LESSON PLAN Date : 21/05/2013 Class/Group : Year 9 Topic : Tectonic Plates Outcomes/Aspects/Levels WA Curriculum Framework PS 5.

1 Room : C1 Time : 11:33 12:37

Previous learning/knowledge Mapping Skills

Specific objectives Students will be able to; Define geomorphic activity Identify that the earths crust is split into continental plates Explain why continental plates move Explain how new mountains are formed as a result of tectonic activity Resources/materials needed 6 x copies of cards for Vocabulary silent card shuffle Students laptops + OneNote Definition List 32 x blank KWL charts Comments

Time 11:33

Teaching/learning activities Introduction Mark roll, and then watch you tube clip on tectonic plates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtqumXEHKUs

11:38

Teacher Input Hand out student assessment task sheet Geomorphic Hazard along with Question & Note Taking framework. Go through the task requirements as a class. Review question types and get students to generate literal, inferential, and evaluative questions for their inquiry. Remind students may want to add additional questions as they continue their research.

11:52

Teacher Input/Student Activity Set up a KWL chart on plate tectonics model on board; What does the K, W & L stand for get students to write to the meanings on the sheet. As a whole class go through K What do they already know about Tectonic Plates? W -). Generate low & high order questions as a class on Plate Tectonics, re: what they want to know? L Read Geoactive pg 88 aloud to the class (review information locating skills ask students to find the page in the book). After each paragraph/idea, stop and get students to see whether their questions from W have been answered. Get students to write down any answers to their questions, plus any other key pieces of information they have learnt. Do this as a whole class for the first 2 paragraphs, pairs for the next 2 paragraphs, and individually for the last paragraph. Then ask class if they have any additional questions to add to the L section after reading

12:15

Student Activity Ask students to transfer any questions, and relevant notes on their Assessment question & note taking frameworks. Student Activity Students to have copies of a scrambled tectonic plates world map. Students to cut out the tectonic plates and glue them together correctly on a separate piece of A4 paper. Students are then to shade in the different plates in different colours, and provide a key on their map.

12:20

12:30

Conclusion Concluding questions: What are tectonic plates? Why do they move? What happens when they move? Homework: Complete map get students to put it in their homework diaries.
