Paul Hueseman, Pharm D and owner

A special advertising section featuring locally-owned & operated businesses

With more and more small pharmacies being bought out by big chains, Greentree Pharmacy in Kirkwood is bucking the trend. Paul Hueseman, Pharm.D., opened the independently-owned business in November 2012 in the heart of downtown Kirkwood. Growing up in Kirkwood, I have a love for the community here and saw a huge deficit in Kirkwood that we did not have a community pharmacy that was independently owned, said Hueseman, whose father also is a pharmacist. He started his career in pediatric pharmacy at the St. Louis Childrens Hospital. Prior to starting Greentree Pharmacy, Hueseman was a partner in Bellevue Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy. Greentree offers prescription and overthe-counter medications, Medicare Part D prescriptions, diabetes products and supplies, supplements and orthotics. Greentree also provides special services, such as custom flavoring of medications for children and pets; medication therapy management (MTM); special packaging for medication adherence;

refill synchronization; a weight-loss program; and flu shots and immunizations. The pharmacy serves Kirkwood residents, physicians and those from area group homes and assisted-living communities. The 301 S. Kirkwood Road location has a long pharmaceutical history. Built in 1918, the building was first occupied by Roy Thompsons Pharmacy until 1943. Sidney Smith Pharmacy then took over and remained until 1983. Hueseman enjoys applying that hometown touch and gets satisfaction from talking to his patients about their medications and their condition to empower them with more information in order to be healthy, he said. Our patients are more than just a prescription to us they are our friends and neighbors, he said. He said they appreciate the time he takes to talk to them. Customers are invited to visit the pharmacys website at www.greentree-rx.com. Greentree Pharmacy is a member of the Health Mart network of independent pharmacies.

Ageless Rug Treasures has been selling hand-knotted rugs in Webster Groves since 1997. Owner Matthew Bay runs the business, along with his mother, Marynell, and his wife, Lulu. You will always be assisted by a family member, he said. Bay fell into the rug trade shortly after college when he happened to pass a rug gallery. I was immediately struck by lightning, Bay said. The glowing colors, spectacular designs, even the smell of wool captivated me. I asked for a job and received one doing the manual labor. After working at the store for several years, I took the plunge and opened my own gallery. Ageless Rug Treasures specializes in high-quality, hand-knotted rugs in a wide range of colors, patterns and styles from classic to casual to contemporary. It can take two or three weavers as long as six to eight months to create one 8- by 10-foot rug. Building inventory is very

expensive and requires years of time, Bay said. Over the years his business has not only grown, but it has also changed. Bay first stocked primarily traditional rugs. Now he offers just about any style one could dream of. At first just a few interior designers patronized the shop. Now a large part of the business is with designers. And customers can view the inventory on the Ageless Rug Treasures website. Bay enjoys the challenge of selecting gorgeous rugs that meet his quality standards. These rugs also must be something Im confident someone will fall in love with, he said. Customers tell Bay that no one else has the selection of rugs, in quantity as well as uniqueness and beauty, that he does. Customers also appreciate the opportunity to take a rug home for a one-night trial before making a decision.

Sugar Magnolia Boutique, Webster Groves specialty lingerie and bra shop, features custom-fit bras and offers loungewear, intimates, bridal, burlesque and maternity lingerie, as well as hosiery, jewelry, soaps and candles. I have always loved lingerie, but after 13 years of marriage and three children, I didnt even recognize my own body, said shop owner Lisa Davis. Left frustrated by the lack of options and the difficulty in locating a proper-fitting bra, Davis founded Sugar Magnolia in February 2012. The goal was a unique specialty shop that provides a personal experience, as well as an array of sizes. Were trying to fill the void between a boring bra shop and a swanky adult store, Davis said. While Davis has a true passion for lingerie, store manager Carrie Dalton brings a fresh creative flair to the store, making them a dynamic duo. We are changing the

way women feel about themselves, one bra at a time, Davis said. Recent research showed that about 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size. An ill-fitting bra can cause neck, back and shoulder pain. At Sugar Magnolia, you will be fitted by one of our specialists and given the knowledge to help you understand why a great fitting bra is so important for every woman no matter her size, Davis said, Customers say they love the array of bra sizes from cup sizes AA to N and band sizes from 28 to 50. The shop also carries lacy, silky, risqu and romantic styles, plus special made-in-the-shop garters which are given away with each lingerie purchase. Whether youre seeking the perfect gift, a custom special order, space for a party, or a basic everyday bra, you can expect a comfortable, highly personalized shopping experience at Sugar Magnolia, Davis said.

