Inspired by other artist and designer run initiatives dotted around Sydney at the time, Gallery Red opened on Friday, 25 July 2008, as a side project of Red Ant Media a small graphic design and web development agency, interested in exploring new creative avenues outside of its day-to-day commercial practice. Initially envisaged as an affordable inner city gallery where young and emerging artists could exhibit, the last five years have seen the gallery develop into a unique commercial gallery with a diverse annual exhibition programme that showcases new artistic talent alongside established commercial artists. The gallery holds three signature exhibitions each year; Under Pressure a printmaking exhibition, Shutter Speed a photography exhibition and 31 Days an exhibition that celebrates the process of creativity and artistic production, as well as two annual exhibitions with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) and the Boonah Creative Arts Centre, for artists with disabilities. Gallery Red would like to acknowledge all of our family and friends that have contributed to this labour of love, our regular patrons for their support and engagement, the artists who have exhibited with us and all of our staff and volunteers, both past and present. The ongoing success of Gallery Red is due to the time, energy and dedication of you all. Thank you!

ALISON CUMMINS
Art makes Alison happy. She gets her inspiration from nature and landscapes and enjoys sharing her final works with family and friends. She uses paint, sponges, string, straws, brushes, candles, pencils and crayons.

ENRIQUE DEL VAL

Enrique was raised in Spain. He spent his teen years listening to punk-rock music. He started painting at 17 at Basque Country University. He arrived in Australia in 2002. Enrique encountered Buddhism in 2006. He currently lives between Robertson, NSW and Berlin, Germany. Enriques paintings are process-based, that is, the artist favours the dynamics of the process over the end result, allowing big spaces for improvisation and feeling. His approach to painting is playful, instinctive and liberating. He handles within his work notions of bonding, emotional intensity, revelling, void, sensuality of food and sex, alchemy, celebration and rocknroll.

JULIE BOOKLESS
Julie studied Calligraphy for 15 years after which she took up book binding, studying both Artist Book Construction & Bookbinding for 5 years with Wendy Shortland & Rosemarie Jeffers-Palmer. Julie is now a member of the Sydney Book Arts Group.

KIRSTEN SMITH
Born in New Zealand and now based in Sydney, Kirstens artistic career began in the 1980s with music videos and experimental short films. Kirsten studied cinematography in Sydney and then moved to New York in the early 90s where she worked at the Parsons School of Design and The New School. On returning to New Zealand she gained a BFA in Time Based Media then continued on to Sydney to study painting at Julian Ashton and at The Royal Art Society.

KEITH CHIDZEY
Keith is a sculptor and land artist, driven by imaginative juices flowing from our creator God. This takes the form of: prophecy through art; highlighting environmental responsibility; and promoting social justice issues. Keith particularly enjoys engaging in commissions to help others realize their dreams and visions.

MARGARET CAREY
Margaret went to East Sydney Tech since renamed to the National Art School, followed by City Art Institute and has a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts). She also has a Diploma of Education and currently works in the field of early childhood providing an art program based on the principles of Reggio Emilia. Her own art practice is a combination of collage, mixed media, drawing and painting.

MATTHEW SYRES
Matthew loves photography. Since his teenage years he has been obsessed with its ability to record a moment in time, capture the ever changing light, or still the advance of time in his subjects, whatever they may be. Matthew works as a commercial photographer in addition to his fine art practice.

PAMELA HORSNELL
Pamela comes from a background as an illustrator and graphic designer, working for design studios and the magazine and book publishing industry. She likes to explore different styles and techniques working in a variety of mediums, including watercolours, pencil, pen and ink, mixed media and printmaking. The subject matter of her work is diverse but in particular she finds the natural world and environment a constant source of inspiration.

ROBBIE GREEN
Robbie Green has been captivated by photography since childhood. He is particularly keen on photographing nature seascapes, sky scapes, landscapes, flora and fauna. He likes to evoke a response of intrigue, fascination or delight in those who view his photography. Robbie does not believe in the use of post-production digital manipulation in his work his aim is to capture the perfect image through the lens of his camera. Robbie received the inaugural Aspect / Creative Futures Individual Achievement Award.

Kerry Freeman
My paintings express my emotional landscape through colour, dreams & instinct. Id like to consider myself as some kind of intrepid explorer on a mission to reveal all the mysteries of my inner world. My motto might be if you can think it then thats certainly not it!

CATHOLICCARE: BOONAH Gallery Red have been working with the Boonah Creative arts Centre, an initiative of CatholicCare Broken Bay, for four years and are constantly impressed by the quality of work that is produced year in and year out. The works give great insight into the true quality of visual artist, showing its ability to transcend barriers. Boonah aims to provide and promote arts, education and creative expression for all people, especially people with a disability, enabling them to realise their artistic potential, develop skills, increase their self esteem and thereby enhance their quality of life. AUTISM SPECTRUM AUSTRALIA (ASPECT) 2013 marks the third year Gallery Red and Aspect have been coordinating exhibitions together to showcase the talent of artists working within their program. Aspect offers services which help build confidence and capacity with adults on the autism spectrum, their families and carers. The services offer opportunities for people to engage, build relationships and develop their skills and offer new ways for people on the spectrum to express themselves.

UNDER PRESSURE The first exhibition each year is Under Pressure, Gallery Reds annual celebration of printmaking, featuring a number of different printing techniques from a selection of artists invited to exhibit each year. SHUTTER SPEED Shutter Speed is Gallery Reds annual photography exhibition in association with the Head On Photo Festival. Uniquely themed each year, Shutter Speed explores the artistic merits of photography, inviting artists to push the technical and conceptual boundaries of the medium. 31 DAYS 31 Days celebrates the daily practice necessary to develop ideas when creating artworks. Artists are invited each year to make one art work per day over the month of July, responding to a given theme. The result is a vibrant, eclectic exhibition of works that showcases the unique creative process of individual artists working within different mediums.
