BAE Systems Challenger 2

The Challenger 2 MBT was introduced into British Army service in 1993 as a replacement for the Challenger 1, which was successfully employed in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. Delivery of 386 tanks to the British Army was completed in 2002, and 38 were built for Oman. The production line is now closed. The Challenger 2 retains the hull, albeit much improved, of its predecessor and features a new turret armed with the high-pressure 120mm L30 gun. The integrated FCS provides commander (360 traverse) and gunner (limited traverse) with independently gyro-stabilised optical/thermal sights, each equipped with a laser rangefinder. BAE Systems supplied upgrade kits for 137 tanks for the 2003 invasion of Iraq and further improvements were made to Challenger 2s employed during the subsequent stabilisation operation. The British Army fleet will be cut to 227 tanks, sufficient to equip three Type 56 armoured regiments. The tanks are expected to be modernised, when funding permits, to ensure their effectiveness beyond 2030. CIO B1 Centauro
Iveco Fiat-Oto Melara Societ Consortile (CIO) developed the B1 Centauro mobile gun system in the 1980s as a replacement for the Italian Armys M47 tanks. The Centauro was issued to the armys wheeled medium brigades in parallel with CIOs C1 Ariete MBT which equips the tracked heavy brigades. CIO produced 400 Centauros from 1991-1996 armed with a 105mm gun plus 84 for the Spanish Army in two batches between 2000 and 2006. As an alternative to the 7.5t 105mm armed turret, CIO integrated the 5.7t HITFACT turret armed with a 120mm smoothbore gun. Oman became the launch customer for the resulting Centauro 120 with an initial order in early 2008 for six plus an option for another three exercised in 2009. CIO has developed prototypes of a more compact 120mm-armed vehicle to meet the Italian Armys requirement for a Centauro 2 expected to enter service from the middle of the decade (funding permitting). The Centauro chassis was used as the basis for a family of AFVs. General Dynamics M1 Abrams

The M1 Abrams was introduced into US Army service in 1980 as a replacement for the M60. More than 8,800 were built for the army in various models (M1, M1A1, M1A2) while 403 M1A1s were supplied to the USMC. The M1 has been exported to Australia (59 ex-US Army M1A1 AIM), Egypt (over 1,000 M1A1s co-produced locally), Iraq (140 M1A1Ms), Kuwait (218 M1A2s) and Saudi Arabia (315 M1A2s). The M1 has benefitted from continuous product improvements funded by the US Army, resulting in numerous service models, the latest being the M1A2 System Enhancement Package (SEP), which features the Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below system and improved cooling. The Tank Urban Survival Kit (TUSK), a series of improvements to enhance the M1s ability to operate in built-up environments, has been developed as a result of experience since 2003. The US Army expects the M1 to remain in service with its armour brigade combat teams until about 2050, and plans to finish its Abrams M1A2 SEP buy in 2014 and begin upgrading the fleet in 2017, although there is strong Congressional support for sustaining M1 production. GD is proposing installing an MTU 883 diesel engine and Allison transmission, similar to the powerplant in the companys Ground Combat Vehicle proposal for the US Army, to replace the current Honeywell turbine.