Tom and Judy Honigfort recently celebrated their second anniversary as owners of Great Harvest Bread Co. The couple opened the bakery in May 2011 and have been carrying on the commitment to baking handcrafted, fresh whole grain breads and sweets, as well as cookies, scones, muffins and bars. In addition to serving lunch Monday through Saturday, Great Harvest provides bread to The Magic House Picnic Basket Caf; delivers bakery-made mixes, hot cereals and granola to Schnucks in Des Peres; and operates a booth at the Kirkwood Farmers Market on Saturdays. Our boxed lunch and catering business is also catching on, said Judy Honigfort. Before we opened, a potential customer asked us about providing boxed lunches, it was an area we put on the back burner until we got our business up and running. Since then, we have developed and refined our catering menu to reflect what we do best; sandwiches showcasing our phenomenal, whole

grain breads, delicious sweets, and fruit and vegetable trays. The options are unbelievably fresh and wholesome. At Great Harvest, the staff mills the wheat daily on a hammer mill right in the bakery and bakes it into breads and sweets within 24 hours. Fresh wheat means fresh product, Honigfort said. We start baking here every morning at 4 a.m., handcraft each product, and sell it fresh from our shelves, often still warm. Our production area is out in the open so that customers can see that everything begins and ends here. Nothing is shipped in frozen, or pre-made, she added. Baking onsite goes over well with customers, who often comment on the smell of our bakery when they first walk in, Honigfort said. Customers are invited to our bread board, where they are offered a generous, free slice of whatever has come out of the oven that day.

Thompson Price Kitchens, Baths & Home: Your Hometown Remodeling Coach
Remodeling is a big decision for most homeowners. The folks at Thompson Price rely on a proven process of matching customers needs to design options, providing key checkpoints in the project, minimum disruption to customers lives and, most importantly, professional service. Owner Tom Price considers himself more of a design coach than product salesman. Too often, people make a mistake by trying to choose products like cabinets and countertops before they have even thought about how a kitchen or bath design will meet their familys needs, Price said. The TP process always starts with a collaborative discussion of how much the customers cook, family size, and what they like and dont like about their current kitchen or bath. We make the remodel process natural, collaborative and even fun! Price said. Thompson Price Kitchens, Baths & Home is one of the most experienced and trusted home remodeling teams in St. Louis. This means customers get outstanding selection, price and service from professionals who know the unique demands of successful remodeling and are dedicated to finding a design solution to fit the way they live. Located in Des Peres since 1978, Thompson Price is a familiar name in the St. Louis building and remodeling industries. Tom Price holds certifications as a kitchen and bath designer and remodeler. His experienced team of 15 all have continuous, updated training in design, products, construction requirements and municipal codes. T.J. Price and Ginger Fridley, who head the design and sales team, are experts in the vast array of remodeling materials available today. The Des Peres showroom displays a variety of these styles, along with samples of almost every stone, new composite and wood finish. People should not feel alone in this process, Price said. It is a big investment and it needs to be right the first time.

American Visions Contemporary Crafts, celebrating its second anniversary in its new Warson Woods location, continues to be warmly welcomed by its new Warson Woods and Glendale neighbors. Norma Van Gent started the retail gallery in 1997 to bring fine crafts to the St. Louis area. I loved the wonderful fine crafts I experienced at local art fairs and galleries throughout the United States, she said. I wanted an opportunity to present these fine crafts to my community. American Visions sells the work of American artists, including several local artists. Works include handmade products in clay, glass, fiber, wood and metal, as well as an extensive collection of jewelry. Over the years Van Gent has found that more and more customers are wanting to spend their dollars locally, support the arts community and have a retail experience where they are recognized and get

