History of Institute of Islamic Studies Library The Institute of Islamic Studies Library was organized as an autonomous unit to support the teaching, research, publication and extension programs of the Institute. It is home to 4,939 volumes of books, journals, and special resources that deal about understanding Islam not only in the Philippines but also around the world. The collection consists of different categories: printed, manuscript, and audio-visual materials in Filipino, English, Persian and Arabic languages. The choice of library resources reflects the aims and objectives of the Institute's Graduate Program and the teaching and research interests in Adat and Muslim Personal Law on Family Relations, Islamic Political Thought, The Quran, Islamic Law and Jurisprudence, Islamic Economics, as well as instruction in Arabic Language. Several developments led to the establishment of the IIS. The late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 342, and pursuant to Proclamation No. 1081 dated September 21, 1971, created the IIS as a unit of the Philippine Center for Advanced Studies in the University of the Philippines in order to effect the needed mobilization of national institutions for the purpose of nation-building. Furthermore, an amendment to the law creating the Asian Center or the Republic Act No. 5334 stated that the Philippine Center for Advanced Studies (PCAS) shall be composed of the Institute of Islamic Studies, Institute of Philippine Studies, and Institute of Asian Studies, among others. In 9th of July 1979, moreover, Executive No. 543 Section 4, Provided, That the Institute of Islamic Studies shall be a separate unit of the University of the Philippines System, hence, the now IIS.
