Class:

Textbook: Thomas Engel and Philip Reid, Thermodynamics, Statistical Thermodynamics, and Kinetics, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2006 (revised printing), ISBN: 0-8053-3844-6. Other Resources: a) Thomas Engel and Philip Reid, Student's Solutions Manual for Thermodynamics Statistical Thermodynamics, & Kinetics, Pearson Benjamin-Cummings, 2006, ISBN: 0-8053-38519. b) Corrections to the textbook. c) MIT OpenCourseWare, Chemistry 5.60 and 5.62, http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Chemistry/index.htm. Course Content: Thermodynamics (Chapters 1-9), statistical thermodynamics (Chapters 13-15), chemical kinetics (Chapters 18 & 19), and relevant mathematical review. Research Paper Assignment: Select two published papers-one about thermodynamics, including statistical thermodynamics, and other chemical kinetics. From either of these two papers, work out a three-question (or more) problem and its answers. These papers must be selected from ACS journals (e.g., J. Am. Chem. Soc., J. Phys Chem., Anal. Chem., Biochemistry, Inorg. Chem., J. Agric. Food. Chem., J. Med. Chem., J. Org. Chem. Macromolecules, Organometallics, etc.), J. Chem. Thermodynamics (Elsevier), or Int. J. Chem. Kinet. (Wiley InterScience). The thermodynamic assignment is due on March 31 and the kinetic assignment on April 25. Both must include the original papers and typed problems and answers. These assignments will be graded by me. Homework: Problems will be assigned for each chapter. Homework is due one week from the day of distribution and graded by the teaching assistant. Late homework will not be accepted. You are encouraged to work with others, but the work you turn in must be yours. No credits will be given to problem solutions copied from the solutions manual.

Tentative plans for letter grade assignments: A, 90 100; B, 80 - 89.9; C, 70 - 79.9; D, 60 - 69.9; E, below 60. Academic Dishonesty: You are hereby notified that the Department of Chemistry considers academic dishonesty (cheating) a very serious offense. We will follow the new policy for handling cases of academic dishonesty: (1) The minimum penalty for a first offense is zero on the assignment. (2) Any offense that results in a penalty will be reported to the Registrar by the Academic Ombud. (3) The minimum penalty for a second offense is E, and for a third offense, it is suspension. Attendance and Cell Phones: You are expected to attend each class on time and turn off your cell phone prior to the beginning of the class. Major Religion Holidays: Intended absence due to a religious holiday must be notified in writing by January 30. No-Class Dates: January 21: March 10-15:

Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Spring Break

Helpful Suggestions: Thermodynamics and kinetics are both challenging and valuable to all chemists. These are important for handling basic chemical problems involving equilibrium and reaction rates. To master these subjects and be successful in this course, you are advised to prepare for each class, attend each lecture, take good notes, review the text and lecture notes after each class and prior to homework, make the best effort to understand physical quantities, refresh your mathematical skills, and ask/discuss if you have questions.
