DESCRITPTION:

A biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which tissue or cells are removed from a part of the body and specially prepared for examination under a microscope. When the tissue involved is part of the small intestine, the procedure is called a smallintestine (or small-bowel) biopsy.

INSTRUMENTS/EQUPMENTS NEEDED:
Syringe CT Scan/ Ultrasound Anesthesia (Topical) Surgical tools (forceps,scissors,scalpel) Specimen bottle Vacuum

III. PROCEDURE (Skin Biopsy) 1. Explain the procedure to the client and schedule the procedure with the help of the clients physician. 2. Obtain Consent 3. Assess the client for history and baseline data 4. Let the client change clothes and wear gown. Provide privacy 5. Apply topical anesthesia in the back of the patients throat. 6. After application of a topical anesthetic to the back of the patient's throat, the capsule and the tube are introduced. 7. The patient is asked to swallow as the tube is advanced. 8. The patient is then placed on the right side. 9. The instrument tip is advanced another 20 in (51cm) or so. 10. The tube's position is checked by fluoroscopy or by instilling air through the tube and listening with a stethoscope for air to enter the stomach. 11. The tube is advanced 2-4 in (5.1-10 cm)at a time to pass the capsule through the stomach outlet (pylorus). When fluoroscopy confirms that the capsule has passed the pylorus, small samples of small intestine tissue are obtained by the instrument's cutting edge 12. After which the instrument and tube are withdrawn.

V. NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Before procedure Ensure a consent from the patient Check/Assess for baseline data and history for any complications or signs and symptoms for underlying diseases Check/Monitor Vital signs Let the client change clothes and wear a gown Make sure the client is oriented about the procedure to what he should expect Guide the client to the procedural room Make sure the client is comfortable to the appropriate position and provide privacy The patient is to withhold food and fluids for at least eight hours before the test. 2. During Procedure Support and reassure the client during procedure Assist client in positioning Tell the client to relax Make sure the anesthesia given is aleady active before going on 3.After Procedure The patient should not have anything to eat or drink until the topical anesthetic wears off (usually about one to two hours).

If intravenous sedatives were administered during the procedure, the patient should not drive for the remainder of the day. Complications from this procedure are uncommon, but can occur. The patient is to note any abdominal pain or bleeding and report either immediately to the doctor.
