Germantown resident receives volunteer of year honor

When 38-year Germantown resident Joan Greethurst was unanimously voted as the recipient of a prestigious volunteering awardas the 2013 Gathering on the Green Ben Barkin Volunteer of the Yearit was tangible evidence of her lifelong philosophy. I have always worked and I have always believed in giving your best to your home, church and community, she said. One can only help themselves become the best they can be when we are helping others. The 68-year-old elementary school teacher (she retired in 2002, but continues to substitute teach) began donating her time and efforts to Gathering on the Green (GOG)described on its website as the only performance of its kind in the country that combines orchestra, ballet, opera and theater into one weekend festivalin 2003. This was when a friend asked her to be a greeter at Concordia University where GOG attendees would arrive for shuttle transportation to the event at Rotary Park in Mequon. The rest, as they say, is history. Once I was able to experience one show, I continued to work with the volunteers, she said.

By Tresa Erickson Bit by bit, you've been updating your kitchen, refacing the cabinets, repainting the walls and replacing the light fixtures. You've ordered new countertops, and while installing those, you'd also like to replace your sink. The cast iron sink currently in your kitchen has seen better days. Not only is it old, but it's stained and just doesn't work for all of the cooking you do. The time has come to go shopping, and get ready, the number of choices available will astound you. There are many types of kitchen sinks on the market today, and the materials they are made of vary just as much as the styles. Some of the more common styles include: Farmhouse sinks. These have an apron and can sit on top of the countertop or be mounted underneath. They are generally fairly deep. Prep sinks. These are fairly small and serve as a second sink. They work well for homeowners who entertain a lot or have more than one cook in the family.
Trough sinks. There are long and lean and allow for more than one faucet and drain, making them convenient for kitchens with multiple cooks. Seamless sinks. These are part of the actual countertops, providing for a seamless look. They also eliminate the crevice between sink and countertop, making cleanup a breeze. Undermount sinks. These are designed to fit under the countertop, making cleanup easier. Homeowners simply wipe whatever debris is on the countertop into the sink. Vessel sinks. These sit on top of the countertop, and because they are higher, require less bending over. Although once reserved for bathrooms, vessel sinks are now being designed specifically for kitchens. Prep baseball: Hamilton tops Memorial in extra innings

Hamilton needed to go into extra innings before finally scoring the run that lifted the Chargers to a 1-0 win over Catholic Memorial in a summer baseball regional semifinal July 9. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Taylor Paepke singled and advanced to second on a bunt single by Kelton Corcoran. Trent Metzger then made contact, sending the ball just over second base before it dropped into center field, allowing Paepke to score. Hamilton's defense and pitching kept Catholic Memorial scoreless, as Jake Fisher threw 102 pitches over 10 innings, recording two strikeouts while allowing one walk. "He was our guy today and thankfully it worked out," Coach Mike Schramek said of Fisher. With the win, Hamilton advanced to a July 12 game at Kettle Moraine. Menomonee Falls beat Brown Deer 9-3 July 10 in a game that was delayed a day due to weather. Menomonee Falls opened the game with six runs in the first inning while adding one run each in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Brendan Paule pitched five innings and record one strikeout while Ty Weber and Jimmy Kolz pitched two innings. Menomonee Falls advanced to a July 12 game at West Bend West. Germantown had a first round bye and was scheduled to host Slinger July 12.