great service. American Visions is one of only a handful of local galleries selling American-made craft exclusively, Van Gent said. We are known for our artist-made jewelry, available in a wide range of styles and price points. We maintain wish lists for our customers, she noted. The shops sales associates Maureen Garcia, Christy OBrien, Teddy Gruener and Barbara Rand help customers find the perfect gift or purchase. Rand is also a jewelry artist who is constantly creating one-of-a-kind temptations. Customers appreciate the variety of handmade products we carry at affordable prices, Van Gent said. The greatest satisfaction Van Gent derives from her business is the one-on-one contact with customers I experience when telling an artists story or informing a customer about materials or craft techniques.

Adam and Jason Tilford spent two years looking for just the right Webster Groves location to open their full-service Mexican restaurant. We wanted to give back to the community where we grew up and continue to grow the restaurant scene in Old Webster. Milagro Modern Mexican opened in mid2010 in the new Shoppes at Olde Webster, offering chef-inspired Mexican food with a full-service bar. The brothers were inspired by their travels through Mexico in their early years, when they lived in San Diego where their father was stationed in the Coast Guard. They moved to St. Louis in 1990. Our goal with Milagro was to bring traditional, non-Americanized Mexican food to the area, said owner Adam Tilford. They love talking to their amazing patrons from Webster, Kirkwood and all over Metro St. Louis. They get special satisfaction from seeing old friends

who say theyve heard great things about Milagro. Indeed, the word about Milagro has gotten around. The restaurant has been named Best Mexican Restaurant for 2010 and 2011 by several publications, and Chef Jason Tilford was named Best Local Chef in the 2011 Riverfront Times Best of St. Louis awards. The Tilfords have continued to add to the restaurants ambience and have expanded the menu since opening. But the focus is still on traditional Mexican fare. Customers often tell the Tilfords that when they dine at Milagro, they dont feel like they are eating at a Mexican-themed restaurant but that they are eating at a nice restaurant in Mexico. Milagro Modern Mexican is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday, plus they offer a Sunday brunch.

Dr. Joseph Grimaud Continues CenturyLong Tradition At Watson Pointe Dental

Watson Pointe Dental is celebrating 102 years in practice, continuing the family traditions started three generations ago. Dr. Vincent Grimaud, opened the practice in 1911 and was joined by his son, Dr. James Grimaud, in 1938. The third and current owner, Dr. Joseph Grimaud, began practicing in 1985 and is pleased to have five family members (plus two honorary members) working in his office. Much has changed in dentistry over the past 100 years, and technology has made dentistry much more comfortable for patients, said Dr. Joseph Grimaud. Watson Pointe uses such technology as digital X-rays, intra-oral cameras, a fluorescent cavity detection system, single-visit allporcelain restorations and crowns, and most recently laser gum surgery. At my first visit to Watson Pointe Dental, it had been years since I had worked with a dentist, said patient Sean M. Dr. Joe and his staff were incredible. I can tell Dr. Joe puts in a good deal of time preparing for his clients comfort. Dr. Grimaud is taking his 21st-century skills to Nepal in October. With two locations, Reineke Decorating Centers Inc. strives to give its customers the best products and advice to get their projects finished right! Reineke sells color, specializing in decorating techniques and selling paint, wallcovering and related items. The two centers are located at 12017 Manchester Road, Des Peres and 8121 Manchester Road, Brentwood. Carl D. Reineke acquired a family tradition in the paint business when he bought out an existing paint store in 1976 where the Des Peres store is located. With the support of my parents, Russell and Rita Reineke, I went out on my own, he said. He said the staff, most of whom have been with him for years, are considered part of the family. Over the years products have changed and customers are much more knowledgeable about the products and applications. One thing that has remained the same is our ability to bring the most

innovative product selection to St. Louis customers, said Reineke. He noted that his company was the first to have a color computer for matching. He also offers new trends in wallpaper at the Des Peres location and the latest color trends at both stores. Stores carry Benjamin Moore paints for any problem a customer may have and stores also have environmentally-friendly paint. As another service, Reineke can provide customers with referrals for reliable contractors for painting, wallpaper hanging or faux finishing. Reineke finds it very satisfying helping customers determine the best color for their particular jobs. Customers like Reinekes one-stop shopping for painting/faux finishing and accessories. Painters tell us they make only one stop at Reinekes to get everything needed including that important cup of coffee, and help carrying the paint to the car, Reineke said.

