Strength of Materials Tutorials Stresses and strains

1) A Load of 50kN is suspended by a steel pipe of 50mm external diameter. If the ultimate tensile strength of steel is 500 N/mm and the factor of safety is 4, determine i) the thickness of the pipe ii) Elongation of the pipe over a length of 200mm if stressed to its maximum permissible value. Take E= 200 kN/mm (Pg No: 17 Exno: 2.7 chakraborti) 2) A tensile load of 40kN is acting on a rod of diameter 40mm and of length 4m.A bore of diameter 20mm is made centrally on the rod. To what length the rod should be bored so that the total extension will increase 30% under the same tensile load. Take E= 2 x 10 N/mm (Pg No:22 Exno:1.13 Bansal) 3) A steel flat plate tapers uniformly from 200mm to 100mm width in a length of 500mm and uniform thickness of 20mm.Determine the elongation of the tapering plate if it subjected to an axial pull of 40kN. Take E= 2 x 10 N/mm (Pg No: 28 Exno: 2.15 chakraborti) 4) Two vertical rods one of steel and the other of copper are each rigidly fixed at the top and 50cm apart. Diameters and lengths of each rod are 2cm and 4m respectively. A cross bar fixed to the lower ends carries a load of 5000N such that the cross bar remains horizontal even after loading. Find the stress in each rod and the position of the load on the bar. Take E for steel =2 x10 N/mm and E for copper = 1 x 10 N/mm (Pg No:33 Exno:1.21 Bansal) 5) A bar of uniform cross-section A and length L hangs vertically, subjected to its own weight. Prove that the strain energy stored within the bar is given by U=A x x L /6E where E=modulus of Elasticity, = weight per unit volume of the bar (Pg No:149 Exno:4.7 Bansal) 6) Two elastic bars of the same material and length, but one of the circular cross-section of diameter 30mm and the other of square cross-section of side 30mm absorb the same amount of strain energy, delivered due to gradually applied axial forces. Calculate the ratio of the induced stresses applied. Also calculate the ration of applied forces(Pg No: 105 Exno: 5.2 chakraborti) 7) A vertical tie rod rigidly fixed at the top consists of as steel rod of 3m length and 30mm diameter, encased throughout in a brass tube of 30mm internal diameter and 5mm wall thickness. The rod and the tube are fixed together at the both ends. The compound rod is suddenly loaded in tension by a weight 100 kg falling through 100mm before being arrested by the tie. Calculate the maximum stress in brass and steel if E for steel =2 x10 N/mm and E for brass = 1 x 10 N/mm
