What HOSA is to Me
HOSA is a competition that gives me the ability to compete against other students who share my interest in health careers. It is a chance for me to develop my skills and perform for a judge panel, against other students who are interested in the same field of medicine as I am. It builds leadership skills as well as study habits, and team working skills. It builds these skills not only in competition, but also through its fun, interactive activities. HOSA brings the entire BSMA chapter closer and is the best time for second and third years to interact with the first years. It also is the best time for the AM and PM students to interact and get to know each other. It is truly an amazing experience that I know will help me in my study of medicine.

Nail Biter? Not After This Article!: By Bethany Calvert

Nail biting is disgusting; heres why. In todays society, we associate nail biting with anxiety in stressful situations. Its an easy habit to pick up, but not easy to put down. However, if you knew what you were chewing, you would stop immediately. The nails are at the tip of the fingers, collecting germs, and are a breeding ground for urea. Not only is this unsanitary, this is also not safe. The sensitive epithelial lining of the stomach and the esophagus will tear. The damage may lead to infection within your digestive tract. Does that make you nervous? Tap your fingers, dont bite your nails!

Toddlers + Magnets = Trouble

By: Bethany Calvert

A 3-year old little girl was taken to the emergency room in Portland, Oregon for two weeks after ingesting 37 magnetic

'Buckyballs'. These magnetic balls are not meant for childrens use. When the doctors took an x-ray of her stomach, the magnets formed a perfect circle, looking like she had swallowed a bracelet. Although these magnets may

be fun, if eaten, they will earn you a free trip to the emergency room. In 2006, the government warned against magnetic toys, because, if ingested, the magnets will fuse together and will perforate the intestines.

Have a Nice Fall: By Bethany Calvert

A 76 year old British woman was sent to a Gastrointestinal specialist with chronic diarrhea and unexplained weight loss. The doctors then proceeded to run a scan over her stomach, but they were not expecting what they found. This woman had an odd, linear foreign body in the stomach." As the doctors did some questioning, they couldnt believe the ladys response. She had been standing at the top of her stairs and she uncapped her pen to pick at her tonsils.