Webster Groves Complete Auto Repair has been located in Webster Groves since 1996. Jerry Pfitzinger and his son, Scott, began their auto repair business in 1982 in Valley Park under the name of Jerry and Son. They decided to move to the Webster location after surviving frequent flooding in Valley Park. The shop performs repairs on both domestic- and foreign-made vehicles and is a Missouri state inspection station. We have seen many, many changes through the years in the automotive industry, said Scott Pfitzinger. Besides advancements in auto technology and electronics, vehicles themselves are made using much lighter materials, more lightweight plastic parts for the interior, and lighter metals for exterior. Remember the old days when purchasing a well-made heavy vehicle was an important factor? Todays vehicles are all about fuel efficiency and less emission of harmful substances into our atmosphere, he added. Unfortunately, because many parts are made with lighter-

weight plastics, parts wear down much quicker than in the early days when heavier materials were used. With summer in full force, Webster Groves Auto Repair has been busy taking care of airconditioning problems and overheated vehicles. We want to remind customers to keep an eye on their temperature gauge and coolant (anti-freeze) levels, Pfitzinger said. Please stop by anytime so we can check those fluid levels. It may save you from any inconvenience down the road. The shop strives for excellent customer service and is blessed with a loyal customer base. Many of our customers have been coming to our shop since we started here in Webster 17 years ago, Pfitzinger said. The staff is celebrating the recent marriage of their longtime office manager Jessica Vaccaro to their former mechanic, David Fitzgerald. The couple owns Fastow LLC, a tow truck service that operates out of the WGAR location.

For David Fitzgerald, the opening in September 2010 of FASTOW, LLC, a towing and road service company, was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. After working in the automotive industry for more than 20 years, I decided it was time to take the chance and pursue my lifetime goal and dream of owning my own tow truck company, said Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald owns the company with his new wife, Jessica Vaccaro-Fitzgerald, the office manager of Webster Groves Complete Auto Repair, where Fitzgerald used to work. FASTOWs services include vehicle towing, lock-outs, tire changes and general road assistance. The company, which is fully licensed by the Missouri Department of Transportation, uses modern equipment and techniques to ensure damage-free service. Due to modern advances in auto manufacturing, vehicles require extra care while loading and unloading to avoid mishaps and to ensure damage-free towing, Fitzgerald

said. Certain vehicles need to be towed differently than others, for instance, all-wheel and 4 by 4 vehicles must be towed on a flatbed tow truck to avoid damage to the drive train. Fastows flatbed truck can tow two vehicles at once. I derive the most satisfaction in my business from helping people who experience problems on the road and getting the customer and their vehicle to their destination in a timely manner, Fitzgerald said. Customers compliment Fitzgerald on his fast, efficient service, fair pricing and willingness to help however he can. Excellent customer service is one of my personal business priorities, he said. FASTOW is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day and takes all forms of payment. The Fitzgeralds are currently developing a website to help serve customers even better. The business is based on the premises of Webster Groves Complete Auto Repair.

Seniors Home Care: Proud To Be Celebrating Its 26th Year!

More than 26 years ago, Kit Whittington was the primary caregiver for her grandmother, who had been diagnosed with cancer. Whittington was the only family member available to assist with her care. Because she also worked full time, it grew increasingly difficult both physically and emotionally. So she hired an independent caregiver, but soon discovered that her grandmother was not receiving the level of care she deserved. At the end of the day, I checked on her and to my disbelief, I discovered the caregiver had simply not shown up, Whittington said. My grandmother had missed her doctors appointment and much-needed meals. It was a debilitating moment; we were both in tears. In 1987, Whittington started SHC to provide a family support system for older adults. SHC employs an around-the-clock nursing staff to assist clients and families in achieving their unique needs. Nurses and caregivers are screened, bonded and insured employees (not contractors). All employees undergo drug testing, a thorough background search and complete a training program that includes basic nursing skills, and physical therapy applications. SHC offers flexibility of care ranging from a 30-minute QuickVisit to 24/7 care. SHC has received an A+ rating, plus the Torch Award, from the Better Business Bureau. My own feelings of helplessness and a desire for a higher quality of life for my grandmother drove me to find a better way to care for her. The motivation behind SHC is my own personal experience and Ive built the company on a solid foundation of 26 years of consistent, compassionate caring for all clients. Kit Whittington, RN, BSN

