Training Advice
SURCO Training was founded to provide commercial training resources, advice and help for employers of construction personnel working in the civil engineering industry. Since then it has expanded into the provision of geospatial training but on a different basis. Employers provide training primarily to serve and support their business needs. Such needs and competencies are defined by workplace and market demands, regulatory requirements and the professional institutions. Typically in larger employers, this training, at early career levels, is structured over a 3 to 5 year period comprising some 10 to 20 workshops delivered in house over that time. In many cases, employers have remarked that SURCO Training courses at this level cover the workplace skills that more formal education misses out. As careers move on and employees become more specialised, further structured training can be provided using Follow on or Advanced modules. Through its access to tutors who are experts in their own particular commercial field SURCO Training can also offer training at an expert level on topics such as legal and regulatory requirements and dispute resolution. For smaller employers such structured training is possible utilising SURCO Trainings open access or public courses which allow delegates to accumulate CPD certificates to evidence training and to assist them to gain the competency levels required. For simple guidance, a structured Early Career programme will be appropriate for those working towards a corporate professional qualification and the Follow on programme for those between membership and fellowship levels. Currently the core modules are deemed to be primarily at levels 4 and 5 of the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ). However EBTA (the Department of Education and Skills employer based training accreditation service) has also noted that structured training programmes using the SURCO Training modules have the potential to be assessed at higher levels (6 and in some cases, 7) of the FHEQ. Several of the industrys major employers now offer commercial internships, modern apprenticeships or other employment packages for non-graduates and school leavers. These are a rapidly increasing source of future industrial talent and such packages are frequently supported by commercial workshops provided by SURCO Training either as part of a structured package or on an introduction to the industry basis. Some workshops can also be adapted for delivery at career conventions or within work experience or placement schemes. SURCO Training Tutors With the exception of the lawyers, all SURCO Training tutors have worked for a significant part of their careers as part of the construction team, usually for contractors. They are closely associated with the demands of the workplace as well as the business as a whole and many of them are recognised experts in their fields.
Meeting the demand of todays surveying professionals, SURCO Training is now offering a range of geospatial engineering training courses run by third party approved training partners. These training partners are The Survey School, AIT Spatial, and LTU. The courses cover training on setting out and land surveying, mapping software and underground utility surveying. Full course information can be found in our separate GE training brochure or on our website at www.surco.uk.com/training-geoadvice.php.

The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) was founded in 1969 to represent the interests of and set the competence standards for geospatial engineers or commercial managers working in the civil engineering industry. The Commercial Management discipline includes measurement, project management, estimating, planning and construction law. Collectively, members are known as civil engineering surveyors. ICES supports the education and professional development of civil engineering surveyors whether they are monitoring and setting out the works or working in measurement or Commercial Management roles. For more information about membership please contact the Institutions membership department on 0161 972 3100 or go to the Institutions website, www.cices.org . ICES recognises that training in the workplace is a vital element in reaching the competence levels required by law to operate successfully within a construction team and to achieve corporate or chartered membership of an appropriate professional body. Whilst the Institution promotes, assists with and accredits cognate courses in both Universities and Colleges of Further Education, it focuses particularly on its library of Approved Development Schemes (ADS). These schemes are agreements between employers and the Institution that define the training, experience and overall development framework that will be made available by the employer to allow an individual to progress to corporate membership levels of ICES. SURCO Training is the training division of SURCO Limited, which is the information business of ICES. SURCO Training workshops provide an excellent opportunity to expand the knowledge and understanding of the essential workplace skills of a civil engineering surveyor and to support individuals in attaining the competence requirements necessary for full corporate membership of the Institution. The Institution recommends SURCO training modules and workshops to its membership and to the civil engineering industry as a whole.
