I worked as a part-time shift manager in a store which examined, bought, and sold
gently used articles of clothing which were considered fashionable and appealed to
teenagers and young adults. Typical activities included: greeting the customers;
examining an array of clothing to determine if it was age-appropriate in terms of
current fashion and did not exhibit excessive amounts of wear and tear; entering
items into the computer and giving the customer a method of payment for his or her
clothing; tagging, censoring, hanging, and sorting clothes to be displayed in the
store; helping customers to purchase items; and ensuring that the store maintained a
clean and friendly environment. As manager, duties included: ensuring that
employees were on task and helping customers; aiding customers in any difficulties
they encountered; providing the necessary skills and knowledge during crises; and
opening and closing the store.

I worked with a girl who has a cognitive impairment. One of the company’s objectives
is to provide children with cognitive and physical impairments community-based
activities that they may not otherwise receive and to aid with activities in a home
setting. Each child had certain goals that were to be met based upon areas in which
the parents and case manager believed the child could benefit. As part of a daily
routine, I picked my client up from her place of employment, and we spent each day
walking for at least one hour. Afterwards, we would choose a community activity to
participate in, usually varying between going to the library, riding on the bus, or
going to the humane society. The last part of the day was spent in the home, in which
I aided my client in meeting goals pertaining to life skills. These skills included:
washing the dishes, cleaning fruit and vegetables, turning over laundry, and folding
clothes.