Kuhn Construction Co. Inc. has been under the reigns of Rick Kuhn for 34 years now, and his personal passions have helped shape his company. As a teenager I did mission work through an organization called OFA with St. John Vianney High School, said Kuhn. Now as an adult and member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, I have been on more than a dozen mission trips, both youth and adult. Kuhn will be making his third trip in August to South Sudan to the Anglican Diocese of Lui, where he will participate in building a roof over a chapel and helping to teach the young men in the area how to build. But building for churches is not new to Kuhn. He is currently working with Grace Episcopal Church on renovating and expanding their columbarium. Kuhn Construction has worked for many churches in the St. Louis area and beyond. This is one aspect of the busi-

Building churches and serving communities are activities that fall right in line with the Kuhn Construction philosophy: Executing a successful project is based on the importance of building relationships with each client. Kuhn Construction is, of course, well versed in all aspects of residential remodeling and renovating homes of any type or age. The companys current residential jobs include a kitchen remodel in Webster Groves, interior renovations in Ladue, exterior renovations to an old log home, a room addition in Affton, and the list goes on. The company specializes in high-end interiors, custom woodworking and millwork, luxury kitchens, basements, decks and more. No matter the size of your remodeling need, whether a second-story addition or just a broken window pane, Kuhn Construction is ready to take care of you, Kuhn said.

Even Brad is an old-timer, having clocked in full time in 1982, after working there summers and on school breaks. The matriarch, Esther, retired in 1994, then died in 1997. Margie LaMore took over her duties as bookkeeper. The LaMore family is celebrating the shops 75th anniversary this month. The Milford family has been helping customers with kitchen and bath design since 1969. Tim Milford and his wife, Rita, the second generation, now run Milford Kitchen and Bath at its Fenton showroom. Milford Kitchen and Bath started as a showroom for homeowners, contractors and their customers to purchase quality kitchen and bath products. The company is still providing that service. They offer bathroom fixtures, kitchen and vanity cabinets and countertops in various materials including Onyx, quartz and granite. We have full-time kitchen and bath designers helping customers with space planning and product selection, said showroom manager Rita Milford. Rita Milford grew up in a family plumbing business and managed that retail shop for 10 years. Designer Anna Brusselback, who joined the Milford showroom staff in 2003, has excellent plumbing knowledge and could probably install any product we sell,

Milford said. New designer Rene Sondermann joined the staff last year and the family dog, Josh, greets customers at the door. Tim Milfords father, Tom, established Milford Plumbing Supply Co. in 1969 in North St. Louis near Sportmans Park. In the 1970s, the company moved to South County and added sons Tom Jr. and John. Tim and his sister Donna came on board in the 1980s. This family foundation allowed them to add two new locations over the years. Milford Supply now has branches in St. Charles and South County in addition to the showroom location. Rita Milford most enjoys helping customers create the bathroom or kitchen they will enjoy for years. Its gratifying to see a project go from an idea to reality. Customers often compliment the Milfords on their customer service and refer other customers to the store. Customers are pleased that we work with their budgets and offer several price options, Milford said.

