fter rising sharply in the previous month, equity markets took a breather in October. The Sensex and Nifty fell about 1.5% each. Midcap stocks outperformed marginally with the CNX Midcap Index down 1.0%. FMCG stocks continued to do well while IT and metal stocks remained under pressure. Attention shifted to the ongoing second quarter results declarations, which so far have been in line with expectations. On the international front, market performance was mixed. US stocks fared poorly with the Dow and Nasdaq down 2.5% and 4.5% respectively. Investor sentiment there seemed weighed down by weak quarterly earnings and lackluster economic data. During the month, much of the attention in the US was fixed on the soon to be concluded presidential elections. European markets fared better with most major markets up marginally with the Dax, CAC and FTSE 100 up 1-2%. Asian market performance was mixed with the Taiex and Kospi down sharply by 7.1% and 4.2% respectively, while the Hang Seng was up almost 3% and most other major markets showed marginal movement. On the commodity front, there was a sharp cor-
rection across the board as investors seemed to be booking profits after a very sharp rally in the preceding month amid continuing concerns over the health of the global economy. Zinc, Aluminium, Lead and Copper prices fell 6-11%. Oil prices were also weak with Brent Crude down a little over 3%. In the near term, concerns remain over a slowing Indian economy though the recent government action has provided some hope. However, its immediate impact is largely on sentiment and a follow through pick up in investments is required. Hopefully, the government will persist in the same tenor and continue to introduce reforms. The Sensex now trades at a PE of 14x one-year forward earnings and is moderately below its long-term average valuation. Current interest rates seem close to peak levels. A potential reduction in rates leaves room for an expansion in multiples apart from an improvement in earnings growth prospects. Over the medium to long term, returns are likely to be driven largely by earnings growth with some prospects for an improvement in valuations. of USD 3646.41 million in October 2012 as compared to an inflow of USD 3681.88 million in September 2012. In the Second Quarter Review of Monetary Policy, RBI kept repo rate unchanged at 8% and reduced the cash reserve ratio (CRR) from 4.50% to 4.25% thereby releasing around ` 17,500 crores of liquidity into the system. RBI has lowered its FY13 GDP estimate from 6.5% to 5.8% and raised its inflation estimate from 7% to 7.5% by March 2013. RBI continues to maintain an anti inflationary stance as the underlying inflationary pressures reflected in non-food manufactured products inflation have remained stubbornly above their comfort levels. In its guidance RBI has suggested a reasonable likelihood of further policy easing in the fourth quarter of 2012-13. Source for various data points: Bloomberg & publicly available data.

daily life, and the positive emotions keep them coming back for more. Participants in laughter yoga report significant general health improvements. Many have felt a reduction in the frequency of respiratory infections like common colds and flu, and others have reported overcoming depression. Clinical research on laughter yoga methods, conducted in Austria, India and the US, has proved that laughter lowers the level of stress hormones in the blood. It fosters a positive and hopeful attitude. It is less likely for a person to succumb to stress if one is able to laugh away ones troubles. Laughter yoga has been introduced in many schools in Surat, Baroda and Bangalore, with amazing results. The school schedule includes 10 minutes of laughter in morning assembly, followed by five minutes of laughter in the classrooms both at the beginning and end of the day. This routine has energised the mood; teachers and students are happier together, with a more positive outlook, and this has improved discipline and attendance. Academic results have also shown improvements. Scientific research reveals that laughter can also help resolve many major issues at the workplace. Laughter yoga professionals have presented sessions to the business community, with positive results; and the concept is gaining in popularity in companies in India, Denmark, US and other countries. It is a powerful force for improving staff performance at the workplace. This was recently confirmed by studies in India and the US, which showed substantial stress reduction and enhanced staff productivity after just three weeks of laughter sessions. Laughter therapy has been reported to help relieve conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, and heart-related problems, asthma, respiratory complications, weak immune systems, and senile dementia. Truly, laughter is the best of all possible medicines. B S REPORTER This article is issued in general investor interest. Please refer Page No. 47 for disclaimer