Dear Dr. Winter, How can I protect my child's teeth? The best way to answer that question is to first discuss when should my child see a dentist? The best way to prevent oral health problems is to take your child to a dentist regularly. After your child's first dental visit-which should occur about six months after your child's first tooth erupts or by the child's second birthday-he or she should see the dentist every six months. Early visits will help familiarize your child with the dental office, reducing anxiety and making future visits less stressful. In addition to examining the development of your child's mouth, the dentist can teach you how to ensure good oral health and recommend special preventive care if necessary. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children, and unfortunately,children who develop cavities in their baby teeth are more likely to develop cavities in their permanent teeth, as well. Protect your child from tooth decay and other oral health issues by taking steps to care for your child's teeth throughout his or her childhood. The next question is how to protect your child from tooth decay. Prolonged exposure to sugar-containing liquids can cause tooth decay in children,so limit your child's consumption of sugary beverages like soda or fruit juices. If you give your child a sippy cup for long periods of time, fill it only with water. Children should learn to drink from a regular cup as early as possible so that liquid is less likely to collect around teeth that way. Also try to limit your child's consumption of sugary or starchy snacks,especially those that can remain stuck on the teeth after eating. As a parent, you should care for your child's oral hygiene until the child is old enough to take responsibility for their daily routine of brushing AND flossing.. Make sure your child brushes for two minutes at least twice a day using a pea sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste. Before age two you can clean your child's gums with a damp cloth and brush with water. Flossing should begin as soon as your child has two teeth that touch each other. Make sure your child gets fluoridated water whether it's bottled or from the tap. Lastly. The best advise we can give you is to lead by example. Brushing and flossing your teeth with your child will teach him or her to understand the importance of good habits and good oral hygiene. Dear Dr. Winter, how do I decide if it's better to have a root canal and crown lengthening or just pull it and place an implant? Great question! Your dentist will look at the remaining tooth structure, length of the root and condition of your adjacent teeth and give you the pro's and cons of each option.

Generally speaking if a tooth can be saved for a minimum of 5 years that treatment may be acceptable. So if there is a long root left and the gum tissue is healthy, a root canal procedure and judicious crown lengthening may be a great choice. If the prognosis is poor and it is difficult to get at least 4 mm of clean tooth to cement a crown to with at least 2 mm of additional root that the gum tissue can adhere to ( we call this biologic width) then the tooth should be removed, socket grafting should be performed and an implant placed. So here I am 10 years later still volunteering in a way in which I can play a small part, with so many others, to launch a fabulous weekend of shows for all ages. From 2006 to 2012, Greethurst switched volunteering capacities and took on the daunting task of helping set up the approximately 3,000 chairs assembled on the lawn for the event, and this year she will serve as an usher. She said that even though her jobs have been hard work at times, she cherishes every moment. With Gathering on the Green, it amazes me how the Mequon Rotary Park is transformed into a showcase of talents for a wonderful cultural event, and I get to be a part of that, she said. Whatever form her involvement has taken, Greethurst considers GOG an opportunity in a new community to make many new friends. This experience allows me to continue my endeavor of lifelong learning, she said. I learn so much from interacting with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Named for Ben Barkin, the originator the Great Circus Parade and a renowned area volunteer, the award has had 11 recipients before Greethurst. This is a great honor considering each years event includes approximately 400 volunteers, said GOG Executive Director Beth Bauer. Recipients of our award must have been a volunteer for at least five years for our event, show dedication to their area and show examples of volunteerism with other groups in their community, Bauer explained. Greethurstthe mother of two grown daughters, Julie, a deputy sheriff in Juneau County, and Jenny, who is about to earn a masters degree in library science and archivingis no stranger to lending a helping hand. She volunteers as an usher for shows at the Schauer Center in Hartford, for the STEP (Senior Tax Exchange Program) in Germantown and as a voting inspector when needed, to name a few areas of her service. I have always tried to be involved in my community, she stated simply. I like people. I am a people person. Having grown up with her brother, Ken, in a farm community in Minnesota, Greethurst credits the values imparted on her by her parents, Wayne, now deceased, and Elfrieda, who at 95 continues to thrive in a nursing home in Minnesota, with her inquisitive and enthusiastic approach to life. I try to make each day a new adventure to learn and enjoy, she said. Life is so precious so why not enjoy every moment? Greethurst looks forward to a future of more giving of herself and gaining invaluable rewards in return. The community is a door of many happenings and I am always looking for new experiences, she said. So many treasures are very close by. She added with a laugh, Especially in my senior years, I appreciate keeping a little spark in my life!