Common Cents Rental Inc. has been in business for four years, specializing in rental, sales and repair of lawn equipment. The family company, which opened in 2009 in Fenton, carries major equipment brands, including Husqvarna, Toro, Redmax, Tanaka, Hustler, Grasshopper, Echo and Shindaiwa. We acquired the rental equipment from a gentleman who retired, said Jennifer Ficken, who owns the business with her husband, Bryan. It was a good fit because Bryan has been in lawn and garden his whole life. Customers can rent a wide range of lawn and power equipment, including air tools, aerators, skids, pallet forks, backhoes, concrete tools, flooring tools, chainsaws, welders, drain snakes and more. The company also delivers some equipment. We may have only been in business for four years, but we have many years in the field, Ficken said. Bryan originally worked on mowers out of our backyard and it grew from there. In those four years, we have grown leaps and bounds because

of wonderful customers who have recommended us and through advertising, she said. The Fickens already are training the next generation. Their three daughters take turns coming in to the shop to help during the summer months. Jennifer Ficken gets the most satisfaction in her job by treating customers fairly. Ive heard too many stories of overcharges or improper care at other rental shops, Ficken said. I enjoy talking to customers. The customers appreciate that Common Cents prices are fair and realistic and that the rental equipment is in very good shape. They also comment on how friendly we are, Ficken said. Although the weather is seasonably warm now, Ficken noted that fall is not far off. In the fall, it will be aeration time, Ficken said. We will have seed and fertilizer to sell and aerators to rent. Mike and Julie Douglas show off the Our Town new mover welcome packages filled with gift certificates from sponsor businesses.

The Sundown Landscape Crew

Thanks to Our Town Route 66, newcomers to the area are greeted with the modern equivalent of the welcome wagon: a packet in the mail filled with gift certificates from businesses in their new hometown. We help our sponsor businesses extend that old-fashioned feeling of hospitality to the new movers, said Julie Douglas, who owns Our Town Route 66 with her husband Mike. The company designs and prints gift certificates, mails them in an attractive cryingto-be-opened package, tracks the certificates when they are redeemed and sends a thank you card on behalf of the business to the new customer. The company provides a trackable return-on-investment to sponsors. Mike is a lifelong St. Louisan, and Julie has lived in the area for more than 30 years. The couple bought the 41-year-old direct mail marketing franchise earlier this year. Our Towns mission is to help new movers adjust and feel welcomed into their community, while assisting

sponsor businesses to gain new, loyal customers from this highly searching audience. We wanted to own a business that would allow us to make a positive contribution to our community, help other businesses and put our skills and experience to good use, said Julie Douglas. We opened Our Town Route 66 to serve businesses and new movers in the St. Louis/St. Charles area. Our Town Route 66 offers sponsors an opportunity to reach customers who are new to the neighborhood and are looking for businesses and services to replace the ones they left behind, such as grocery stores, hair stylists, doctors, vets and auto repair. Our sponsor businesses like that we make welcoming new movers so easy for them, Douglas said. The Douglases enjoy helping small businesses succeed by reaching new customers. We truly believe that strong small businesses are the backbone of a strong community, Douglas said.

Dave Haring began taking an interest in plants when he was 15 years old. At 19, he started Sundown Landscape Contracting while studying horticulture in college. Now, 34 years later, he still runs the business, together with his wife, Jill, and their son Jeff, who joined the staff in 2008. Other staff members include foreman Mike Lay, who has been with Sundown since 1999; designer Barb Riney, who joined in 1983; and another long-time employee, office manager Cindy Ebl who started working at Sundown in 1979. When Sundown started 34 years ago, we would do about any type of work, Dave Haring said. We now specialize in design and installation of gardens, patios, outdoor spaces and retaining walls and in solving drainage problems. The companys services include consultation to help individuals identify landscape spaces and problem areas and pick out proper plant materials. Our skilled installation crew takes pride in applying

the kind of attention to detail and finishing touches that leave each customer with a professional, finished landscape that reflects his or her personality, lifestyle and taste, Haring said. Haring enjoys meeting new clients and developing a relationship with them for the long term, he said. Client Cindy Roeser of Kirkwood is pleased with Sundowns work on her yard. Getting tons of compliments on the yard, she told Haring in an email. Thank you so much! I am no longer embarrassed. Now the house looks as cute on the outside as it does inside. The Harings also stay involved in the community in which they live and work. Dave Haring was voted Citizen of the Year by the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce in 2010. The Harings four children, ranging in age from 16 to 27, have all been educated through the Kirkwood School District. At different times, both Dave and Jill have received the Volunteer of the Year award.
