The physical properties of copper make it
easy to form into wires that are flexible but
strong. Copper is also resistant to corrosion
and conducts electricity efficiently. Copper is
more common than other conductive metals
including gold, silver and platinum. It has a
number of physical properties related to
carrying electricity that make it desirable in
comparison with other metals. Does this

Copper is a ductile metal that is flexible yet hard. This feature of copper allows
you to bend copper wire without breaking or weakening it. The ductility of copper
also makes it easy to work with, reducing the cost of items made of copper. This
metal is also resistant to corrosion, greatly increasing the longevity of electrical
systems made of copper wire. Copper wiring is also not subject to the galvanic
corrosion, which results from two different types of metal coming in contact
while they are electrified. The electrical current causes ions to flow from one
metal to the other, resulting in corrosion.

Copper wiring is an efficient conductor of electricity because it provides a low
resistance path for electricity to travel. This reduces the total amount of electricity
needed to power electrical devices and helps reduce heat buildup caused by
electrical resistance. This feature of copper makes it useful in a variety of other
applications including circuit boards, memory modules and other forms of heat-
sensitive electronics.

Many forms of metal are subject to expansion and contraction when they are
subjected to intermittent electrical loads. This problem often causes wiring to
loosen from its connections. This issue -- known as creep -- can cause increased
heat buildup and dangerous electrical arcs. Copper wiring is not subject to creep
since it does not expand and contract when it is electrified.

Copper is a nonferrous metal that does generate a magnetic field. This feature is
important since it allows copper wiring to work near magnetically sensitive
equipment and lowers the amount of electromagnetic interference generated by
household wiring. The ductility and nonmagnetic nature of copper wire makes it
very effective at creating electromagnets since it can transfer electricity in a loop
efficiently without being affected by the magnetic field it generates.

Copper is one of the components of several types of metal alloys that are
commonly used to make screws and other types of electrical connectors. Since
copper does not experience galvanic corrosion when it contacts another piece of
electrified copper, copper wiring is compatible with other metal alloys containing
copper such as brass and bronze.
