization. Glass transition temperature. Structure and property relationship. Chapter 8: Synthetic polymers and their applications Synthesis, properties and applications of Teflon, PMMA, Polycarbonate and Phenolformaldehyde resin. Compounding of resins. Elastomers - Deficiencies of natural rubber, Vulcanization of rubber,. Advantages of synthetic rubber. Synthesis and application of Buna-S, Neoprene, Butyl rubber, Silicone rubbers. 05 hours Adhesives- Manufacture and applications of Epoxy resins. Conducting polymers - definition, mechanism of conduction in polyacetylene. Applications of conducting polyaniline.

Unit - V Chapter 9: Water Technology Impurities in water, Water analysis - Determination of different constituents in water Hardness. Determination of alkalinity by indicators method- problems. Dissolved Oxygen by Winklers method. Boiler feed water and boiler problems scales and sludges, priming and foaming. Boiler corrosion. External treatment of boiler feed water-Cold and Hot lime soda process. Ion-exchange method. Internal treatment of water-phosphate conditioning, colloidal conditioning, calgon conditioning. Desalination of water 10 hours - Flash evaporation, Electrodialysis and Reverse Osmosis. Sewage and its treatment-Biochemical Oxygen Demand and Chemical Oxygen Demand. Numerical problems on BOD and COD. Sewage treatment- Primary, secondary and tertiary.
